How to Apply Estee Lauder Double Wear WITHOUT Looking Cakey!
Estee Lauder Double Wear has been one of my favorite foundations for my combination / oily skin for a long long time. It's tricky to know how to apply full coverage foundation without looking cakey or heavy. You can get really nice medium to full coverage...even light/medium coverage with it....as long as you apply it the right way. I've been asked several times how I apply it to get the nice finish I'm able to achieve with ELDW. It's really not hard! Once you know what to do, it's quick and easy! To get a stunning finish from Doublewear; 1. Put your normal amount of ELDW on the back of your hand 2. Mix in 2 drops of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair 3. Apply on your face using the EL Powder Foundation brush- or a similar full headed powder foundation brush/ kabuki brush 4. Finish with a barely damp sponge to remove any excess product- this will give a medium coverage, but radiant finish that lasts all day! 😊 I used to be a Beauty Advisor for EL and we used to demo this all of the time! 🥰🥰💋

Hi Dawn, Thanks for chiming in! Since ANR is $72 for 1 oz and adds to the cost of the foundation, maybe an alternative that users may own already could be suggested? I've heard of dry skinned people mixing in a couple of drops of oil, but using a serum is an interesting idea. Do you feel either would work well with ELDW? :)

Stephanie Marie Hey Stephanie, yes the cost of ANR does make it an expensive tip! Any serum that gives a radiant finish would work, but as ELDW is oil free, it does make it counter productive to use an oil, so a serum would probably be more cohesive with the foundation? Xx

Hi i am a registered nurse and have worn double wear for twenty five years and working in intensive care i don’t have time to touch up my makeup during my shift , so i learnt very early to use a good foundation since i use estee lauder skin care i just bought double wear and its perfection for my working day , my skin always looks flawless and even under a mask my foundation never moves its perfect ! i can firmly recommend this foundation its a lovely product .

I don't think beauty chemists and formulators recommend a dropper. It introduces product that has been more oxidized back into the bottle (the severity of oxidation differs between products and formulations). That being said, I don't use pumps myself. I hate the way they can clog. I've tried the dropper trick a few years back when traveling with an empty sample size Caudalie bottle and it was just a mess.

@@hua7222 What method do you use to remove product from the bottle? I see your point about oxidation, but as soon as the product is open & exposed to air, it will begin to oxidize anyway. I figure this way is at least more sanitary without wasting a lot of product. Also, I have traveled with this & had no problems with leaking personally. However, I'm always open to new tricks!

Okay, here is my beauty trick for women with mature skin. I am 62 with combo skin, and oily in the T-Zone. I have huge pores, acne scars (ice-pick scars and pits) and fine lines. I use the traditional Smashbox Primer because it is clear and silicone-like and fills in the pits and pores. Also, because the primer is clear, it does not give me "polka-dot" pores. I add a drop of Paula's Choice Beauty Oil to the foundation and then I apply the foundation with my fingers, massaging it into my skin so that it melts into my pores and pits (instead of skipping over them making them more apparent). After that, I go over my face with a beauty sponge to even it out and pick up any excess foundation. I need to go heavy on the foundation due to my scars, but the oil helps it look radiant and natural. It gives a beautiful finish that looks healthy and plump with just the right amount of radiance. The oil does not affect the wear time nor does it cause the foundation to break up. Even with the oil, the foundation stays put and I don't get oily later in the day. However, I do set it with powder. I use the beauty sponge to press the powder into my skin. This further hides my pores and imperfections. After that, I apply a generous amount of moisturizing setting spray so that the powder melts into my skin. The best moisture spray to use is the Timeless Hyaluronic Acid Matrixyl 3000 Cucumber Spray. I spray on enough to saturate my face, and then I put a fan on until it is dry. The results are AMAZING!!! My skin looks flawless, healthy, plump, radiant (not shiny or oily) it lasts all day.

Have you tried the Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer? That stuff fills in pits like no other. It is truly incredible how it fills in deep-set piercing scares or old acne pits and pores. Plus it is clear!

Tips as a representative consultant for Estee Lauder you can also add a few drops of Advanced Night Repair to the DW to give a more dewy hydrated finish, mix 1-2 drops with the foundation. 😊🌷

This has been my holy grail foundation for over 20 years!~ I am 52 and it still gets me! I love watching anyone use this, it is by far the absolute best foundation I have ever tried and I have tried alot!I have normal to slightly dry skin. It can look cakey but it's all about face prep, drinking lots of water and vitamins. When my face does look cakey for whatever reason I have noticed that within an hour of application it settles down and smooths itself out.Thanks for the great video!

I once did like 50 people’s faces in a day with this foundation while working for Estee. It really works for everyone. The official direction for dry skin is to add a drop of ANR, which to my surprise actually works better than oil. I also tried adding a drop of Rose all Day by physicians formula, and got a very pretty luminous finish😆. But I guess if you can’t or don’t know how to hydrate your skin it might actually not work for you, I have very oily skin I will not use a mattifying primer with this. It looks best when I do hydrating toner/serum, moisturizer and a non drying sunscreen.

I think you'll have to try the combo out yourself to see what works for you. Generally sunscreens made in Asia are less oily than western sunscreens. After applying sunscreen, wait a few minutes for it to be absorb. Then use one ply of tissue to gently blot off any excess oil. To blur my pores I prefer Cover FX's blurring primer more than Tarte's .

I've always used a damp sponge with this foundation and think it is by far the best way to apply it. It looks so much more natural that way. So glad to see I'm not the only one who does it that way. Been using this foundation for over 15 years and I absolutely love it!

This is my favorite foundation and I have pretty dry skin. These tips are spot on. I do sometimes apply with a brush, but I always go over it with a damp sponge. You're 100% right...a damp sponge is a must with this. I don't even need powder to set.

I enjoy watching makeup vlogs and become interested in other foundations but the more I research the newest and latest, I confirm EL is the best for me. THANK YOU I kept hearing amazing things about this foundation but it never looked good when I applied it with fingers or kabuki brush. It settled into my pores and looked cakey. Using the moist beauty sponge made a world of difference! I use sunscreen as a base / primer, apply ELDW (I'm also "Dawn), and then L'oreal Lumi Glotion to get that perfect dewy, glowy look. Yay, success!

I believe that skin prep prior to application of this foundation is key as well as using very little product... This is my holy grail foundation and even though I dabble in other foundations for a time (currently loving Jouer) I always come back to this one... I even mixed the two foundations and it was a great little concoction! ❤

I am the exact same shade, 2W1 Dawn. I mix this foundation with Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation in Vanilla 52 (beige) and it gives the most beautiful finish!!! 😍😍 Satin, not cakey, it almost looks like perfectly air brushed skin. One pump Estee Lauder, 1 pump bourjois. I mix them and apply with a real technique dampened sponge. It lasts beautiful up to 10-12 hours. I have very oily skin by the way.

This is my go to foundation when I need extra coverage. I’m going in 61 soon but it still work for my skin. I hv oily T-zone & dry towards the parameter of my face. I normally apply thinly on my well prep skin.. tho everything’s less is more for my textured skin..but it works wonders. Love from Malaysia 😍

You are the person that clued me in to ELDW. Hands down, the BEST foundation for 13+ hour bedside medical-surgical nursing or for any long day social events on my oily skin. Anytime I don't follow this application process/rush application/use too much product, I will look cakey 1/2 way through my day. I have also found I can mix 50/50 with Lancôme teint idole long wear to adjust color, or to get a less velvet finish.

Great tips. This is my HG but I'm on a budget. So when I'm using a drug store or even the Armani Luminous Silk (my other HG) I can extend the life of my ELDW by mixing it with other products. I have a few drug store foundations that I love for the day to day or even going to work, but they won't last past lunch. If I add a squirt of the ELDW it bumps up the coverage of the other foundation and will make it wear longer. In the end it saves me a lot of money and time. A bottle of ELDW will last longer and I'm only replacing it a few times a year at $43 and replacing the $15 or less foundations more often. This also helps sheer out the EL for those days I don't need a solid medium or full coverage foundation. It's a workhorse that delivers on it's promises. Won't be without it ever.

My skin has gotten dryer so to make Double Wear work I have to prep my skin well and then prime my skin with a moisturizing primer. ELDW mixes beautifully with CYO Lifeproof, Armani Luminous Silk, but my favorite combo with the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer. Stunning!

I mix one part foundation to two parts moisturisers on the palm of my hand and apply with my finger tips. It gives me an even cover and lasts as long as using the foundation on it's own, and not quite so heavy. The added bonus is that it makes the foundation last so much longer :)

This is the one foundation I travel with ANY PLACE in the world and for ANY SEASON. In humid, sunny, tropical weather, I apply moisturizer and sunscreen and let them sink in. Then, I mix the ELDW with a bit more sunscreen and dot it all over my face. I blend with fingers--the warmth of my fingers, plus the slip of the sunscreen, helps it spread beautifully, so I end up with the natural look of a BB or CC cream and the staying power of a waterproof foundation. For dry, wintery conditions, I mix it with a rich moisturizer or a hydrating primer. And for evening occasions when I want full coverage, I apply it with a brush over a silicone primer, let it set, and then very gently "blot" it with a damp sponge to pick up any excess. I finish with a good setting spray. I have many other foundations, and I don't use this one every day, but if I were to label one of them as my Holy Grail, this "magic" one would be it, simply because it works for any situation and condition. I even have a small refillable bottle marked "ELDW" that lives in my travel makeup bag, so I can decant a bit of it when I pack!

PS--I also "cocktail" it with foundations that don't have enough staying power, or ones that I find too glowy (e.g. Flower Beauty Light Illusion, L'Oreal Pro-Glow), with tinted moisturizers that are too slippery, with foundations that are a little off in undertone...Double Wear is the chameleon of foundations.

Now I will definitely try it again with a sponge following your instructions and maybe add a bit of oil too as suggested, because my skin although still combination is starting to feel quite drier with the years (37 now).

I actually got this to work well with an It cosmetics mineral powder brush(like right?) And spraying the brush with Mario basescu spray. It sheared it out a little and blended nicely A sponge more simple for sure though.

Jill Smith I like it bc it lasts all day and isn’t drying on my skin. I use it for special events such as a wedding. I use a good moisturizer, though, since I have normal to dry skin. When combined with the Pro Glow it just gives your skin a more luminous and radiant finish, in my opinion.

I am also loyal to DW. As I have aged, I noticed that my sunscreen under the foundation helps make it more glowy, which is nice. A light hand and a damp sponge do make all the difference. Great video!

I love this foundation. For me a brush is a huge no no, I am not that keen on its application with a sponge. For me (& I'm probably on my own with this) it applies best on me when I apply it with fingers. I think people find it very cakey as they are applying far too much. I'm 45, I have dry skin with age lines and this is the 1 foundation I come back to time and time again. I discovered it when doing my 1st degree in my early 20's and hve adored it ever since

Are battling with some melasma and use ELDW mixed with 2 to 3 drops MAC face and body. It allows me to build up to natural looking full coverage without the foundation lifting off. And I don't wear a primer even though I have oily combo skin. Hope this could help some melasma sufferers 💓 Love your updated tutorial Steph!xxx

I tried it with Revolution baking oil underneath as a primer WOW it looked stunning…glowy but not greasy and stayed in place very well. I’m glad I persevered.

I've used Double Wear since it was introduced and and its one of the most versatile foundations on the market. The damp sponge technique works great but I also use a brush and blend with a damp sponge and can achieve a similar result. EL Advanced Night Repair serum works great to sheer the foundation out, don't be afraid to ask for a sample to try if you are purchasing from the E L counter. The double wear powder foundation is a good setting powder IF you want a full full coverage look. Highly recommend the EL loose powder with this foundation. I've tried others (Huda, One Size, Hourglass, etc.) but nothing gives the airbrushed look like the two EL products working together.

The more I try different foundations, the more I appreciate ELDW! It is definitely my most used foundation and like you, have figured out the best way to apply it for my skin - light layers. After figuring out the best method, it turns out I use much less today compared to when I first started using it. I can also experiment with many more looks using this foundation (like highlighted and glowy skin) because my oil doesn’t break through and blush doesn’t oxidize as much. xoxo 🥰

I prefer working quickly in small areas with a very small amount and a dry sponge. I find the finish with a damp sponge on my own skin is too dewy. (I do at least three steps of skincare before applying and often skip primer.) I used to wear Dawn (2W1?) but then I started taking walks (with sunscreen I swear) and now I'm Buff 2N2. Been using DW for at least 9 years now.

A good friend recommended Esteelauder Doubleware. It was a disaster the first time I tried to apply it. I saw your first application video. Afterwards this foundation became my holy grail. It has such a beautiful satin finish. I have dry to combo skin and it works amazing for me. A great dupe for it is CYO foundation. The CYO however works much better with a brush.

Hi I used double wear for about twenty years it’s bomb proof but I started to add a drop of night repair before changing to perfectionist youth infusing foundation which has a serum already in it , being mature it’s beautiful but I actually if I have a busy day I will wear double wear as yes it stays put exactly where you put it and perfect with a drop or two of night repair the finish is beautiful, I have always used Estée Lauder in fact I started to use it as a teenager all my skin care and makeup all Estée Lauder , I am brand loyal, it’s nice to see you also enjoying also , regards liz

before I tried this foundation I used beauty blenders with other foundations and I loved the finish. When I tried this foundation, I found that it didn't work for me, I moved to brushes and it took me a while to get that technique on point! Okay, im was ready to throw mine away but after watching your video Im going to give it another go. Now I know why this foundation doesn’t work for me, it’s because I put the foundation directly on my skin. Im going to use your technique. I absolutely love EL Double Wear, I used it for years! It lasted through classes and concerts and you can sweat all you want, it just won’t move. But gradually started to shift to more sheer coverage foundations as I wanted to have more natural glow skin. I also found that to remove it from your pores you need oily products. I have not used glowing primers or mixing it with other foundations. Great tip! Thank you.

I used to have this problem as well. The secret is a good skincare routine. Just dont expect this to look good on you when you have lizard like dry skin, because this foundation is made for oily skin. Once you have your routine figured out, this foundation can do wonders to your confidence. Additional tip: Find the RIGHT shade for you! And know your undertones. It takes research. It took me 3 shades in a span of 5 years before I finally found the right shade of EL Double Wear. Hope this helps!

I suspect that many foundations look better using this kind of application. Focusing on very thin layers has helped me so much. It’s like the trend now to go with a thin layer of concealer under the eyes. Getting away from those huge triangles of concealer under the eyes was maybe a response to the very full coverage concealers like Shape Tape. With full coverage foundations it’s the same principle, I think. You always look so beautiful, Stephanie!! Thanks for these tips.

This is exactly how I've been applying my ELDW but when I first bought it, I asked the advisor how to apply it and she said to always use a brush and never a sponge! How wrong she is! Also I do find it does oxidize a lot, that's my only criticism. Great vid x

I've been using it for more than 15 years. If a foundation oxidizes it's a definite no for me. Check your powder or something you put in your face that oxidizes your foundation. Double Wear definitely does not oxidize. It stays put all day.

I apply it all over with my hands first and then blot with a beauty blender afterwards to even everything out. I have no issues with it drying too fast. Love this foundation, but I love the Light version even more. The concealer with the want is the best concealer I've ever used. Best makeup line and worth every penny!

Don’t forget to ask for a sample of this foundation to try before you buy! This is a new foundation for me so I want to try a couple of shades. The lady at my store tested my skin color using a special meter. When she applied it, we both thought the color was too dark. She gave me 3 nice sized containers of the product so I can test out other colors to see what works for me. I’m so excited since I have seen so many reviews of this product. I also like using a brush to apply this foundation. It works great. Good brushes are alittle pricey but they last so long when cleaned properly after each use and does a beautiful job applying this foundation. I use both the brush and sponge sometimes. The sponge works well around my eyes and on my fore head.

I love your channel 😍 I tried DW this morning for the first time, my skin is very dry and sensitive, but i have also a very oily T zone. I made all the mistakes you tell us to avoid (i applied a lot, with my fingers... so...) - and I ended up with a quite cakey result 🙈 My dry areas didn’t like DW at all, but I wanted it to „work“, so i took my beauty blender and some drops of double wear nude i had got in a sample ... and what can i say: the result is great! My skin feels very comfortable, it is so even and all the redness is gone. I will continue mixing doublewear and doublewear nude, and i will always use the beauty blender. Thank you 😃😘

But when i tried mixing it w/ the ELDW Nude Water Fresh everything change! It's not cakey anymore, super smooth & i love the coverage. It's a bit pricey though but totally worth the money 💞

I have finally found a perfect way to apply DW after having such a hard time and pretty much hating it. Now I have a way to apply it perfectly. -If you used to love DW light and it’s been discontinued try this. Mix original double wear foundation with a drop of serum. (Even oil like argan oil if you have very dry skin , but serum works better for me) It’s suggested by EL beauty advisor to use EL advanced night repair serum but I prefer Lancôme serum. I use the Lancôme ADVANCED GÉNIFIQUE FACE SERUM and I add one drop to a pump of Estee lauder double wear or a drop to one and half pump. That’s my perfect amount and also apply with beauty sponge real techniques. I don’t like the EL serum because I feel it’s irritating and has a comedogenic ingredient Oleth-3 comedogenic rating Of 5. That’s just my preference, pick the serum you like that’s similar consistency. I used to hate the original DW foundation cuz it was so drying in me. Now I love how it looks and it lasts the same power with the serum added (Lancôme or EL serum work perfect)

@@OceanMetTheSky definitely use a serum. I tried with argan oil the other day and it like clumps and separates the foundation into this weird mix. I find this trick works with Lancôme serum or the EL serum ! I hope it works for you. It’s not going to feel exactly like the Light version but Atleast it’s not as drying.
