Which it was already after episode 2. Now, i love the show, but concluding best of all time before it's all said and done, is kind of dumb. This show is indeed really well made, and quite realistic, has superb acting, and i thought episode 2 was a 10. But, it's quite normal for a "underdog" show to receive a lot of love, and especially when it releases in the midst of the dumpster fire which was season 8 of GoT. Some people are voting Chernobyl high as a middle finger to GoT. It's the small low budget show up against the mammoth. Chernobyl needs to really show off some serious skills in the last episode to be consider better than Band of Brothers, which is without a doubt the best tv mini series ever made. If we bring in seasonal shows as well. Is Chernobyl really better than The Sopranos, Deadwood, Breaking Bad and The Wire? No. But it is indeed a great show so far.

@Wilantonjakov5 жыл бұрын
@@DrRhyhm You're right, nothing major. I actually think that Toptunov looked like a walking corpse, and even more so, Ignatenko (firefighter.) They didn't show Akimov, but apparently he was the worst, with half his face melted away. However, there were a few things, most notably the way the Soviets acted was not very believable whatsoever. First of all, in the first episode, that radiation burn from the firefighter picking up graphite- wouldn't happen that quickly. It would start to eat away at his skin 12 hours - 2 days later. Just a little nitpick. Also a nitpick is that there was no thick black smoke above the plant after the explosion. The big one (which was intended) was the fabrication of Emily Watson's character, Khomyuk (I think that's how it's spelled?) Historically, she didn't exist. She was made to represent the many scientists that helped Legasov. The one I have the most problem is the portrayal of the Soviets themselves. In Episode 2, the Central Committee member Boris Shcherbina threatens to have Legasov shot if he doesn’t tell him how a nuclear reactor works. There are a lot of people throughout the series who appear to act out of fear of being shot. This is inaccurate: summary executions, or even delayed executions on orders of a single apparatchik, were not a feature of Soviet life after the nineteen-thirties. By and large, Soviet people did what they were told without being threatened with guns or any punishment. In the episode where the miners are recruited, it is made out like the Miners actually had more power, socially, than the 'minister for coal'. The soviets were cruel and calculated but they never acted like fools. The 'minister for coal' was literally a pushover. In reality, every Soviet minister would have their way or there would be consequences. More often however, we are supposed to believe that the three men who were put on trial-and especially one of them, a particularly unattractive villain by the name of Anatoly Dyatlov-are to blame. We see him strong-arming younger, better men into actions that will ultimately lead to catastrophe. All because, it seems, he wants a promotion. But in reality it wasn’t the carrot of a single promotion, or even several promotions, and it wasn’t one nasty and abusive boss. It was the system, made up primarily of pliant men and women, that cut its own corners, ignored its own precautions, and ultimately blew up its own nuclear reactor for no good reason except that this was how things were done. The viewer is invited to fantasize that, if not for Dyatlov, the better men would have done the right thing and the fatal flaw in the reactor, and the system itself, might have remained latent. This is a lie. I loved the show, but there were definitely historical inaccuracies and these are some of them. Again, nothing major, but notable nonetheless.

00:20 it was a heroic sacrifice of thousands Soviet citizens, not Ukrainians, but tens of different ethnicities/nations of the former USSR that were liquidating the nuclear f¥ck up. Most of them were Russian, Ukrainian and Belarus, but many other ethnicities too (even one Afro-Soviet citizen). Great actors, great show 👍

At least somebody (from all this "enlightened" commentators' posse) got it right here - kudos! And Hell with all this "Art Nuevo" pro-Ukrainain [Uestern] bias!

These 2 together on screen is truly magnificent. The story is horrific - watching these 2 outstanding actors make it real & present & soul crushing (which this story must be) is a gift & something everyone should experience. Thank you gentlemen for your masterful work.

And then he looks outside the window and sees the Soviet children running around in the street, just a few kilometers away from the open nuclear reactor. One of the many moments of absolutely *perfect* visual storytelling in the show.

I'm only 3 episodes in and I can honestly say it's one of the most phenomenal mini-series based on real life events that I've ever seen. Not only do Jared and Stellan both give exceptional performances, but it is so well directed, the score, the tone, they really did their homework and drive home a level of connection and fear that is seldom seen in a show like this.

The point they make about how well written the script was to make something so complex, understandable to "even actors", is one of the biggest feats of this show to me. Amazing show all round.

This show is amazing, as well as the podcast with the show runners, going more in depth about the research they did for each episode. Emily Watson is really great, especially last episode interviewing all the victims in the hospital. I remember she was great also in ‘Appropriate Adult’

actually, not only the ukrainians did take part in that operation. there were people from each and every city of each and every country within the soviet union. my uncle's dad participated in this, and he died in the early 2000s, and surely his health was damaged. those were brave and life-loving men and women, who absolutely realised they were being sent to an extremely dangerous place to do a more extremely dangerous activity. even though there were way too much lies around the situation. and what is more important, they were not bound by national differences or stereotypes of skin color or eye shape. they all did their job, and did it good. they knew it were them who really had and could do it. and that they had no time to procrastinate and waste time -- their families' time, their friends' time, the whole worlds' time. and i personally haven't ever heard from any of them a single word of regret. no one did ever say they did wrong. not because of propaganda. P.S. In extreme condititons it is very simple to learn if you are doing the right thing or not -- you face the results of your actions istantly. I hope this never happens again May we all live in peace one day. And be alive and sane to witness this day. (from a Russian guy)

Watched this with my Russian ex who was a teen at the time of the incident. There were facts that is common knowledge in the West today, like the Swedes first detecting the radiation outside of Russia or Germany banning children from playing outside for months until the radioactive clouds dispersed, that was never told to those inside the Soviet Union. It was barely mentioned on Soviet news other than one or two reports weeks after that it was a "minor incident". This series blew her mind.

I binge-watched all four (4) episodes yesterday (Thursday, May 30, 2019) because of all the hype about the series that I had recently read about, here on KZbin and online, in general. Suffice it to say, Stellan, Jared and Emily, the three Principal Actors, are just magnificent. I loved Episode 1's "look": that greyish-green camera/lens filter that made everything that you were seeing on film reminiscent of that time period in the Ukraine, in the mid-to-late 1980s, lest we not forget the Set Design and the Musical Score, which is most riveting. Now, I am greatly anticipating the final Episode 5 entitled "Vechnaya pamyat" (Everlasting Memory), to be aired on June 3, 2019. If Jared and Stellan, especially, do not receive Emmys and/or BAFTAs for their work in this multi-part series, then Donald Trump's middle name surely is "J(ackass)" lol Chernobyl is brilliant, mesmerizing, so please see it at your earliest convenience. Remember, I was able to binge-watch the first four episodes in just under 12 hours, so it is very manageable. Thank you graciously again, HBO, for your continued excellence in movie-making!
