I would have used 318 heads ported with bigger valves just for the port velocity alone 360 heads work ok but not until about 4000+ and you need higher compression I know I have built many through the years. On a 318 your compression better be at the minimum 10:1 if you want to see the benefits of the bigger ports.

I agree. For any engine that has way over 200,000 miles... the exhaust seats are going to be worn out of useable spec. Better to just replace heads with low mileage units from a wreck. DAMHIK. Fooling with them is a fool's errand. Valve springs will be sacked out too.

Uncle Tony, this series is great. i have watched every minute. i am eventually going to have to deal with the heads and rings in my studebaker 170 six cyl.. it was run with a flooding carb most of its life, according to the records that came with it. It had more carbon than a burned down forest, and more leakdown than a drained lake. and blowby good enough to make the oil a high grade fuel. assorted rings and valves were sticky. since last June i have started and drove it a bit here and there, and it came around last month, believe it or not. The Daytona universal carb was a better match than the original Carter RBS unibarrel.

A funeral home can supply polished granite to dress cylinder heads. Use spray adhesive to secure sandpaper and slide the head. They can get you granite in any length you need. To check the deck surface use a marble base that is used in trophies. I get these trophies from yard sales. I also use the granite slab to sharpen curling rocks. See my videos on KZbin.

Not in my experience. If you drive it every day it doesn’t take long at all. Three months and it worn, six months is worse. A year and it’s worn out. Remember, this is my personal experience. The best thing is to put in hardened valve seats or a late model head.

@@ryandavis7593 Daily I deal with this shit on air-cooled b+s engine powered generators powered by lp/Nat gas. The recommended valve adjustment every 100hrs. I've seen em not start in 180hrs without an adjustment. Not sure how the new customers generator I fixed last week ran until 380hrs without an adjustment. There wasn't one loose rocker at all and they gotta be .006🤦 No compression, fucks up the intake vacuum signal and the regulator won't allow proper fuel draw. See it all the time , it's surprising how much shit they can handle actually. But wearing valves so bad that the adjustment can close up totally by 200hrs is nuts you're not doing your valves any favors. That's what people don't realize about LP, it sucks as an upper end lube and wears out the top end alot faster. That gasoline is actually lube for the valves. I've had plenty of gasoline units with plenty of clearance at 100hrs, but still set them cause you're there.

Made that mistake positioning /wrestling with a 750 # stand with one wheel up front when turning the block over. Whole thing tipped and I had to catch itin my arms before it took out my knee's, my stocking feet and the floor. The wheel trail in the wood hall way floor from my room remained for many years. I know you can do a 318 intake on a 360 and it will boost torque . also running 340/360 exhaust manifolds on a 273 / 318 heads will cause leaks/ burn outs of the gaskets just like with the headers since the ports are different ?

360 cranks have larger mains and stroke. 263,318, and 340 all use identical cranks some cast some forged. Then heads depend on year and what the engine was put into. For the most part 318 heads are small port/valve. 360 heads are larger port/valve, but have larger combustion chambers, 340s normally have large port/valves with the smaller chamber. Then 273 are normally small port/valve as well. That’s just typically what you’ll find, there are many different LA heads that got swapped through all the different bottom ends

I'm buying a 1998 Dodge Durango 4+4 ,either 318 or 360,with 200k miles, should I put a set of refurbished heads on it? I want to drive it to Canada from Texas? Any opinion on should I get the 318.or 360 model? It's going to be a 98 to 2001, I don't want any newer because of the 4.7 motor I think is junk!

The liquid in the combustion chamber to see if the valves are seating is no good, you can get them perfect and as soon as you bolt the head to the block the seat WILL distort! and the seal is GONE! we proved this many times to people that "know" better than the machinist that was running the SERDI Seat and Guide center all day every day! Get some fresh heads and pull a vacuum on the port and then again after it's bolted to the block and then after the engine has been run and see for yourself.

@@waynefergusson9987 You would check the spring pressures once the heads are disassembled. They are components for the head and parts of the valve train. So it could go either way depending on whom you ask. IE; Is the glass is half empty or half full? We will see what happens on an upcoming video.😎

@Superduper DavidMiorgan How do you know a valve that is sunken already... doesnt also have a mushroomed stem that is now at the same level as the rest, because the seat is sunken and the valve stem now sits higher despite being mushroomed? Didnt you read? Valves can have multiple problems...

Quick question Tony. I have a 64 polara 4 door. It's equipped with a 318 poly. The current poly smokes and drinks oil like a rockstar. I have another poly I can plunk in but I also have a 73 360. I'm conflicted on which way to go. Could you give me your opinion on which way to go? The car will be a daily driver but I'd like to hit the track on occasion and parts for the 360 are more widely available and more affordable. I do love the poly though. What direction would you go?

Most definitely and make sure the water jackets don't have residual cleaning abrasive falling out , I use a quick shot of shaving cream in all the deck side water holes in a head, keeps any crap from falling in the fresh cylinders and even though most are cut with a 3 angle knife these days ,check valve seat concentricity , you might find they need a light touch with a stone to be perfectly round as the lifting of the knife creates a small irregularity on the seat surface ,but thats just me
