Step By Step Dirt Hole Set For Coyote Trapping- The Management Advantage #69

Our predator trapping methods, especially our dirt hole sets, have been the same for years. People are always asking for the “magic bean” to improve their success, but there isn’t one. Good tools, equipment, and location is what it’s all about. This week we take you through the step by step process of creating one of our favorite trapping setups, the dirt hole.
A simple dirt hole setup is a great trapping set for the novice to seasoned. The more of these sets you make, the better you’ll become at it and that’s where your trapping success can excel. Mastering the setup is the biggest key. The assortment of lures is great, but don’t think failure is because of a particular lure. Use one you are confident it, master the setup, and utilize tools to make it an easy process and your trapping success will improve.

I absolutely love your humor and humility in this video. We trappers get such a bad name and with the activists and propaganda, it’s hilarious to watch you, after months of trapping, and see your expression of “yeah, it’s been a heck of a long season” and be able to put your hand in the trap, without even saying a word, proving the “leg hold trap damage point” to the anti-trapper activists, and laugh at yourself about getting more dirt in your mouth than worrying about the trap on your hand. It’s really similar to how we used to laugh at ourselves after being up for so long we couldn’t sleep during those long deployments. I’m surprised I didn’t find this video sooner but have to tell you that it brightened my day. Good trapping and long lines. Jamie

hell u might not have this account now but i was watching coyote trapping school and he caught a bobcat and it was asleep in the trap. really shows how much gut wrenching pain they are in. she didnt wake up till he shut the truck door

Ok, great information, but how deep and big do you make your hole for the trap, and how do you make them on dry, hard, ground? My dad and I set a couple yesterday, and today we found one had been dug out (the other was undisturbed). Also, what exactly do you do with the chain? We put it underneath the trap, but it made it too wobbly and the dirt is so dry that it didn't really help when we tried to pack it around the trap to stabilize it. Anyways, thanks for the info! ❤

2 quick questions . New to trapping with dirt sets I am still gathering all my equipment and reading reading reading to be effective and ethical to the owners property and animals I'm targeting.i run endless coon cuffs sets but that is child's play compared to outsmart the coyote . #1 everyone talks about the minut smells a coyote can pick up on your set but I also see you use different color dirt in some videos. Is it imperative to use dirt from the same property that you've harvested weeks before and dried it out prior to covering your pan???#2 the property I am trapping is only 60 acres I know I can overwhelm the area with to many traps but the dogs are not using the property to den so targeting a specific path or natural terrain pinch point is almost impossible , it is only a feeding location that is accessed in all directions ,for instance they come over the hill with no natural funnel, from across the road into large open fields. How many traps would you set to be effective in something like this ???

Casey, the coyotes in the area that i trap will only engage a set that has coyote urine. Ive only ever had one coyote get caught in a trap that i used fox urine. What time of year is better for coyotes. November and December, or January and February.

Keep it "simple"??? Dude has TWO five gallon buckets full of tools AND a POWER auger. Never understood the need to anchor a trap in the ground in the middle of an open space. Wire the trap to a tree or use a toggle drag. The coyote doesn't care where the set is or what the trap is anchored to. It also doesn't care if you use expensive lure and bait, or simply use dog food. I've caught them with dog food and dead birds before. I mean its pro to use all the accessories and tools, but completely unnecessary if you understand coyote behavior and how to put in a good set with minimal gear.

I wasn't telling him how to trap. He was telling other successful trappers how to "keep it simple" which contradicted the technique he was showing. Again, I don't have a problem with the way he traps, other than it is not by ANY stretch a "simple" way to do it.
