Just found you and really enjoying your videos! I’m an intermediate hobbyist for fish keeping and guppies is what got me started back when I was only 10 years old, but after a lot of different fish I came back to them and they’re nothing but pure enjoyment. They have personalities like goldfish almost and are very curious fish, mine love enrichments like wood and plants - and I use duck weed for my top coating for the babies to hide in. They also know feeding time and aren’t afraid of my hand, some will even swim right into my hand and I can cup them out of the water (not for long, of course). Anyways, love your videos and they are definitely educational! Looking forward to more from you :D

That is one of my favorite aspects of guppies, how active they are. They are all over the place all the time! Guess that is why they have relatively short lifetimes. I've lost two females to something... they seemed fine, got big and pregnant and then died before giving birth. One did that not long after I got her, the other gave birth to two fry (that's all I saw) and the second time I bred her she died. The two young females are doing fine, as are four tetras in the tank who seem like good companions for the guppies. Also, female guppies are hard to find!!! The pet stores sell out as soon as they get them. I have twelve males in a separate tank and my two young females in another. So I'm having to catch a male and put him in with the females to breed. Would like to have enough females to make a community tank, but so far no luck!

Sure! You may have to add it slowly to either your substrate (my preferred method) or a filter, but it is certainly effective at raising pH and keeping it relatively stable for decently long periods of time.

I've had serious problems with chain store guppies too. I almost lost all of them. I bought some from a private breeder and they have been fine for months. Is hard water a must? I have been looking into guppies but given the poor water quality where I am I purchase filtered water and it is soft often in the 75 - 100 PPM. I have red wag platys that have flourished under these water conditions and have had fry etc. I was just curious what your would recommend? Thanks
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 6 жыл бұрын
I think part of it may depend on where they were bred. Most of the guppies around here tend to like the slightly harder water.
@broj2371
@broj2371 6 жыл бұрын
My understanding is hard water for them is necessary. I have super soft water (KH 1, GH 2, pH ~6) and I have to buffer my water a lot. I was using epsom salts and baking soda or buying remineralized RO water from the LFS but have recently purchased seachem equilibrium and alkaline buffer for home. Time will tell how good these products are.

whats the most ammount of guppies you can keep in a 10 gallon. mine keep staying near the top. maybe it is because i just got them. is there any way to test oxygen levels? i am running the aqua clear 10, should i run an air stone? i only have 4 guppies, one hatchet fish, a corydora
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 6 жыл бұрын
As long as your tank is cycled I don't think O2 should be an issue. Guppies do like to be near the surface frequently, so that's not necessarily unusual. If they're up there gulping for air that may be a different story. Four or five is a decent amount of a 10 gallon. You may have to remove fry that grow up if things start getting a little crowded. Good luck!

I don't know of anyone has an answer to this question, but I was curious about using API pond accu-clear in an aquarium. Since the normal dosage is 0.25 cup per 600 gallons, the dosage per 1 gallon would be 2 drops.... the question is, is this product safe to use in an aquarium setting? My guppies have long stringy clear poop. I'm afraid there could be an internal parasite. Do you have any suggestions as far as a cure?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Papa Reno G. It's really hard to say what could be going on. It could be an internal parasite or it could be partially related to diet/stress. If it is an internal parasite there are many options, but they have semi-specific targets, so choosing the wrong med may be ineffective. Some have luck with metronidazole, praziquantel, fenbendazole or levamisole. If it is an internal parasite these medications are better used when mixed in feed and may be less effective if placed in the water column (although not necessarily ineffective). Sorry I can't be more exact, but without fecal smears and a microscope it's almost impossible to positively I.D. the causative agent.
@HarrisonCountyStudio
@HarrisonCountyStudio 6 жыл бұрын
I’m not too familiar (fortunately) with internal parasite, however, would a ‘salt bath’ help?
@cryoraptora303tm2
@cryoraptora303tm2 6 жыл бұрын
Is it often or all the time, or only occasionally? If it's occasionally then it's probably fine, but if it's happening a lot then it's definitely possible. Are they becoming very thin? If they are very thin then it would be internal parasites. The treatment has already been recommended so I won't go into that. Unfortunately a lot of the time it becomes impractical to treat the ill fish and euthanasia is required. I might sound a bit pessimistic but whenever I got a fish that had internal parasites I just euthanized it, a lot of the time it's really not worth it to try and treat an individual fish when there's no guarantee that the treatment will even work. If it's tank-wide then you should try treating it first but other than that if the fish has got to the stages where it's extremely thin and wasting away I would put it out of it's misery because the prognosis is probably poor at that point.
@cryoraptora303tm2
@cryoraptora303tm2 6 жыл бұрын
+HarrisonCountyStudio Not being rude, but the clue is in the name 'internal parasite'. How would a salt bath help if the parasite is living in the insides (more specifically the intestines) of the fish? That's like saying skin cream will cure salmonella. It's nonsense.

I tend not to have a lot of issues with babies getting eaten. I feed the parents well and provide cover in the form of plants like hornwort. I probably wouldn't worry too much about the cory cats because the babies spend most of their time at the top of the tank.

A few days ago I bought some baby feeder guppies. I just couldn't stand the thought of babies being eaten alive. My tank was cycled, filtered, heated, and planted. I didn't think that they could fit into my filter. I had 15 babies go into the filter and die while I was asleep. I cried. I just wanted them to have a good life and they got killed. I have 3 little babies left and a new sponge filter that can't hurt them.

Hello from Taiwan I'm an American and I just purchased for guppies I got to say yeah they're great fish they really don't croak like bettas. Yeah you know I've had three bettas and one died for who knows why also I had another one who developed a skin infection and then my other one she accidentally went down the sink I'm very careful with fish although I'm new to the fish industry I didn't know that bettas can jump out of their water. Also I found that bettas are very sensitive like I have a filter a pump I've got a large enough acrylic tank I bought everything you know I could need plant food for the plant Water Conditioner a good source of food from Japan I mean everything that's needed I purchased and I found that sadly people give me different information on bettas in Taiwan. They told me that bettas don't need a lot of space and they said that they can survive and there are strong Hardy fish but actually I found that they're not. it's very easy for them to get sick and die I'm very careful about not over-feeding my environment is super clean I think for the first three fish because I didn't have a filter and an air-pump I think they passed away was told that I needed to do a 25% water change which I was doing and then they said at the end of 3 days do a 100% water change not only did they say that but they gave me three different answers regarding to water change cuz I went to three different pet stores looking for stuff that I needed. I have a betta he's doing well but he contracted a site skin infection 3 days ago and I went to purchase medicine but they said it's not needed to use aquarium salt and that he should recover but truly I don't know if that's true or not so I'm going to another fish store tomorrow yeah I love bettas and Guppies but for some reason if my betta doesn't survive I will be purchasing Guppies for my other tank because I have two

Hmm... It looks like a couple of those females in the tank you showed at the beginning of the video have internal parasites. It's easy to spot because they look extremely thin and wasted away. I'm sure you already know this but you can treat them using medicated food that you can buy from a local pet store or fish store. Some people will say to use garlic but imo it's a waste of time.

PetSmart and Petco have really stressed fish. If they aren't showing signs of sickness when you buy them... They almost always will with in the first few days. That is I'd they live that long. I also was thinking I was doing something wrong with guppies and neon tetras. That was until I bought some from a local aquarium store. I paid a bit more per fish but have not lost one. PROOF it was not something I was doing wrong but truely the quality of the fish themselves. Poor fish☹️🐠🐟🐡🐚🦐🦀🐙🦈🐬🐋🐳🐠🐠
