I was going to say this match would have been even more terrifying for Mangs if Excelblem went Max, but then I realized half the reason he shut Mangs down so easily was because he couldn't get a good read on what units Excelblem was popping out every turn, and how Sasha made getting the tanks slightly easier.

I think this was the biggest "mistake" of the match. I really do hope Mangs doesn't just boil it down to "he built tanks and I didn't". Watching in hindsight, Mangs looks to be playing a completely different meta and got steamrolled because he wasn't respecting his opponent. Bad reads, not thinking about what his opponent's gameplan was, and not thinking about the signaling his opponent was giving off really added up to an L here.

Yeah, after all, knowing is half the battle. Mangs may know what he's working on, but he doesn't know what he's working with, which, in this case, was enough tanks to make even the Soviet Union blush. Mangs didn't or wasn't able to read his opponent, and when against someone sufficiently skilled, that's gonna cost you the game. A prime example was when Mangs built the Rocket. There's nothing wrong with the Rocket itself, it's a nice unit, it was his through process that was the problem. He killed a tank and injured another and thought, "I'm in a good position" while failing to consider what his opponent is doing, and what he's got hidden in the fog, and that's fatal in a strategy game. I don't fault him for that though. That's a byproduct of playing singleplayer, and is something you have to learn through experience and repetition. The skills your learn from playing singleplayer isn't usually transferable to multiplayer, and vice versa. You can very much forget that you're playing against another human, and just default to your singleplayer strategy against AIs. And it's difficult to get reads if you don't know the limitations of who you're fighting against, and the game, ya know.

I think it's not just that you built an anti-air too early while he had a bunch of tanks, but even if he DID build build a battle copter, his airport is in the north, and you built it, and sent it to the south. When he built his Anti-air suspecting you have a battle copter, he sent it towards the south after building it in the central base, in the general direction of your airport, IE, where your battle copter is going to come from.

Even with a medium tank instead of the rocket, the result would have largely been the same. By the time it made it to the battlefield, Mangs had completely lost his wall and vision. The medium tank wouldn't be able to do much of anything before getting chipped away by the nearby bcopter.

TL;DR Capturing forward properties early gives you income lead, capturing nearby properties first gives you unit count lead The thing with rushing contested properties or maybe forgoing properties to capture the ones on the frontlines can be explained with what you get in return. Doing so will gain you income lead on later turns, but since you ignore several properties you can quickly or at least not slowly grab, you dont gain as much money in the start as when you just cap anything near you. This in turn makes more early money, making the one that caps anything near has more money early on and building more units early on, and these units albeit not reaching the fronts sooner, will have more presence since they have the economy to build up power early. Compared to early pushers which have infantries, recons, and maybe some tanks on the contested area already, they will most likely not have backup to reinforce their forward position and be weaker against the upcoming enemy force, so they have to fallback but not too much, hold the position but not too long, press their advantage against the enemy cappers but not overextending, and definitely have to account the foe's money to predict when the enemy tanks are gonna reach them. Definitely requires more brainpower than just grabbing the initial easy economy, but since this tactic is active rather than reactive or passive, it opens to more options.

This match wasn't win by a mistake, but for a well playing person. Your bigest mistake was the rocket, but it didn't matter too much. Even if you did evething right, this guy very likely would win (yes, you could win, but he's very good at what he does).

While the rocket was the most obvious mistake, the biggest and fatal mistake was forcing the battle line into Excel's side of the map. This was the primary reason Excel had so many more tanks, besides the useless anti-air!

What makes Adder so fun, like why I always use him, is how good he is at harassing opponents. You can take advantage of his constantly fluctuating movement and attack ranges to keep them constantly second-guessing their own moves. You can take advantage of both when they overshoot a move, like where they thought they were out of range and then you use your power, and when they undershoot moves so you can't use your power to close the gap and land attacks. He's definitely not the "best" CO and I probably lose more matches than I win, but I definitely have a lot more fun playing Adder than any other CO. Also his theme is balling as fuck lol

10:48 I think Excelblem probably figured since your infantry came from the mountain it'd be more likely to expect your strong side to be on the top half the screen rather than the bottom half. Were that the case, chances were you could've had another unit either stood on the other mountain or on the city to the right of it and if they had positioned their infantry on the plains to they would've taken a hit from that unit. Alternatively had they misread the situation, they could've retreated their infantry to the forest tile diagonally down left from that road where there were more units ready to reinforce the wounded one if need be. sasha is actually worse at locking down CO powers in high funds because it means you earn meter faster, meaning that instead of her getting rid of your two stars you built up over multiple turns, you're likely to earn multiple stars in a single turn and just blitz past her ability to market crash. also, because CO powers get more expensive every time you use them, sasha cannot shut down faster CO powers over long games, meaning sasha is a CO that absolutely must win the earlygame or her advantage falls apart. Fortunately, her extra money is very effective at giving her such an earlygame advantage, plus she can delay (not shut down) cheaper powers like double time or max force enough to stay in the game.

Unless you can seal off your indirect units behind a defensive wall, I'd think Adder's power would be a strong counter to that type of play style. He'd be getting minor boosts routinely, and could catch you off guard or make up for the distance benefit of long-range units before you'd know it. Tank spam is probably solid gameplay meta anyways, but not wasting resources on potentially countered missiles or artillery seems especially meaningful here.

I feel like if you had done everything the same, but built a Medium tank instead of that rocket you would have been solid. You were crushing it up north and in the center, and a medium tank would have been able to hold the south. Then any hope you had was lost when you landed the rocket on the west side.

If it had been a medium tank, Excel's tanks would have simply backed off for a turn to let the bcopter come in and chip away at it. The medium tank would've been basically alone with no vision of where the enemy units are. It would not have ended very different.

Even if that rocket had been a medium tank, it would've been too little too late. Medium tanks don't have vision on their own, and your bcopter wouldn't be able to do much either, so it would've just caused the tanks to back off for a turn or two to let the bcopter come in and destroy it. Really, you lost as soon as you forced the battle line to be on Excel's side of the map, giving Excel a natural unit advantage due to proximity.

I feel like statistically, if you build primarily tanks, you're going to have more favorable engagements. Anything that can kill tanks easily requires a major monetary investment, something that most players can't afford to match in numbers if you just flood the map with tanks. The only exception is mechs, but similarly to Md tanks, they can just be avoided with better movement range.

Thought experiment: What if Mangs had built a medium tank instead of a rocket? That would have shut down the push into the southern area and possibly given him a chance to regain some ground. Then again, once the medium tank was spotted, the tanks would have just moved up north and started tearing that area up

It would have bought Mangs exactly one turn. Then Excel's bcopter would've shown up to chip away at it. By the time the rocket/MD Tank arrived, Mangs had no presence in that area, rendering both useless.
