Through my employer benefits, I was enrolled in a RRSP 20 years ago. As a sidenote. I have recently started adding larger amounts of self contributions to that RRSP, because of my age and my reaching what I hope to be retirement soon.

I lost a lot chasing individual stocks and I feel pretty silly for not understanding how investing works. I have a double major in economics but I’ve been trying to make sense of the market. Well done on profits!

Could you guys make a video about Canadian ETFs that are currency hedged vs unhedged? The pros, cons, and historic returns, and which one you recommend by your research. I think this is an important topic to inform people! And It's quite interesting.

Wonderful beginner's investing guide! It appears that ETF's are indeed the best way for anyone to begin investing for the first time. And for those that decide to pick individual stocks in the future, they can just get started with an ETF for meow and invest there consistently while they do their research/learn more about whichever stock they're interested in. One thing that would be cool to see, is an in depth comparison on some of the most popular Canadian listed ETF's for us to buy, which account is best to hold them in, etc...

I've found that Individual stocks seem better to invest in than an ETF.
@Dor_alien
@Dor_alien 2 ай бұрын
@@JadenHercules this is true, but only if you fully understand the single stocks your investing in. For us that don't, ETF's are way better instead of costly mistakes investing in single stocks you don't understand

Hi Steph & Den! I'm 19 and I've been watching your videos for a while now and I've finally went ahead and opened a TFSA, ready to invest my first $1000. I have some questions if anyone could help me out! 1. Should I buy when the market is open or does it not really matter when I buy? 2. Does the 15% withholding tax only apply to US dividends? 3. Do you think 70% XEQT, 20% VFV, 10% VDY is a good stock arrangement? 4. The closer I get to retirement, should I sell some XEQT and buy more XGRO/XBAL?

You're asking all the right questions at your age. Btw, I'm pretty sure you could invest/buy shares mainly when the market is open, but you can put an order in for when the market reopens the following day (or after the weekend). Imo, don't try to time the market. If you're from Canada, invest in their ETFs you mentioned, but imo I don't think individual stocks are a bad idea! I invest in Enbridge, CIBC, and Manulife. But they're high right now, so look at investing in companies like Cineplex (huge value expectations), Telus, and MDA Science are good picks. Look out for those ones!! Also, Chorus Aviation may be a good one, too. You can put $200 into the company and get about 70 shares and watch it grow, while boosts to the Canadian economy increases (especially during the soccer games). Same goes with Air Canada, it's trading at almost 17 right now. Try buying a few shares over a period of these stocks and I'm sure you'll see growth. Plus, Telus gives you dividends! I LOVE dividends stocks,so my recommendation is always there for them. Good luck!

How do I know whether I have Wealthsimple Trade or Wealthsimple Invest? I'm able to purchase stocks/ETFs myself but I can't seem to find an area on the app that mentions whether I have Trade or Invest :/
@stephandden
@stephandden 2 ай бұрын
They've combined the apps now, so you in theory could have both Wealthsimple Trade and Invest accounts. If you're able to purchase stocks and ETFs yourself, then you're definitely using Wealthsimple Trade. If any of your accounts say 'Managed' under them, then those accounts are being managed via Wealthsimple Invest. Do any of your accounts say 'Managed' right beneath them?

One common objection or question I hear as well from people who are new to investing is “well can’t you lose everything ?”’or “what if it goes to zero ?” It’s important to understand the scope of capital markets. The total market capitalization (value) of the S&P 500 alone is 50 trillion dollars. When you account for the amount of money invested in fixed income securities like the bond and treasury markets as well as global equity markets it’s much, much greater. In essence most of the world’s wealth is tied to capital markets. That includes regular people, corporations & businesses as well as governments. If you invested in a broad market index fund like SPY or VTI and it went to zero money would be the LEAST of your worries. At that point you should be grabbing your pitchfork and scavenging for your next meal.

When you’re starting to approach retirement 😊 The closer you are to retirement, the more you’ll want to reduce the amount of risk you take on, and you’ll want to start introducing fixed income options into your portfolio
