kinda guilty but to my defence: the Rulebook (or some adventures i don't know which) of the German RPG "The Dark Eye" specically said that you "kinda have to fudge some rolls to make it more dramatic or don't kill a player immediatly") and ... when i started i ALWAYS had to play as by the rules because... well there were rules!!! (yeah the German stereotype)

All the time! RPG's are about the overall story right, even if the 'story' is the combat. The best stories have highs, lows, and miraculous moments.

I totally fudge rolls too... even when running Shadowdark for kids (lol). BTW, I thought you the other day, Dan: I played music at a happy hour at a retirement home. When I was setting up to play music, I could hear them playing bingo in the next room, and to my disappointment, they did not do any fancy sayings to go with the number :-( So you keep up the good fight! ;-)

😂 You guys look my adorable players who spent weeks crafting really cool PCs straight in the eyes as you murder them due to bad rolls! I don’t pull punches when I run things like Shadowdark and Mothership - but PC death feels like it should MEAN something in D&D

Love this channel and really looking forward to getting into dnd. I took part in a session zero with some friends back in November but since then the DM hasn't engaged. Any advice for getting them back on board?

Make a phone list and see how interested they all are Ask the DM how is prep going too

My advice is call him out on it - ideally in a public place. Wait till he’s engaged in some kind of social occasion then turn up and scream and shout at him. He’ll soon buck up his ideas. Weddings are perfect occasions for confrontations, especially if the person is bride or groom.

Fudging Dice is a no-no. Also my wife knows everything I know and vise versa one flesh and all.
