It makes me so angry that her, Evelyn Champagne King and Stacy Lattisaw couldn't get on American Top 40 Radio. I often wonder how Cherelle felt when Robert Palmer's Version of "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" was a bigger version than hers. Also in the UK a lot of Boy Band/Girl Group Icons cover obscure R & B Songs like Everybody Dance, and Chain Reaction. Nile Rogers is all but forgotten in The US but in England, he's a Legend working with David Bowie and Duran Duran after Andy Taylor & Roger Taylor left. Even now his music is synonymous. They played "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross when Two Characters on The UK Soap Opera Coronation Street David & Shona got married. We are Family was played on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002 during the Live Shows and Girls Aloud who were created would sing Le Freak in Concert, and none of them were even born.

Although radio stations respond to public support, they're also influenced by sponsorship. One in particular I knew of was a jazz radio station. From their inception, they played traditional jazz exclusively and developed a solid following which supported them through public donations. But after some time it proved to be not enough. That considerably older generation, as uncomfortable as it is, was dying off literally and figuratively. So they had to add a blues format to attract a larger audience. The pressed on in light of those dilemmas and survived. But they eventually ran into the same kind of road block because, inevitably, newer gens will dominate the audiences. Jazz and blues were still not enough to keep the ship afloat, so they accepted sponsors with heavy hip/hop-rap leanings. These genres alone would not satisfy the audience already listening and supporting, so they had to fuse these musical styles together to make it work. I realize what you're saying, there were/are stations that were not/are not "sensitive" to the musical desires of certain radio listeners. So where sponsorships are concerned, in time there will be alternatives or compromises.

@laminage: That's mainly because in America everything, particularly from the Disco era, is transient. People soon forget what was on the charts yesterday. That's why Tina Turner and many other american artists, specially from a certain age, have found a safe haven elsewhere in the world.

They did not make a mistake. Phyllis wrote and performed another version of this song for the movie "Parent Trap II." However, I believe Stephanie's version was the only one that was released nationwide.

a snippet of this song was played in the movie "The Parent Trap II" with Haley Mills and Tom Skerritt, in the scene where Sharon was workin' out when she got the collect call from her niece. The end credits said "Stand Back" was by Phyllis St. James. But somehow I think they made a mistake. Unless Phyllis St. James came out with a version of this same song.
