I’m a Mavs fan, but I feel bad for Gobert. Nobody plays perimeter defense on the Jazz (we were cooking Mitchell, Bogdanovic, and even Conley like BBQ) and once they got blown by, Rudy had to retreat to the paint and leave a shooter open. I promise you, it’s not all his fault.

Exactly, the only guys that have been even somewhat effective on the perimeter are Danuel House and Royce O'Neal, and they aren't even elite it's time to blow it up, Gobert is good and can be good in the playoffs but only on certain teams (Lakers?) Bojan was big on the offensive side but he isn't defending and he's getting old, same goes for Conley. I doubt Mitchell will want to stay if they lose in the 1st round. They don't want to become the next trail blazers, holding onto mediocrity and never going anywhere with a star

SAS was actually right though. If they don't try something new they are guaranteed to lose the series and in the last 2 years Gobert has "looked like" the liability on the perimeter. Now JJ knows the game inside out so maybe the responsibility doesn't purely reside with Gobert if you have an indepth understanding of the defence schemes and rotations and it just looks that way to us casuals. Regardless they will lose the series if they don't change something.

Yep, i mean Stephen A is trying to create a scapegoat because he does not want to criticize his crush Donovan Mitchell and the other guards. It´s kinda obvious. What should Gobert do? Utahs backcourt is playing atrocious defense. Mike Conley isn´t the youngest anymore and Donovan Mitchell is a liability. Whoever attacked Utahs Guards got a free pass, not just JB or SD, even Bullock or Finney-Smith. They did what they wanted to do. Penetrate - Kick. They even ran the same play 3 times after another in the fourth and still got what they wanted. If i was Utahs GM i would definitely send Mitchell away. For whatever reason you get more for ineffective volume-scorers with nearly no D than a strict defensive Center. Anyway. If they send Gobert away, i´d love to see him pair up with Doncic. Doncic even makes Dwight Powell look like a reasonable starter which he should not be. Gobert would probably score 24 ppg on lobs alone AND Dallas has the personal to cover small ball teams as well.

I understand how Stephen A feel just because the Mavericks won without Doncic but they did win 52 games in the regular season so they are capable of winning a game without him. Now whether the Mavericks win the series without him or not doesn't change the fact they are capable of winning a game or 2 without him.

JJ's point is that Jazz perimeter defense breakdown so easily that the Mavs can easily isolate Gobert. If their perimeter defense can at least show some resistance and not get blow by almost every possession then Gobert does not have to switch all the time. The dude is too slow to be running out to the 3pt line trying to contest a shot coz their wing/guard players are getting smoked.

Utah doesn’t have the wing defenders to switch everything & hold up on islands. So they have to hedge PnR’s with Gobert in drop coverage until they have to guard a stretch 5 or play 5 out. Plus on the other end, whenever teams switch a Gobert PnR, he can punish guards in the post like Embiid, Jokic or Giannis can. So he’s a liability on both sides of the floor.
@gjenkins1660

100% agree. I don't know the exact number of teams but I bet most of the top 10 defenses in the league switch everything. It's just the way the game is played now, Utah's defense is ancient in comparison.

Instead of giving up uncontested threes, uncontested layups will be given if Gobert is removed. No one on the Jazz can defend on the ball. Uncontested layups have a far higher percentage than uncontested three's.
