Yeah, it’s sad how little people appreciate the former eras of film from classic Hollywood to “new Hollywood” - and consequently the industry is collapsing because if you’re not learning from the best you’re learning from the 2nd rate so keeping a standard, never mind improving, won’t happen. The films brought up here are before my day but I know of them and fully realize that era was the best Hollywood has produced

I disagree with Stephen on one big thing, plenty of younger writers and directors love the movies that are being mentioned here but they can't control the corporate mindset of Hollywood. Like Matt Damn has said the middle budget movies are basically gone with the decline of physical media, he has said that he probably wouldn't have gotten Good Will Hunting made in Hollywood today. Billy Bob said the same thing about Sling Blade that he seriously doubts that movie would get approved and a budget today.

I'd have to disagree with the younger generations being only aware of the latest movies. With shorts, clips, memes, reaction videos, and some killer one-liners, Gen Z is discovering a back catalogue of great movies from the '70s to the 2000s. I laugh when they see an old movie like "The Shining" and there's a scene parodied or given homage in a movie or show and the Gen Zer says, "That was from The Simpsons." Kids are discovering old and great films every day.

Baldwin’s a true blue dude. That kind of talk though, it’s very tricky; the territory of critique on modern day actors & film taste. It’s almost like politics, you’ve got to be in it, but also stay out of commenting on it. Very touchy. Even masters like Scorsese, DePalma, Coppola, Blanchett, and Bigelow get trashed and meme’d for being honest and artistically critical. No matter how articulate and truthful they’re being, perhaps even more so because of it.

It does suck that the old formula of movies from decades ago are still the best but nobody wants them anymore. I don't care how far we go into the future, a good story is a good story and the way it is told is key. Most filmmakers today know how to make a movie but they don't have any idea how to TELL a story in an entertaining way. Movies of the past knew how to keep focus on the story over all else. Now it is about flash over story. I have wanted to direct horror since I was 13 and saw Scream. I started loving horror at age 8. Scream made me realize what I wanted to do with my life. But now I refuse to make movies in the formula of modern Hollywood movies. Movies no longer have any personal touches add to them, that show us the voice of a director. It's ALL business now. Everyone seems to copy the same broken blueprint these days.

These guys are talking about Hollywood, but there are lots of very interesting indie directors and actors out there, American and globally. Still lots of good film, you just have to look for it. But yes very little that comes out of Hollywood any more is real art, it's just entertainment designed to make money. Most of it isn't even new ideas, it's either a sequel or a remake of something that was successful in the past. Very lazy. The people that produce and fund Hollywood film don't care about art anymore.
