I have a little Bo Peep dress VERY like the one at 1 minute. BUT it's older. I wore it when I was 4-6 so no later than '82. Mine is lavender and white with rows of eyelet ruffles on the pantaloons! And I still have it, as I cherished the heck out of it and eventually I am going to get a child-sized doll to creep people out and wear my most beloved outfit of all time. (I wore it to school pretty often and paid no mind to the haters) I never wore it for Halloween as we didn't celebrate then. (I'm ALL about it now and have made myself many ridiculous costumes)

I remember some of my early 2000s Halloween costumes, main ones being a lady bug costume and a spider costume. That lady bug one I also wore **every** time dad and I went to home depot. Was it Halloween? No. Was it October? Probably not. Did I wear it anyway and not care? Yes. I also remember getting a store bought Cinderella dress one year (I think it was the only store bought one that fit that I tolerated?) and the next year turning it into Zelda from Ocarina of Time

Last year, a boy came to the door in a patriot/minuteman costume straight out of 1976 (including tricorn!). I know because my mom made my brother that costume for the Bicentennial. I'm guessing the boy was wearing his dad's (maybe grandpa's?) old costume. It looked vintage.

My mom totally made our costumes and as the youngest of three daughters I rarely got a new one.... we just dug into the Halloween box - there was clown stuff, witch stuff and I think raggedy ann? I do recall wanting to be a pumpkin and bless her heart she tried, but I think I wound up being a carrot. My greatest remembrance though was being cleopatra - we made an awesome yarn wig and I had a long loose tunic dress that we decorated a jeweled collar onto (the old fashioned way, with sharpies sequins and regular glue) Sadly we lived in Alaska, so I most definitely had to wear a coat over it. I was bereft....

Unexpected sadness. I too wore the Rainbow Brite costume...and I will likely never get to see any photos of it as I had to go no contact from my abusive "family". Healthiest decision, however it happened unexpectedly and I wasn't able to get my photos/awards/etc beforehand. Wasn't expecting to have to process this all again when I clicked in this video...

My mom made my costumes until I started making them myself, when I was about two I was a bunny with diapers (clean!) stuffed in the ears, when I was three I was a sunflower, complete with a green jumpsuit I wore to kindergarten...when I was about six I was a pretty pink princess and the pink dress was my new nightie... Now I kinda want to ask my mom how many of these she remembers, she's the one who told me about the diapers so I'm sure she remembers that one but I wonder if she's forgotten the rest... as an adult I made myself the Quiet Riot Metal Health mask for a halloween party and I still dress up as Alice Cooper or The Crow as the mood strikes me cause all those clothes still fit, but last year I was lazy and andwered the door wearing a sweatshirt and yoga pants that didn't match (normal for me) plus a sign around my neck, "responsible adult". All the parents who were with the kids laughed...

I know my late mother and the nanny (five kids - the nanny was cheaper than daycare) both did several costumes, but I can only remember the ubiquitous cat, made without an actual costume, but definite use of at least one pair of mum’s old tights and ears from a cereal packet. In later years, I took on making costumes for me and the rest of the family (in my 30s), which have included an outlander costume - using 18th century patterns - a dementor, Kylo Ren (I macgyvered a pattern for the nephew both times), Alice in Wonderland - using a basic child’s dress and making the apron up, but for me I have mainly curated costumes, though the last one I made was, again, macgyvered from various patterns and 18th century items and went as Mary Sanderson from Hocus Pocus. I regard my finest hour as the Maleficent cloak for my adult sister, half animated, half live action film it was based on, no pattern

i loved the She-Ra character Catra, and one year mom bought me the plastic costume she added a real skirt, boot covers, and gloves she wore a distinctive mask, but the costume came with both the mask and the face below it, so Mom trimmed the bottom down so i had her real mask, kid that made sense - like getting a Batman mask and it has his chin in the mask instead of just the mask

That buzz off costume was indeed store bought. It was one of those plastic coveralls with plastic mask with a small slit that we couldn't breath from. I know, I'm that old and had probably more than 1 of those types of costumes over the years. I only have 1 picture of me in a Halloween costume, circa '77 when I was dressed as Buggs Bunny. I don't remember any other pictures being taken over the years. Not that I dressed up often. I did go as Smurfette one year and Princess Lea another year. for Princess Lea I simply borrowed an Angel costume from church for the dress. My sister made my Smurfette outfit but I don't remember my hair exactly. I want to say my sister used a blond/yellow hair color spray on my hair. In 94, I think, I dressed up as Troi from STTNG for work. My mom made my costumes as I didn't have the patience to sew back then but my mom and sister did. I was working at K-Mart and bought a tricorder and phaser from there some time before Halloween. It was fun. I didn't have a chance to dress up for Halloween (at work) until a few years later. I went as Morticia, I found a dress almost identical to hers, on amazon, bought some black organza and cut it into pieces to pin on (I didn't want to sew them on so I could wear the dress another time), I bought a horribly hot, cheap black wig (since I've been dying my naturally dark brown hair, a warm medium brown color for years, and because I have silver, gray and white hair mixed in, now) and even made a Cousin It. The people my age and older knew who I was and who Cousin It was, the 20s somethings had no clue. 😂 I do have a picture of that costume with Cousin It (whom I left at work as sort of our room's mascot).

OMG my mother LITERALLY made me that SAME mermaid costume! From the same pattern! Shame I don’t still have the pattern. I really wanted it, too because… Ariel. She also made me a unicorn one year out of purple satin (ish?) and pink tulle. It was my favorite. It was a jumpsuit thin that you could not go potty wearing but… I WAS A MAGICAL CREATURE DAMMIT That shade from your mom was just … perfect. Mom goals. The harlequin clown was quite popular in the 80s/90s. I did go as a clown in 91 (if you are a Minnesotan- yes the blizzard and yes I absolutely trick-or-treated and my clown face was a MeSs). That was a costume I made beck also was trying the clowning project in 4-h (yes that was a thing) and it doubled as my project that year. I was 10. It was a time.

I started laughing the instant I saw your "vintage" costume, because I too had a little mermaid costume mom-made from that very same pattern, around that same year as well! (In fact, I'm certain the pattern is still in a box in her sewing room to this day.) She wisely decided to modify it slightly, detaching the skirt from the top and putting the shells on some elastic so they could be worn over a shirt that she didn't have to sew herself. The shell bra and fin skirt (made of a shiny swimsuit material, fortunately not itchy) stayed in my dress up box for years afterwards.

Okay, I should've watched the whole video before commenting, because I also had a Rainbow Bright costume from that McCall's pattern as well! I actually wore it for three Halloweens in a row, because it was so much work to sew (according to my mother), and she'd made it adjustable so it would still fit me for a while as I grew.

Oh man! My mum made that Little Mermaid costume for me! One I see a lot is a Disney Sleeping Beauty pattern c 1987 or so. It's 200 times better than the current offering. Mum also made my sister and I those pilgrim dresses and then Little House on The Prairie dresses from the last pattern you featured. I was able to sell all the old costumes she made on eBay for a tidy sum. What can I say? Homemade costumes are just better. ^^

Oooh, the Rainbow Brite was great! Tweety reminded me of my Garfield costume (pretty sure it was Simplicity 0619; thanks for the site to search for it!). The feet were like shoes, but only attached to your ankle except for a single elastic strap under each shoe to keep them in place. We reused the head and foot paws to make a graduation version a few years later once I'd grown out of the shirt and pants. I still have those parts, and it's always a jumpscare whenever I find them again.

For the clown costume there's also McCall's 2211 copyright 1986, and Simplicity 7162 copyright 1975. That last one my mother used to make complementary ones for my sister and I when we were little; my sister was in blue with a yellow ruffled collar, and I was in yellow with a blue ruffled collar, although it might have been the other way round too. Sorry, but I don't have any pictures of us in them.

For the girl in the blue dance dress, another option would be Simplicity 6204 copyright 1965.
you think 90's store bought costumes were bad ?... i'm a lil older .. and when i was very little, a halloween costume from the store typically consisted of a plastic thing.. like a plastic hospital johnny but with a design printed on .. I had a strawberry shortcake one, so it was a plastic printed johnny of her dress and all .. and then they came with hard plastic masks with eye holes and a small mouth hole.. held on by an elastic strap across the back ...they would get sweaty and especially the mask .. they were just gross.. but it still felt fun being a kid and dressing up. oh how nice it was when I got to wear real costumes. I'm with you on the coat over costume thing .. as a kid I would have rather risked pneumonia..lol Sometimes Mom could fit the plastic johnny costumes over my coat or snow suit, other times I'd get turtlenecks, long johns and stuff under a costume and then maybe even a coat on still.

Thank goodness there in no picture to prove this but my mom made a costume for me once that she covered in aluminum foil. Think of the tin man but much more wrinkled. I hated it. I went a few houses down the street and came running back home because the foil was ripping away from the cheaply made pants and shirt she had covered with foil. Things on the back side began to be exposed. It was quickly becoming an inappropriate costume for anyone to wear.

My mom made a “hobo clown” costume for my brother back in about 1974. The picture is priceless, because my brother (who my parents always photographed when he was either mad or crying) is in the middle of a really big cry. Either they wouldn’t let him eat his candy, or he was mad that he couldn’t keep trick or treating. Either way, he was a VERY sad clown! 😂 Edit: mom and dad would let us have candy, but not at bedtime. They weren’t letting him trick or treat and then not letting him have the candy at all! Lol
