"Never Knew Love Like This Before" is a 1980 song written and produced by songwriters James Mtume and Reggie Lucas for American R&B recording artist Stephanie Mills' fourth studio album Sweet Sensation (1980). According to Lucas' wife, Kay, the song was inspired by the birth of their baby daughter, Lisa.[1]
The song became Mills' biggest hit on the US Billboard Pop Singles Chart, where it peaked at number 6, outperforming her previously highest charting single, "What Cha' Gonna Do with My Lovin'", which peaked at number 22. The single was also successful on the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts, peaking at No. 12 and No. 5, respectively. It was a bigger success in the UK where it peaked at number 4.
The record won Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1981 Grammy Awards, vanquishing competition that included Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, and Minnie Riperton. The song gave the title to the fourth episode of the FX american drama television series Pose, and performed in playback, in the episode final number, by the Candy character portrayed by Angelica Ross.[

I remember this song this first time around and it’s still on my playlist- because it’s such an uplifting song about love! ❤️ Empress, I actually made the Borderline connection right as you said it! Girl, you got such a good ear! 👂✨Those first few notes set the tone of the whole song- just like they do in Borderline. And people wonder what the xylophone is good for! 😂 Stephanie Mills was the tiny diva with a huge voice who quickly rose to A-list pop star status after her breakout debut on Broadway in The Wiz. (Side note: it was Miss Ross, who was 34 years old at the time, who managed to snatch the role of Dorothy in the 1978 movie version with Michael Jackson.) Never Knew Love Like This Before recently took on a HUGE second life when it was introduced to a new generation of fans during an episode of Pose to celebrate Candy’s life. It was absolutely the most perfect song to honor Candy- equally uplifting and heart wrenching- truly an unforgettable TV moment. When a 40 year old pop song can make you cry ugly, you know it’s a keeper! In fact, most Pose fans refer to this song as Candy’s Sweet Refrain. In fact if you google Candy’s Sweet Refrain it brings up Never Knew Love Like This Before. 💯🙌🔥 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoK9mZiFfsalocU

Stephanie has an incredible voice. She was the orginal Dorothy in "The Wiz" on Broadway, and then in the late 70's to 90's she had a great career. Listen to her do "Home" from "The Wiz".

@@TheRealKymiPoo she was still playing Dorothy in the 80s? She was already a well-known R&B singer in the 80s. I thought she played Dorothy in the seventies. She was the original Dorothy.

You have to give her some slack. Lol. Music videos were almost a brand new idea in the 70s. Most artist weren't doing them at all so just having one period put her ahead of the curve. lol

If you get to know Stephanie Mills better, you'll see why there's no guy in the video with her. It's my opinion that she's singing about her savior. There's another song that I absolutely love to listen to, "Deeper Inside Your Love" from the Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin' Stephanie Mills album (1979). The lyrics to that song could easily be made into a gospel song, praising the love of God.

This was an edited version with a false fade out. The song seems long enough but the full version is so good. Stephanie does a lot more ad-libbing during the real fade out. It's so smooth and easy on the ears that it could be twice as long and I wouldn't mind. Also, Diana Ross actually replaced Stephanie Mills for the movie version of The Wiz that Stephanie Mills had done on Broadway. Ross' version of Home from that show supposedly couldn't compare to Mills' version but I'm not familiar with that tune. I think Mills was probably replaced with Diana for the bigger name draw and star presence...Stephanie was a very tiny 4' 9" and must have looked really small next to any co-stars.

Someone needs to do a mashup of this song and Borderline. I'd never pictured Diana doing this song but you changed that for me Empress. This was an edited version of the song 😕. You need to have the full version on your playlist Empress to really know what a solid 10 this song is.

She has such a distinct voice. A powerful force to be reckoned with. She & Micheal Jackson dated. I recall when she said he was a good kisser. I wish she had gotten the part of Dorothy in the Wiz but then Diana told Gordy who she was dating that she wanted that part. Stephanie was out & Diana was in. smh

A lot of "music videos" in the good old days were really more like filmed pieces, often with outdoor scenes, for TV specials (like with Olivia Newton-John and John Denver). Some artists like Queen and David Bowie were a little more creative in their promo videos, but most "music videos" like this one from 1980, came before the 1981 launch of MTV. And even after that, until Michael Jackson and Duran Duran started to get really creative in filming their videos, most early MTV videos were pretty simple affairs with cheesy special effects/graphics and lighting (like 1982's "Mickey" by Toni Basil or 1978's "Lights" by Journey :-) ).
