a brave hedgehog You think you had it bad? I was having the best game I ever had with the best fleet, strongest economy and technology years ahead of anyone else. I was in the centre of the galaxy and my empire was organised in three parts each part only had one way in and one way out. Easy to defend and fortify that made all the wars were child’s play and all my neighbours were weak. But I had two l-gates in the left and right parts of the empire with my home world in the middle, witch only had two ways in. I opened the l-gates and it surprised me at first. I handled it ok but I throw my entire fleet in to put a stop to them but got wiped out 6 times over. but little by little total victory was in my hands. Then the war of heaven thing happened and I tried to stay out of it but my fleet was wiped out so I joined one side. Very soon after the unbidden aliens came with my new allie as there first target and they were totally wiped out fast. After that not only did they attack from my right they entered a worm hole and attacked my left too. Best game I ever had and it was more miserable then ever.

Already did, either spawn next to an overagressive empire that purge/nom/assimilate me before year 100, or my neighborhood is relatively passive and since the game AI walk over cliffs like lemmings all that can be challenging are AE/crisis(multi crisis for life) that are difficult to physically impossible to overcome depending on how much of the galaxy is under control, making the game a race against the clock Really, i'm not even good at the game, multiplayer would whoop my ass, i just can't play decently without the pause button, the problem is that AI are just walls that need a fleetpower "ladder" to climb over, and player snowball is flat out unstoppable because of the AI predictability Oh and did i said that AI are dumb? Like "just keeping my fleet over this troopless world for eternity because the system before it got a station shooting down troop transports, there couldn't possibly be a better use for it like chasing the enemy's weaker fleet actually taking down every of my systems"

1. Capture as many L-Gates as possible in your initial expansion. 2. Build Citadels at each L-Gate in your territory and upgrade them to 25K or more. 3. Station a 25K+ fleet at each of these gates except for the one you are going to activate. 4. Position a huge armada of over 100K(if you already obtained that) at one of the gates. 5. Once gate activation takes place crush the incoming fleets at the gates. 6. Repair ships and defenses asap as another Tempest wave will strike pretty soon after the first wave. 7. Re-buff the 2nd wave then proceed to send the huge armada through the L-Gate and wreak havoc. 8. Now that the Tempest can longer get through to your L-Gates thanks to your huge armada blocking their access, help clean up the rest of the L-Gates that you do not occupy and at the same time positioning your smaller fleets to team up and intercept the marauding Tempest fleets. Once you take out these fleets they ain't coming back if their access is blocked in their own system. 8. Annihilate and conquer those ancient buggers in their home system. 9. Open a bottle of beer, wine, whisky or whatever your tipple may be for you have deserved it and rightly so.

If you are not ready with sufficient fleet power it can be very destructive to your empire they may not come through the one you activate but they come through every other one and destroy all in their path. My experience has been open it when you have a massive fleet if you can secure the main L system with the gate you can then Blitzkrieg them and destroy them rather fast, giving you time to survey the main star system where the gate is so you can claim it with a outpost and effectively cut off all none friendly empires from claiming the L-Cluster on you as of right now if you own the L cluster you can pretty much get behind potential enemies lines making wars against them far more tipped in your favor as you can use any L-Gate or claim all the systems with them in it and effectively have staging areas all over the galaxy. Not to mention you claim the cluster you monopolize the strategic resources within it.

Had a multiplayer round where 4 out of 5 people (all newbis to the game) tried playing funky species (me included) for the fun of it. But the last one played a full Meta high Technocrat Spezies (for wich he used a online guide on how to play) and rushed to open the L-Cluster as fast as possible (we all knew that there is a high chance of death by opening these). Long Story short, we had to fight the gray tempest in the early game (half way to the mid game crisis) and most of us got wrecked. After the player, who opened the gates, managed to take the L-cluster through his absurd high tech and thrived of that, the rest of us were basicly thrown back to the start (homeworlds and many colonies were turned into useless Nanite worlds). The midgame crisis (the Khan) was a joke compared to that and was ended pretty fast, by our hit and run fleets and tactics, wich we were forced to improvise in order to survive the gray tempest. In a normal or Meta game of stellaris you can open the L-Gates whenever you want. But for Meme- or Newbi-Rounds, where the goal is to do absurd and funky stuff/learning someone how to play, the rule of opening it after the mid game crisis is probably the best to keep the fun factor high.

Why you should open the L-gate, for cool stories like this. Gather round Children I will tell you a tale of the Empire in the L-Cluster. Ophelia the Home world of our species. It was inevitable that we would ascend to the stars. With the first few months of exploration an ancient ring world was discovered an AI overseer left to watch over the facility. With Sanctuary only being one jump away, our researcher's where eager to figure out what caused the star to be so dim near the center. We never imaged a structure this big could be in our backyard, years later we returned as conquers. The battles over Sanctuary took the lives of many Ophelians. There where 7 battles for the rings. The casualties where high but thoughts of Ophelia's first colony being on a Mega-structure around a star was to temping to pass up. Any sentient beings were integrated into empire with full rights of natives of Ophelia. If only that was enough to calm shock they felt when our armies landed on rings claiming it for ourselves. Year's Later ancient gateway was discover near a black-hole know as Xulbul's Maw. Without a clear way of opening the gate we began to passively study the gate. Years later a discovery made in Padjitauron which was the final piece need to open the gate. Inside were a Isolate empire who eager to receive us. But Warm feelings would not last long as our Interest in Nanites lead us to pressure our new met friends into enimies. The War was last for decades. The battle of Terminal Egress would mark a Turing point in the war. With a successful capture of the Terminal. Ophelia's Fleets where free to come and go as they pleased. They eventually push into the heart of our foes beyond the gate destroying their control center which left the Luster in a barren state. The war was over Ophelia got a new patch of secluded stars and new home if things in the galaxy decided to take a turn for the worse. During the next 100 hundred years of relative peace Ophelia was head towards strife once again the new Empress began a movement toward Communism leaving many in the Empire angry fearing this would lead to the loss of the tradition they held even before leave towards the stars. A branch of the Dusk Royal family tasked with oversight of the L-Cluster's development declared the Cluster to be New Ophelia many flocked to new empire formed by the branch family. It's glory would even surpass the worlds they left behind. The development of the Cluster was massive project Habitats where built over terraformed gaia planets, 2 Massive ring worlds where built and massive think tank where all science could be preformed. The System of New Ophelia would be it's home, the Science nexus was built over the terraformed moon Missiletainn which orbited a gas giant. New Ophelia became a utopia for many species who moved there or fled from war. It was the New World of the galaxy. The galaxy was about turn towards a massive conflict they would see over Billion dead. An ancient empire awakened exerting it power over neighboring empires. Soon after an ancient Rivalry kicked of which saw the awakening of another empire the biggest war in galactic history was about to begin. Many neighboring empire sided with their respective Awakened empire Ophelia choose to stay out of the war they cared not for their ancient home even if the had a fraction of the power as the new Empire did they would be fine. Soon after neutrality was declared several representatives approached New Ophelia being the most powerful Empire out of younger races asking them to start an non-aligned alliance realizing the whole galaxy could subjugated Ophelia formed the Non-aligned Axis. The fallen Empire soon caught world of this asking us to disband, Emperor Kesh II replied with the classic response "Nuts!" The awakened Empire wanting to cut the head off the snake launched an attack on Terminal Egress no other empire has done this to date. But they where unprepared for Mordred Class Flagship and Clarent Class Titans that stood in there way. Most refer to this as the Battle of Terminal Egress despite it being the second. But commanders at the battle referred to this as the Egress turkey shoot. After the battle the First Expeditionary Fleet mustered with with all powers in the non-aligned axis making the largest fleet ever assembled striking down one of the awakened empires in a quick blitz campaign. Soon following First Expeditionary Fleet unescorted by allied powers proceeded towards the heart of the other awakened empire. In a stroke of good fortune the fleet came across an unescorted colossus this super weapon was destroyed as well as it's QRF fleet which arrived to late to save it. First Expeditionary Fleet continued it's blitz through the awakened empires territory leaving only destruction in its wake. Soon the Fleet was bombarding the capital and with it's capture the war was brought to and end new age for New Ophelia as the sole Super power of the galaxy even though soon after they went back to their old ways of building massive structures empires of the galaxy could admire. One of the best campaigns I've played and makes a great story. That war in the Heavens was sick I was listening to "Twilight of the Gods" which seemed fitting for it and it just made to mood watching the fleet combat. Hope your guys campaign can be as cool as this one for me.

The empty L-cluster/Gray scenario is by far the worst one. You can reliably knock out the dessanu or Gray Tenpest with 200K fleet power, and the rewards are game-changing. All of the nanite worlds are able to be terraformed if it’s one of these outcomes, and there’s like 13-15 of them in the L-Cluster. They’re all cheap and fast to terraform, too. The result is a single sector with 13-15 planets that are totally isolated from the rest of the galaxy. Fortify Terminal Egress strongly, and you can build a sector with all of the megastructures (besides Matter Decompressor), 13+ planets, as many eccuminopoli as you could ever hope to use, and as many habitats as you want. And all easily defended with just a single system serving as a chokepoint. I’d rather have that than 10 Gray’s.

I personally always open the L-Gates, but I hate the Gray Tempest.

PRESS THE BUTTON, OPEN THE GATES.

Isn't it more of a question of whether or not it is worth it to open it? I'm already starved for engineering research and the amount you need to open it is rather massive. Without DLCs at least, because only 5000 energy for an insight? Heck yeah!

In my current game, I have all 7 of the L gate research's done and got a pop up about it. But nothing has happened since that and I am wondering if I have missed something

How can you miss the present? What are you doing, living in the past? I'm kidding, just because I like something doesn't mean someone else will.

Playing through Stellaris for the first time. Got the Grey Tempest event... But... It said that i was able to prevent the tempest from coming through the gate i activated (and i would be able to use the gate freely), the only other gate is in an opposing empire... I'm kind of thinking i should just let them roll through the other empire for awhile. I have plenty of firepower to take them down if/when they come for me. Any reason i should deal with them ASAP? Or just leave them alone to mess with my enemy while i poop through and conquer the L-cluster areas?
