For less than two years you’re progressing really well. Biggest thing you’ll realize watching these clips is the difference in speed and angle from paddle stroke #1 to popup. Learn to paddle hard enough to get your board on plane (enough to cobra and continue along the face) and standing up correctly gets a lot easier. Arm position, eyes and head, and weight distribution/ knee position are huge factors to speed generation on takeoff. Keep watching the pros next to your own clips and it’ll all click with enough time in the water. I personally think about late drops as letting the board fall away from you while your legs rotate underneath you to meet it. Works even in the sketchiest small fast paced beachbreaks when thinking is a luxury.

Nice vid Pat. I wouldn’t worry about getting your back foot right to the back of the board on take off as Steph doesn’t do that here either. When she goes for a tight turn she moves it back either just before the bottom turn or just after the bottom turn. Doing this will give you more speed into turns.

A couple of things to help improving your take-off, when you paddle and feel the board catching the wave ,correct in arching your. Back to things that does ,it helps transfering the your weight from the front of the board to catch the wave making it easy to catch the wave ,its important once you popped up not to hold the rails ,there shouldn't be any any holding on to the rails once you popped up unless your setting up for a barrel, in regards to your bottom turns it's just transferring your weight, it's easier to improve bottom turns on your backhand because when you do a re-entry as you hit the lip your naturally repositioning down the line

Hey dude, hope my teaching helps, your pop ups are fine, you need to angle your board more. ATM you’re popping up mid face of the wave as you’re going down, you need to glide to the side. Look at rob machado and how angled he is! You will need to increase your paddle speed or the best way is to actually go up in a couple more litres. Foam is your friend trust! The hips above your shoulders is normal when you’re falling forwards, when you’re to the side it will lessen but of course your legs are longer than your arms so positioning will mitigate this. Hope this helps bud, well done and keep going 🤠

Thanks brotha, will check out Rob Machado and I think you're right with the board. I took out my step up (33L compared to 30L) and everything felt easier haha

You are doing great for only a year and a half into surfing. If you permit me I would like to point out a couple of things just to help you in the process. I saw two things: first see how she paddles calm and clean (not strong, just with clean movements), but you paddle making a lot of spray, you actually aren't paddleing efficiently. The second thing is that from my point of view because of your paddleing you end up poping up too late = too down on the face of the wave. See how she pops up smoothly on top of the wave. I think you need to focus on finding the feeling of when the board takes off, without rushing that much. See her at 1.46 and compare it with yourslef at 5.21
@radiokaput9 күн бұрын
It is better to look for the best positioning in the peak of the wave than trying to paddle into it like rushing. If you focus on mastering that you will see that many times just a stroke or two are enough to feel the take off of the board, then you can do the cobra position for half a second and then pop up on the best place, up on the face

@ yes dude thanks for the input. Definitely good advice. Improving Positioning on the wave and paddle efficiency are things I see all the time teaching surf to beginners 👍

getting lost in the details...she takes off mid height of the curl, you take off at the top. her nose is still just an inch above the water when she starts to stand. you nose is 10 inches above the water. standing up is the easy part. hope it helps.

Most of us had the benefit of starting at 5yrs old and didn't think of this stuff, just time in the water and watched surfing videos tapes till they snapped. Visualisation was a massive part of my surfing, lay awake thinking about what I wanted to do on a wave the next day. Pick a turn that you like doing and try it over and over till you perfect it. Then onto the next. Your going pretty good for 1 1/2yrs so relax and always enjoy it, long process brother. Hot tip, never come in on a wave you're not happy with 👍🤘😎

What strikes me is the demands we are putting on spinal mobility! To go from cobra to cat while twisting to the side ...im always going out there "cold" after 30 minutes sitting in the car. No wonder I am stiff and klunky. I need to pay more attention to this.

nice clip and analysis - I've been surfing for years but still mess my knee placement up on takeoff - I know how to fix it (twist my front foot inwards on pop up) but still sometimes forget. Film is such a great way to learn 👍👍 ps where were you surfing in these clips? looks nice and fun

Your understanding of the pop up motion is wrong: your back will always arch up to a certain degree the moment you bring your knees under your chest as biomechanically it's a result of your hips rotation in conjunction of your abs contracting. The reason why certain surfers can stay "straighter" than others is just because they either have longer arms or better mobility from hips downwards. A good way to improve it is just improve your ability to perform a deep squat. Moving afterwards, at 4:53 you talk about how you wanted to setup a bottom turn, but considering how you ride right now you don't have the skill level to do so. Instead, you should focus more on getting right your weight distribution, as after the popup your weight is shifted too much to the tail of the board, while you want to keep your weight slightly forward when dropping down to increase speed and gradually transition it to a 50/50 or 60/40 distribution when entering the bottom turn. Even on the top turn, your weight is on your back leg only for the time required to snap the board, and you want to quickly transition back to your front leg as bouncing out of the lip. When doing a cutback, your weight moves slightly to the back leg only when bouncing back from the foam, so even on your top turn you want your weight to stay relatively centred. Training on land helps understanding the timing and how you should move. On the backside is even more evident when you attempt to turn the board, since you just throw your arms around, but that's not how a turn is performed. The arms lead the movement, but the turn happens because of the torque of your torso and the compression in your legs. You're doing none of these. Also, get into the habit of holding longer and more gentle turns, rather than trying to be "explosive". Learn to draw lines using your rails instead of keeping your board flat, and your surfing will grow exponentially. Highly suggest looking to Attembrah tutorials for bottom turns and snaps. Other people you can watch are Noel Salas (Surf'n Show) or Martin Dunn (esurfr.com, really good material). Wish you luck and keep it up!

I found popups were very easy to master by practising them at home in the mirror. I had solid technique before i even entered the water. Then all I had to do in the water was practise getting into a better wave position. Don't know how your getting super clean waves with no crowd like that. Jealous
@Pat_Moriarty_Surf9 күн бұрын
Nice man. It's definitely good to practice on land, build muscle memory, to make things easier in the water. Some of my next videos will be surf-related workouts you can do to simulate surf movements.
@Canaryisland15 күн бұрын
One thing that helped me a lot was that instead of thinking “bring front foot under my chest,” I thought of “twisting my lower body/legs.” I practiced this on land in super slow motion. As I begin planting my hands on floor to begin a pop up motion, I immediately start twisting from the waist down, bringing a bottom leg (your front leg) closer to a chest inch by inch. I practiced this in super slow motion at home, making sure that both legs land in a straight line without disturbing a board, eh.. a floor 😁
