I came back to resume my copywriting journey. I'll go through it at a nice steady pace.

This morning I noticed a comment by a direct response marketer that, in my opinion, really sums up the situation copywriters face. It's only partly the copy: mostly it's the offer ("make them an offer that's so good, you could write weak copy on a shaved dead rat and people would STILL be trying to swipe their card in it's arse cheeks").

Im new to copywriting, can i get any suggestions where to start? Should i buy a course or use free resources?

Use free resources. You don't want to buy a course and then, 3 months in, realize this isn't what you want to do.

@@CopyThat yeah sounds right. I have another question, as I'm in college, how much time should I take out for copywriting? I can take out 2-3 hours daily, is that good enough?

I am not English native speaker , and I think it's must in this. Is there anyway we learn and earn from copywriting without sales calls?

Goodmorning ladies and gentlemen. I had a quick question? Can copywriting come into play with people who run electrical or security company’s? If yes how so? Bit of an odd question but I’m curious what you think of it. Thank you guys. Have a good day today

Yes, absolutely! These are my favorite types of businesses to write for. They need webpages, landing pages, info pages, brochures, ppc ads, seo articles, the works! One of my best paying clients when I (Sean) still did freelance work was for a house painter. Service businesses are great to write for because most have terrible copy that can be improved considerably!

@@CopyThat that’s really good to know. Thanks for the info. I was asking because right now I work for a private security who I’m very close with the CEO. Also have a friend who is an electrician looking to start up a business in the near future so I’m definitely looking forward to learning as much about writing copy and working with these guys.

@@TaxationIsTheft439 Dude, you're in the catbird seat. That's a massive opportunity and you're going to crush it if you just stick to the basics of persuasion and make their copy just a little bit more enticing than competitors'. Good luck!

@@CopyThat also Sean, you said “when I still did freelance work”. How come you don’t do freelance anymore ? Are you signed with a salary contract or what made you take that route? Sorry if that’s too personal of a question. Just curious.

I mainly write for my own businesses, companies I help manage, or affiliates. I was taking on 1 freelance project per year for a while just to stay "in the game, " But I got too busy. I do have a call with a potential fitness client in early January. I've always wanted to write for fitness, so this would be a new and fun challenge for me, which is why I am considering it.

The first lens to look through is that all sales & marketing is communication about a specific offering, leading itself to the prospect/lead making a decision for themselves, whether that offering will lead them further along their journey or not. As the marketer/sales person -- you are leading that person to making a better decision for themselves. 1. Learn the FUNDAMENTALS OF BUSINESS ANALYSIS (end deliverable being the business case; business cases summarize the background, the objective, the problem, the requirements & needs, the potential solutions, the cost/benefit trade offs, & the recommendation). You'll learn why this is so fundamental later. 2. Learn the fundamentals of PROJECT MANAGEMENT (you're selling someone on a product, plan, or transformation -- what's included & how will it work?). You'll not only know how to package together the solution, but you'll give yourself clarity on how to build out the solution AND get clarity for yourself to ACTUALLY deliver (which most marketers don't do). 3. Learn about the AWARENESS LEVELS & how these play into communicating about the business case. 4. Learn about 'STEPS TO AN AGREEMENT'. At the end of the day, we're walking someone towards a decision. All along the way, learning how to frame that end agreement will come from your business analysis, project mgmt, and knowledge about how to make someone "more aware". 5. Learn NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) to help you plant the correct vernacular & how to use framing words to help someone achieve their stated goal. 6. Learn the STRUCTURE OF SALES LETTERS -- after learning the steps above, you'll realize that you've already learned all the elements on how to effectively communicate about the background (lead), the problem (consumer problem), the objective (opportunity), the mechanism (the solution), the product you're offering (the features), the cost/benefits (benefits), and NLP (persona specific language & urgency). Not only will you become a good copywriter, but you'll also understand exactly how to solve business problems as well.
