I just stumbled upon this video.. hopefully you will tell us more about how you and your wonderful wooden sailboat crossed paths
@bendaves7711 ай бұрын
There's a channel called Wyllville and he is a craftsman who bought a old wooden sailboat. He's done work on it, hasn't uploaded for awhile but he's got some really cool videos including one on a multi fuel heater that he installed. Burns coal or wood and is quite the nice piece especially for wooden boats because it will help keep moisture down

Wyllville also has a great video on how to make your own mast boot for a sailboat like yours that's cheap and doesn't leak..

@@bendaves77 Much thanks... After developing an interest in this kind of boat, I first found Nina listed as a "cottage on the water" rental (through you-know-which online booking service). Then found old "for sale" listings, didn't like the price... then she popped up again for sale online at what seemed a good price... then after I looked her over the price dropped again. I took a huge risk, not getting her surveyed before buying, but she ticked all the boxes I required. I might have paid less if I'd waited, or someone else would have beat me to it. So far, it hasn't been too much of a strain to keep her and maintain access.

@SlowlySailing-lc1cs seems in this modern throw away world nobody wants old things.. the internet is full of old wooden sailboats and liveaboard power boats for sale for not alot of money.. I prefer the old traditional stuff because you know what you're getting..

Going to be an interesting series to watch. Might want to find a wooden boat shipwright for consulting or for some of the tougher jobs. Not sure what is available in your area. Otherwise, she looks to be in pretty good shape for sitting tied to a dock for 10 years. Bronze port lights are always nice to see on a classic sailboat. Check the rubber seals as that can be a source for leaks as well. A sailmaker might be able to repair or adjust / recut any sails that are stretched out too. Tan Bark sails always look nice. I had a set on my fiberglass boat and they always got attention.

I had plans to build a Tahiti in the Philippines in 1975 ... got plans direct from Mrs. Hanna ... but opted for a Dreadnaught years later. FYI: Do get the LP bottle OUT of the interior of the boat (potential leak hazard). All the best!!!

Many years ago, I built a Tahiti 2, and I still have the plans of which I copy at no cost for the serious builders who want a good sea-keeping vessel that will go anywhere. I put a lot of sea miles undr keel before I sold her. My present project is a full rebuild / restoration of a Herreshoff Marco Polo which had a very rough life..
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs Жыл бұрын
I'm actually in touch now with someone who has copies of Hanna's original drawings for the 30-foot ketch, otherwise I'd hit you up (the 2 is not exactly the same hull, anyway, right?) Always good to hear from a Tahiti owner- I have yet to hear from anyone who has actually owned one who didn't sing their praises. Good luck with the Herreshoff- a worthy project!

@@SlowlySailing-lc1cs The Tahiti 2 is 33ft long. But it is just a stretched version on the Tahiti. Weston Farmer, I beleive was the Draftsperson who did the work with John Hannas blessing. It was more than a worthwhile sailing vessel. You quite literally throw any weather at it and it would just shrug it off. It was brilliant sailing vessel for the Southern Ocean. Now I'm retired, I take the easy side of life. Mainly coastal and very little blue water.

The black standing rigging looks like black polyester. That material can work but the splices look really short and are then under cover so no one can see it to complain. I would suggest resplicing the stay shorter and simply use a longer lashing to make up the difference. Ideally, you would replace the standing rigging since everything is so old, but it will survive until you get to it as you rebuild the rest of it.
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs11 ай бұрын
FWIW, the rig is not original to the boat... she's had wire rope, turnbuckles, etc. over the years. But yeah, I think the current standing rigging is at least 15 years old. There are places where the black surface of the shrouds has tiny nicks, and you can see white below. Painted/coated cotton?? Anyway, I haven't looked at the cut ends yet, which would probably tell the tale. The whisker stays may actually not be the same material- might be poly. I really need to check the ends, I guess. I'm with you on that inner stay... hard to see in my vids so far, but originally the long bowsprit was not there, and the inner stay was fastened to a nice chainplate right at the bow. When the "jibboom" was added, they used that plate to bolt the slotted end of the long spar to the boat, and half-assedly rigged the stay farther forward. I'm dithing the jibboom, so I've been thinking maybe another deadeye with a spliced eye shackled to the chainplate (kind of like how the shrouds are attached- they are stainless below the lower deadeyes)., and another deadeye above, to make it easy to maintain tension. There's another "running" stay, fixed at the masthead, which ran through a block at the very end of the jibboom, and was clumsily tied to a cleat on the inner bowsprit. Why, I do not know. It really made things crowded up there, so I want to do the same lanyard setup for that. Anyway, thanks for your input! And if I may, one more question: the staysail (the primary foresail on this boat) has cringles to hank it to the inner stay... I have no hanks, and would love to make synthetic soft shackles to use as hanks. Opinions seem to vary, but what's your take on soft shackles riding on a cordage stay (as far as chafe goes)?

It’s an L. F. Herreshoff H-28, built in ‘47. She’s in pretty good shape despite not getting much attention the last 6 years. Biggest near-term projects are resealing the seams below the waterline, repowering from an old gas engine to a less old diesel and re-assembling the cockpit (previous owner had everything pulled out for a refit project that got put on hold). No. 1 goal is to at least get her floating next Spring!

Hey Sean. Great to finally get a good look at Maverick's younger sister ship from NC! Nina looks like shes in comparatively excellent shape, but she also hasnt been neglected on land for 15 years either. A wooden boat left afloat always fares better than one left on land. It looks like were quite literally in the same boat. Im not a sailor (yet), Maverick is my first boat, and this is also my first refit/ rebuild. On another note, I'll be very curious to see how your cutter rig performs compared to my ketch rig. Its been said that Jack Hanna's origanal ketch rig design is a bit underpowered for the size of these boats. I wonder if that huge main sail might be a better option. Anyway, keep up the good work. I'll give a shout out to your channel in my next video. -Matt
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The main is a gaff rig- not sure how many sq ft the sail is, but it may not be much bigger than the typical ketch mainsail.
@SavingMaverick55 Жыл бұрын
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs Ive got a gaff main and marconi mizzen. I can tell from the video that, even without the topsail addition, your mast is taller than my main. Also, the boom is at least twice as long as my main boom. Your boom rest is mounted way astern, mine is bolted to the aft house top sides.
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs Жыл бұрын
@@SavingMaverick55 I guess it would be useful for me to measure all that stuff... but I'm still guessing my main sail area is about the same as yours (maybe a little bigger). If your ketch is set up to fly a proper jib or genoa that overlaps the main, you could probably get her sailing pretty quickly. Nina has a pretty small staysail, and to get more power, I will have to raise two or three of the little yankees, which is a bit of work. But they're both Tahitis... wondering which would be faster would be like wondering if a four-legged turtle is faster than a three-legged turtle. They are notoriously slow, and don't go to windward very well. I don't care much- looking forward to making this slow boat go as fast as she can, which has its own excitement. Anyway, someday maybe we will have a race, LOL!!

I wonder if the bowsprit could come off until the restoration is further underway to shorten the overall length and save on dock fees and haul out/yard fees.I’ve seen these cutters built of wood and ferrocement,nice boat.
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs Жыл бұрын
I didn't get charged extra for the long bowsprit, but have removed the extension (jibboom?) anyway, as I can rig the boat as I want without it. At one time this boat only had the short sprit and topmast, allowing two more sails forward of the staysail. Even with a pulpit (which I want to add eventually) going all the way out there on the long bowsprit to deal with sails would be perilous, especially when sailing alone.
@lonestaradventures8838 Жыл бұрын
Have a look at British boats and how they use foldable bowsprits. They use a sliding ring with block and tackle to move the sail to end of bowsprit once you rig it on deck. It works great and no need for any pulpits. Great looking boat.. I had to sell off out tahitiana 32 as it was too far gone..metal boat.. Will be a great boat for all winds. Get a light air sail used..maybe an assynetric or drifter..makes all the diffrence. Will be tuning in for the progresa
@SlowlySailing-lc1cs Жыл бұрын
I'm going to try the shorter fixed bowsprit for now, but I am familiar with the British style; it makes sense. Sorry to hear about your Tahitiana... steel has a lot going for it, but I'd rather chase rot and worms than rust. Been thinking about a drifter eventually... but for now, I weill see what I can do with the suite of sails she came with.

Tom Cunliffe's book hand reef and steer 2nd edition will cover some of the more oddities of the gaff rig cutter, it has a great section on sails and to get the most out of the rig and some improvements you might be able to implement. The extra stick on the top of the mast is called the fidded topmast it's for the topsail so you don't need to use a yard like on a pole mast. Another Gaffer channel is How to Sale Oceans channel which is another 30 foot gaffer.
