A wood bully if you would pull your measurements from your framework you could do away with all that, adding an inch and tracking an inch out makes it a lot easier my man I know I’ve been in the business for over 20 years

The one thing I would have done differently is cut the back of the stringer rather than the 1.5” off each rise. I’ve since changed my methods

I like the idea of adding 1.5" to the run and using 2x8 as your riser. I will be using that on my deck stairs this season! Thanks for the good tip!

Glad to hear it! I did make one step longer than it needed to be. I could have simply cut the 1.5” out of the back of the top step rather than all of them. 🤦♂️

Even faster than cutting 1 1/2" of the top rise is to take the 1 1/2" off the run before you mark it out - no extra marks or cuts. The other thing I do is pull level off the frame to where the bottom step is going and get my total height from there. That way if the grade is sloped my case is still plumb. Great videos. Keep up the good work!

Yes. You are right. I actually did a video recently highlighting that.

One thing I’m confused on and have been trying to understand is the tread depth how is that determined to meet with the riser height
@iaincampbell3119 Жыл бұрын
Your tread depth + riser height added together should be somewhere between 17-18".

If you have a landing set in stone you have to adjust your rise to accomade the length, sometimes you have to add or subtract one step making the rise smaller or larger while staying in limit to accommodate the distance of the landing. For instance a rise of 37.5” and a landing at 60” away. 5 steps at rise 7.5 run 10” would be 37.5” rises but only 50” run so you add a step, making 6 10” steps, 60” run total, and 6 6.25” rises, still 37.5 inch rise just more steps. Make any sense or am I just rambling?

Typically yes

You just "weakened" the stringers by taking 1 1/2" off of every riser, plus you wasted time. All you had to do was, take 1 1/2" off of the back of the top rise, and it would've set the stringer back 1 1/2", allowing for a 2x8 for each riser.

Thanks for this. If you any other tips that could make the process more efficient. My ears are open.

To my defence the throat was still more than minimum code. But I feel like your method would have been a time saver
@levelseven98412 жыл бұрын
The problem with stringers, even though you put the crown up, as soon as you cut them they tend to crown the other way. That's why the bigger the throat the better. Just like if you were to put several notches in the back of a board to bend it around a curve. That's exactly what happens to a stringer. Putting 2x? on every riser is a great idea, not only does it strengthen it also keeps all the stringers on the same plane.
