This step by step guide section will cover feeding your guppies for optimum growth.
The best food to feed your guppies is live baby brine shrimp. It is ez to hatch & feed.
It is highly beneficial to feed your baby and some adult guppies 1 feeding of live bbs daily. The live bbs has much higher nutrients than any other food, nothing is lost during processing because there is no processing like with other prepared foods.
You want to get the salinity to 1.018 to 1.020 and use a hatcher with a steady airflow. Let the hatcher hatch the eggs for 24 to 36 hours. You will want to feed the fish with the live bbs within 8 or so hours of hatching to maximize the nutrients in the shrimp. The fish are naturally attracted to the movement of the live bbs and they can probably also smell it. The live bbs can last in your tank for many hours which means the fish have a continuous food
supply for a few hours.
You will need a hatcher, brine shrimp eggs, non iodized salt, a brine shrimp net, collector cup, syringe to feed the fish and a flashlight. You want to get the hatchers' temperature to 78 or more degrees. There are various hatchers on the market. From
small s f bay brand hatchers to 2 liter conical hatchers and even 5 gallon or 10 gallon hatchers. Some people convert 2 liter soda bottles to use as hatchers.
I use 1 scoop of baking soda in the hatcher to increase the ph. I use 3 scoops of eggs and 1 measuring device of the non iodized salt. I keep a light on the hatchers for 16 hours per day as the shrimp are attracted to light. Some people use 5 drops of
bleach in their hatcher. This will loosen up the egg cyst casings and may give you a better hatch rate. I have no experience with that but I will try it soon. Do not use too large of a quantity of eggs as more is definitely not better. It will cause the hatch to crash and you will end up with a smelly mess.
I also use a high protein, high density food that I mix up in addition to a feeding
of live bbs. This is a powder and granule mix of 5 or 6 of the best high protein foods.
If you are interested in buying it, just email me at greydmail@yahoo.com for a special price of $9.00 per 4 ounce container, plus $2.00 shipping. Or I sell it on ebay or aquabid for $14.00 a container under my seller id, greyd
Any questions, email me at greydmail at yahoo.

Thank-you D-Grey for posting this Video. And those black males are really pretty too! I LOVE that you are explaining the hatching the baby brine shrimp. I have been holding back on hatching the baby brine shrimp. I have been looking for someone to explain each step in detail. Thanks again. You have helped alot.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I liked that platinum mosaic big ear strain a lot but it kinda crapped out on me. Live baby brine shrimp or daphnia are 2 of the best foods to feed guppies.

And an idea for more videos, you could do strain spotlights, where you talk about ins and outs of each strain and how you choose breeders and what you look for in juveniles as they're developing, etc. Fishroom tours are always good. I love seeing those. Even if you kinda draw it out a bit and just do one row at a time. How to pack guppies to ship to shows.

Your ideas are very good and I will probably go back to videos of strains and how to maintain them, select etc like you mentioned. Maybe I can even make a video of how I bag fish to ship too.

You could also do a video explaining a bit about IFGA standards and maybe compare 2-3 fish that are close to the standard and a couple that don't meet the standard.

Excellent video! I just have pet store guppies, not show guppies, and only 3 tanks. I've done the frozen baby brine shrimp. Probably not quite as good as live, but I don't have room for a hatchery. But I'm already seeing a difference in growth even just using frozen compared to what I was feeding before. Very cool about your flake food. I'll be in touch soon to order some. 😊
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Renee! There are small hatcheries, like san fran bay sells. It's cool to watch them hatch and the fish go nuts for them. Then again there's no mess with the frozen stuff and you can just watch videos of fish eating the live bbs and you have nothing to clean up :)

How many different strains do you have. How many new strains are you working on.
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Way too many strains :) The main ones are red lace snakeskins, red deltas, black deltas, black moscows, black lace snakeskins, red/blue grass metalheads, red grass, yellow deltas, pingus, half black blues. The other new strains and crosses, are the snow white albinos, santa claus guppies, galaxy guppies, japan blue doubleswords and the firetail ones. A few others in limited tanks. I sell some, but generally not the lines I enter in ifga shows.

Nice video, new to your channel. Im just getting back into guppies, been fishkeeping for 20 yrs. Ive only ever kept mutts and usually select breed. I like gold bodies and ended up with a nice 125ga full. They mostly died (saved 4 males) off as my community fish picked them off and my interests focused elsewhere. You have alot of beautiful fish.

Hi D...was so happy to see you posted another video...love looking at all your guppies and your info on how to with baby brine shrimp. When you mentioned the sea monkey's..I actually laughed as I remember as a wee little kid having them. We're showing "our age" when we call baby brine Sea Monkeys ...Hey..you ready for the snow coming weds? And what do you do if power goes out??? Maybe do a video on tips on what to do in an emergency if your power ever goes out....( I have a little bubble air pump/filter that runs on batteries for my little tank) but what do you do for all those tanks you have? Thanks again for posting..look forward to more of your videos.

Rhia, thanks and I hope you are doing well! I decided to have a backup generator installed. It was supposed to be done in December but with the early cold weather it's been pushed back to spring. Other than that I just sit around and pray if the power goes out! The fish can do ok with no bubbling as long as the water changes were kept up with. I gave up on the aquaclear power filters because they'd never self start after a power outage and I'd lose fish. I must have a box of the filters somewhere.

The live baby brine shrimp is higher in nutrients than any other live food you can easily feed your fish. Nothing wrong with daphnia, it's harder to find here in my area.

Hi, I am enjoying your videos! I got my first guppies a couple months back - a group of "multi delta x blue moscow" fry. Just recently separated males and females. You mentioned the long fins on a female in the bluegrass metal heads. One of the females I'm growing out has a nice long dorsal fin, and I'm thinking that she's the one I should breed. In your experience is this something that can be passed on? Thanks!
@DGrey
@DGrey 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! I hope your new fish do well. It does get passed on, not to all of the females but you should get a few in each batch. I don't think it corresponds to the males' dorsal though. Some of the long fin stuff can also skip a generation.

Mark, I am not sure on that. I streamlined the use of electricity by using led lights, no tank heaters and a 40 watt pump supplying the air. The house heater and a/c regulates the room temp.

Hi, I enjoyed your video even if I am late to the game. I won 2nd place in 8th grade science fair with my "sea monkeys". Your strainer is sold with every new coffee pot as a permanent filter. You can also buy them w/o a new coffee maker. I have a question please, If your using baking soda and table salt then suck the shrimp up and squeeze them into the tanks arent you in effect changing your PH with every feeding ? Sincerely, Granny Hatchet
@DGrey
@DGrey 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Granny, accept my long overdue congrats on your work with sea monkeys! After the hatch is ready I strain the shrimp in to the sieve and then I dump that in to a brine shrimp/sea monkey net to get all of the water out. I empty the net, which then only contains the sea monkeys, in to a container of aged fresh water. I couldn't show any of that in the video unless I come up with a camera man so I can use both hands. If I were to use the hatch water and feed from there it would probably kill the fish or as you said at least greatly alter the water chemistry.
