I own an Iomega (an EMC company) NAS. Model Iomega StorCenter px4-300d with 4 4tb HDD. It worked 7-9 years ago when i purchased it. Been collecting dust but got it for $299 -HDD cost. Can I/should I overwrite the NAS OS (firmware) with something open source, mainly cause its hard to find the latest update do to its age? Any help would be appreciated.

If you are using it as a dumb file store, pretty much any budget motherboard, CPU, and RAM will do. I repurposed my desktop built in 2017. If you are planning to stream and encode video off of it ala PLEX, get a beefier CPU. No need for a graphics card.

No access to router = no port forward. You can still build the nextcloud server, but its only accesible from local LAN, not internet.

Have a look at ZeroTier, you can access NC wherever you have the ZT client installed, it’s also more secure than having NC open to the internet

i bought a qnap 8 bays HDD with Ryzen1500/ Not cheap but two ou threee big advantages: - Operating system use a filesystem ZFS powerfull - at this time, there are inside 22To of seagate HDD, in fact inside 176To installed and no necessary RAIF on it because all disks are static use, not dynamics disks.... - more security than linux based OD of free NAS!!! Sorry but personal datas are fully important, and using a secure system is an absolute necessary. And making NAS with disks 1 tu 2 To is not interesting, it's a better choise tu buy a synology with two raid 2To. Power energy is less than big motherboards....
