My ideas on the best methods for optimizing your success with raising fancy and show type Guppies. Some people will say just put a male and female together in a tank and wait 30 days but there is more to it than that.
1st and most important is to obtain a true breeding quality stock, or just fish that you like. Then feed them 2 to 4 times a day with a high protein and a varied diet. Best results will be obtained with a feeding of live baby brine shrimp ( bbs) per day. Next best option is to use high protein foods, such as, but not limited to, decaps eggs, golden pearls, flake foods, spirulina, brine shrimp flake etc.
Water changes are imperative, either 50% per week or a couple 30% changes per week. More importantly do them as the fish exhibit any signs of stress.
I keep water sprite at the tops of my tanks and or java moss at the bottoms. Once the female is fully conditioned and within a few days of dropping fry, as shown in the video, place her in a small tank with plants for cover for her and the babies. Try not to move the female if she is visibly close to dropping the batch of babies. After she drops the fry, remove the female back to her tank or a small temporary tank.
Raise the babies in the small container for a week with 3 small feedings a day, preferably 1 with live bbs. I use a mix of powdered high protein foods, that I may start selling soon. After a week in the small container move them to a 5 and a 1/2 or a 10 gallon tank. Continue, feedings, water changes over the next few weeks and then once you can start to tell males from females put all the males in to a different 10 gallon tank and raise them in there. Select the best males with the color and finnage traits you desire. Put 2 pair in to a 2 and a 1/2 or 5 and a 1/2 gallon tank to repeat the process of obtaining new drops of babies. I also use a younger male in breeding tanks in case the larger older males are unable to catch up with the females.
You will have to cull out any deformed fish or ones that exhibit colors you don't like or poor finnage. After 6 months of age it's not necessary to feed the adult males with live bbs or frozen brine shrimp as it could make them appear to 'chesty'. I'll add to the video description as I remember other important things :)

it's so satisfying seeing female guppies about to pop. i used to have a big tank of pregnant ass female guppies til i donated most of them to my local non profit local pet store. then i adopted dwarf gourami, got red cherry barbs and only had 3 guppies. im starting my all guppy tank up again bc i will be donating the dwarf gourami as hes becoming aggressive and my female guppies can lay their fry. i can't wait to have an all guppy tank again!!!!

Thank you so much for watching! Guppies are fun but they do multiply like crazy. I always liked dwarf gouramis. I'm pretty sure the females are never sold in stores unless they buy from local breeders. Keeps people coming back I guess.

Do you find that albino strains are less hardy and more difficult to breed and raise? I have tried some full albino red and blue topaz albino strains this year. The adults seem to be much more prone to getting sick and dying. Just slow death with no visible illness like ich. When they have bread the broods have been small. I also notice the albino adults seem to be much more aggressive about hunting down the fry. Any tips before I try the albino strains again.
@DGrey
@DGrey 4 жыл бұрын
I do think albino strains are more fragile, less prolific etc. Every once in a while you will get a female that has large batches of fry every 30 days or so but it seems to be a rarer thing. Maybe you can try feeding the fish some medicated flakes for a few days to see if you can clean their systems out. I've used fenbendazole and levamisole with some success. I keep a lot of water sprite at the top of the tanks with albino adults. The babies seem more or less blind at birth and tend to swim right in front of the hungry parents. Vision improves as they age and the plants help give them a [lace to hide and cut down on the light some too.

Do you have any suggestions on guppies that have gotten severely inbred? These guppies are very thin and some had what appeared to be scoliosis. I have culled the sick ones but am hoping I can breed them back up to being healthy fish. There are probably about 30-40 of them in my tank at the moment. Thank you and thanks for showing what healthy guppies are supposed to look like!
@DGrey
@DGrey 3 жыл бұрын
The best thing you can probably do is pick out the largest and healthiest looking males and females and build on that by using them as breeders. If there's a way to run 2 tanks of them or 2 colonies of them you could then cross the best from each tank every couple of generations.

Thank you for watching! It's genetics and also selecting for breeders the females with the thickest caudal peduncle area. That usually means her male fry will have a thicker body and be able to support the large wide tail. There was a couple of shades of blue or purple in those males. The color should be uniform.

Beautiful a Guppies!!. Nice video. Quick question, I have a spike of ammonia ( my first tank). I did the water changes to reduce the concentration but it seems that 2 of the them are very bad. They have red guils and are all day at surface , have difficult time to get oxygen in their blood. Do you you know if guppies can survive an ammonia spike and if you can advice any medication or treatment that I can buy....or perhaps it is too late...thanks !!!!
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex! I hope your fish will survive. Besides doing the water change and siphoning out any dirt, dead fish etc you can try something like seachem am-guard or add a little filter bag of api ammo0chips or any similar brand. Fish stores usually sell little mesh bags to add to a filter or even to put in the tank. People put oyster shells in it for cichlids or the ammonia reducing stuff for tanks with high ammonia, another good product I think it was called zeolite.

Hi Great video. What is the ideal space needed for breeder guppies and growout stage guppies ?
@DGrey
@DGrey 4 жыл бұрын
I use different tanks for different stages of the guppy growth. For newborn fry I keep them in a 1 gallon or 2 and a 1/2 gallon tank for 2 weeks so they can find the food easily. After that I move them to a 5 & a 1/2 and will start culling to remove the smaller ones. Once they reach 3 months at most I put them in to a 10 gallon tank and cull any males that have color discrepancies. For breeders I use a 5 & a 1/2 for a trio to 2 pair.

Sorry that is happening. I'd really need to see a pic of them but it sounds like it could be a combination of ich and a fungus. When fish get sick with a disease it weakens them and they can get other problems as well. I'd put the sick fish in a small tank and treat that tank with rid-ich and a fungus medicine.

Guppies breed no matter what so the tetras shouldn't bother them however they may eat the fry. I keep 2 to 3 trios of guppies in each 10. With some strains, like the pink pingu's I keep 1 male to 4 females.

@DGrey
@DGrey 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! Normally the 1st batches can occur after 3 months rare but possible before that too. 1st batches are usually small, just a few fish. Once the female's body 'squares off' meaning the front of the stomach is squarish and the area near the anal fin dialates, she will have fry imminently.

Hi, do you think that water changes can increase the growing speed? And how often do you change water to the fry? I've noticed that if i dont do water changes every day/ 2 they dramatically stop growing even completely stop(but that is in the case that I dont change it in months) also that brine shrip is the only way to make them grow
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
I think the water changes help enable the faster growth. Since they are in small containers with no filter I change a 1/3rd of their water every other day. I agree with you that water changes are Super important as is the live baby brine shrimp.

Shouldn't you put her in a separate tank once she has her cry so she can heal for a couple days? Just asking because I have my female in the breeder box now and she's ready to drop any second and I bought the net breeder that also hangs on my tank so I have a place for the fry that they can't escape through the holes and I planned on leaving my mama guppy in the other box for about 48-72 hours before I put her back in the tank
