One thing I noticed with making cards like ones you made (“what are the test results for ____?”) is that you may just memorize the order of the positive/negative or increase/decrease answers, rather than memorize what the test results will show. I noticed this when I did something similar (for example, I memorized that class 1B AADs caused all of what I listed on the card as “decrease” rather than learn that the drugs affect EFP, repolarization time, etc.) What helped me to get around this is to make a basic card that asks “why do class 1B AADs cause a prolonged repolarization time?” Then, I’d underline key points I need to remember (such as what ion channel is blocked, how long those drugs stay active in the ion channel, etc.) Also, it helps to make simple comparisons. Same example, I’ll make a card that’ll asks “how are class 1B and class 1C drugs different, in terms of rate of repolarization and effective refractory period?” You’ll spend more time on the card in the short run, but in the long term, you’re training your brain to make comparisons and connections to different things. So when you get into, say, arrhythmias and treatment options, you’ll know WHY you may use beta blockers in patients with stable or unstable angina, but not prinzmetal angina. Hope this is helpful. Doing this made my grades jump up exponentially

interesting technique. the only thing i would do differently is when typing the notes, preliminarily add the card first before typing a lot in the extra section. this way, you can expand on the notes in the extras section while in the browser. it’s very easy to exit without adding the card and having all your work erased. typing notes in the browser is a safety measure against this.

Omg, this is a great idea. This technique is better because I can now focus on the lecture instead of taking one note at a time and stopping. While each note has information on the entire section. Please mention that you need the frozen add on lol. New versions of anki have to be downloaded manually.

Hi Prerak! I saw your playlist for Anki but didn’t know where to start since there are a lot of videos that seems like it can start from anywhere. Could you maybe do an updated all-in-one video guiding through how to set up anki for 1st timer, which add-ons to install or useful for premeds, how to create cards/decks, how to organize it, etc. If you don’t have time, could you maybe write a guide on it or say which videos to watch in sequence to fully understand and utilize Anki? Thank you in advance!

You can do this on the app without the freeze add ons: 1) open Anki on a desktop 2) make sure you’re using the profile synced with your app 3) open a cloze flash card 4) on the extra portion there is a pin 📌 button that will save your notes even if you add a new flash card. (The pin acts like the freeze add on but syncs with the App) Tips: (for my keyboard might be slightly different on yours) Shift + Cntrl + C will make a cloze section Cntrl + enter will add the flash card to the deck you are in Shift + Arrow keys will highlight Cntrl + arrows keys makes your move around faster (instead of going to your mouse) These have just helped me take notes much faster without having to moved from the keyboard to my mouse multiple times. I used my iPad to take notes in class and use my phone to study and make flashcards when I’m waiting in my car or walking to the next lecture. I also use my phone to study while laying down instead of sitting in the chair. So I find much value in using the app instead of just the desktop. It makes studying more convenient and enjoyable

When making an anki card if i want to change a word while making the question, for example: If the question is ( What is my best day of the week?) and i want to change best to favorite, when i backspace through best and being typing favorite, it starts eating into ( day of the week). Instead of trying to remember every date, try to memorize the order things happened and anchor that sequence to a few key dates. I.e. if you're studying the American revolution, perhaps just work to memorize the date of the first battle, the date of the battle where the British first decisively lost, the final battle & the year of the peace treaty. Then you can build other sequential info in, fuzzy at first but in order, around that. I personally use Anki to memorize the names of certain less common figures (with a picture on the front of the card) and as prompts to remember conceptual summations (i.e.: what did Simon Schama say was the main reason Rembrandt didn't travel to Italy to study Renaissance painting?). Also, sit back & soak up all the free info you can get on the subjects you're interested in from YT. Find a good doc & listen to it a couple of times in the background while exercising, etc.

The biggest problem is why use flashcards in the first place. I have never used flashcards. I don't understand them. I don't know why anyone would want to use them. First, it takes a long time to write them. Second, it may take a long time to read them and get the answers correctly. Third, they look boring, tiring, tedious and time-consuming. Why not just read a book? In the same time you create and read flashcards you could just read a book. Or, if you are studying something like Physics of Mathematics, you should just solve a bunch of exercises from a textbook. Most textbooks have plenty of exercises for you to practice. All you have to do is solve them. The book author already prepared all the exercises for you, you don't need to write them, unlike flashcards. If you are learning a foreign language you should read as much as possible. Reading is the best way to acquire vocabulary. You consult the dictionary for the words necessary to understand the text. Reading is much more fun, entertaining and engaging than using flashcards. By reading you always see the word in context. Flashcards on the other hand take the words out of context. It is much harder to memorize and understand them. Flashcards are completely inefficient compared to just reading.

Are you in university? I don't know about anyone else, but my textbooks used to be around 2000 pages long, and it was extremely difficult memorizing everything just by reading over and over. Plus flashcards get you to engage with the text, and unless you have some amazing memory, active repetition will definitely help you understand and memorize the material just as you go along making them. Medical studies have it much worse with much more to memorize than university classes. The sizes of those textbooks are huge, and I never would have got through without Anki. Also he's not discouraging reading, this is just a form of memorizing information. You have to both memorize and read to understand the context and connections behind it all. They've never been boring or tedious to me since what you're doing as you're making them is essentially studying, and making 1000+ is easy in a few hours of hard work. If flashcards don't work for you, that's fine. It's not for everyone.

@@aldutroix3944 1. "Are you in university?" No. I studied Engineering at college a long time ago, and speak Portuguese, English, Japanese and am right now studying Swedish. You need to memorize a large number of words to learn a foreign language, but I have never used flashcards. 2. "my textbooks used to be around 2000 pages long, and it was extremely difficult memorizing everything just by reading over and over" When I was in college, nobody was required to memorize a 2000-page-long textbook. An exam was always about some chapters of a book. I have always studied by simply reading the chapters and solving exercises. Most textbooks have exercises for you to practice and the questions of the exam were all based on those exercises. 3. "I never would have got through without Anki" Millions of people all over the world get through without Anki or any kind of flashcard. Sure you can still use Anki, but I believe you are spending much longer to study than other people. I believe you could study and memorize much faster without Anki. 4. "You have to both memorize and read to understand the context and connections behind it all." No, it is the opposite. You have to understand first and then memorize later. You need the context in order to memorize. It is not possible to memorize without a context. Memory works by association, you need to associate words with something else in order to memorize them. Anki takes the words out of context, it is much harder to understand and memorize. For example consider the sentence "Jag skrev en bok" (I wrote a book). It is much easier to memorize the ENTIRE sentence than the individual words. The context gives you important clues about the meaning and function of each words. Even when you don't know some words, just by looking at the context you can guess the meaning of the unknown words. It is much easier to study and memorize when words are in context. 5. "making 1000+ is easy in a few hours of hard work" A FEW HOURS?? That is exactly my point! How many pages of a book can you read in a few hours? Reading is much more efficient and easier than making flashcards. 6. "If flashcards don't work for you" I am not saying flashcards don't work. I am saying that flashcards are highly inefficient compared to just reading. I believe you could study much faster and easier without flashcards.

@@hcm9999 Active recall has been demonstrated in the evidence to be very effective and superior to reading and highlighting notes in terms of memorising information (and also spaced repetition). This video was based on medical school, which has key concepts which you need to understand but also lots of little facts which we just kind of need to know verbatim to pass exams. I’m not sure how different your degree is/if it is more concept based. Reading is good to get an understanding of the concepts first, flashcards are more to check you remember all the points you need to score marks in exams to pass. I don’t know about you but I don’t have a memory photographic enough to read greys anatomy and just remember all of it. Reading about the kidney is not necessarily as efficient as compartmentalising all of the information into flashcards (e.g. surface anatomy landmarks, blood supply, drainage, lymphatics and so on). www.osmosis.org/blog/2022/02/21/active-recall-the-most-effective-highyield-learning-technique
