In this special event in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Royal Society of Literature, RSL Fellow Stephen Fry talks to comedian and author Shappi Khorsandi about writing across forms - from sketch comedy to poetry, independently and in collaboration, written and performed - that has elevated him to the status of national treasure.
Stephen grew up in a house with colossal bookcases filled with classic works of literature, and would use them as medicine cabinets to treat his childhood. He has remarked that writing is a ‘newer technology - only five or six thousand years old’ by which ‘we can change utterance into permanence’, and when once asked for writing advice, he responded: ‘the important thing to do for those who want to liberate their writing is to be able to let go of their self-consciousness, to allow the words to write for them.’
Presented in Partnership with the Royal Society of Literature.
Stephen Fry was elected a Fellow of the RSL in 2019. He is an actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, comedian, television presenter and film director. He has written and presented several documentary series, contributed columns and articles for newspapers and magazines, appears frequently on radio, reads for voice-overs and has written four novels and three volumes of autobiography, Moab Is My Washpot, The Fry Chronicles and More Fool Me. His re-tellings of Greek myths Mythos and Heroes will be followed by Troy this Autumn.
Shappi Khorsandi is a comedian and author who has appeared on countless TV and Radio shows including; Live At The Apollo, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, QI, The Graham Norton Show and as a contestant on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here. She is the author of the bestselling memoir, A Beginner's Guide To Acting English which tells the story of how her family were forced to flee Iran and gain asylum in the UK, and her first novel, Nina is Not OK. She is also the president of the British Humanist Association.

I think I may have an answer as to why younger people don't like to read non-fiction as much as fiction. I am 18 and just started university and I notice that, even though a lot of non-fiction works draw my attention, I never get around to reading them instead of novels/mythology books, because I am already busy with a lot of non-fiction every day: textbooks. I am currently studying languages and literature (English and German) so I am constantly busy analysing texts, studying the context in which they were written, looking at the structure etc. It's basically a constant stream of biographies and history books, and although it is very interesting to read about Alexander Pope or Bertold Brecht, the added element of study - HAVING to remember as much as you can, cramming all the information in your head - can sometimes ruin the experience a bit. So when I get home, I don't want to pick up another textbook (basically), I want to experience that escapism they talk about, I want to lose myself in the myths of Ovid's Metamorphoses, the tragic stories of Sophocles' heroes and kings, the strange world of Murakami etc. Non-fiction is for when you are older and don't have to deal with tests and exams anymore, when the only thing that makes you read it is pure interest and nothing else. I don't know if it's a quote I once read somewhere, whether it was a friend of mine who said it or if maybe I even invented it myself or not, but: "I love learning, I just don't like studying."
@elizaweeks3062
@elizaweeks3062 3 жыл бұрын
That is exactly it! I have never been able to narrow down why but you have worded it perfectly, it is the escapism or portal as Stephen Fry said, I am sure once I have finished my English Literature degree I will delve into non-fiction out of pure curiosity and yearning for learning.

Just wonderful. How I loved Christopher Robin as a child then reading it to my own daughter. I still have nearly all the books I’ve ever read. I now at 80 am addicted to letters and biographies. I have been an historian and travel writer. I started first reading Enid Blyton. She was banned from children’s libraries in New Zealand. I had a generous father thank goodness. What did it matter her language was limited? At 7 they were thrilling. Thank goodness there was no tv back then. Thank you both for such an enjoyable time.

I love the various, ususally emotional, critical approaches to ebook readers. At least this one is more elaborate. As you'd expect. They are so enormously more practical... I actually read a LOT more since it has become so convenient. The saving of space and logistics is worth any potential disadvantage. The only one i feel are the ususally tiny display sizes. And being able to resize the font... you age into appreciating the option. Also on a cultural and artistic sidenote: Stphen Fry has a bit of a resemblance to Jeremy Clarkson these days.

Is it possible that you are allowing the seductive aspects of convenience to trump more substantial considerations, including autonomy and permanence?
@jamesthecat

@@Gottenhimfella But as e-readers become less power intensive, the displays more flexible and even ink-like, & the flash memory becomes more reliable, surely they could be more permanent than a book, which may be affected by damp, foxing, mould or silverfish?! As for autonomy, well you need space to house all your books, and the time to read them, mostly in that place. And if the electricity fails at night...

My observation is these two lovely people sadly only serve to keep up the view of many that we are/were not all born into a class where literature is/was so easily thrust upon us by our parents, teachers, community. Personally my parents had to work endless hours in the cotton mills of Lancashire and when I grew up I was expected to follow in factories, no time for dalliances into the imaginary world of books Having been made redundant years later, I finally had time to read the complete works of Oscar Wilde and poems and stories by Brendan Behan and James Joyce. However I'm no academic snob, as I also love Stephen King, Tupac Shakur, Peter Corris,Ian Rankin and Val McDermott. I think the arts still have a long way to go to reach the masses and is still lending itself to an air of class snobbery.

gary That may have been the case many years ago but hasn't been for a long time. I'm 60, my family were on the poverty line their whole life, but there were always free libraries, school books, inspiration from my father and encouragement to learn about the world around me. I think it's great that you finally managed to find the literature and knowledge that excites your mind. It's a wonderful thing.

Nordhoff and Hall wrote "Mutiny on the Bounty" and went into a lot of detail about the differences among communities on different islands. Some were peaceful, happy, and cooperative while others were warlike and aggressive. The same goes for tribes in the Amazon. H. and Hall often referred to Rousseau's ideas and suggested that reality was inconsistent with what Rousseau and his adherents like to believe. Hobbes certainly exaggerated the negatives - Kalahari bushmen live reasonably healthy lives, unless there's a serious injury. Actually Polynesian Islanders regularly live into their seventies even wo. modern medicine. Where living conditions are benign,post-childhoo life expectancy is only 10 yrs or so short of our own. AVERAGE life expentancy can be much lower because of high infant mortality from poor water and vulnerability to disease. Where half the pop dies at age 2 (say 50/100) and the other half die at age 68 (50/100, average life expetancy is 35! ((2x50)+(6x50))= 350. 350/x100 = 35. Of course it was much worse in Dickensian London slums.

I bet this is what Stephen refers to and that his knowledge and memory failed him. A lot of new media also took it up to refute Lord of the Flies. Based on having been a boy in schools (including board school from Grades 10 to 12), L of the Flies seems pretty reasonable and it certainly accurately depicts a lot of modern human society. I love Pinker's Blind Slate book and also Fry but they're not always right.

@@eastonmartin5342 easy to feel "sympathy" for a guy like stephen who slags off religion in a completely pompous and uninformed way as if he's knows it all. He no doubt is a 'nice guy' but so was hitler towards those he viewed as his own. Once these guys are properly challenged or contradicted their true self surfaces.

It makes you seem a fool when nazis/hitler are brought to a debate. I’m sure they would be lovely dinner guests but the dirty elbows bother me.

My brother and sister in humanity please give me few minutes to explain our belief Jesus and Mary in Islam We muslims with the Grace of GOD have a balanced view regarding Jesus and Mary peace be upon them both. Jews speak ill of him and his mother and christians say he is GOD or the son of GOD or GOD him self or one in 3, We say ,He was the messiah and the messenger of GOD just like the other messengers, Abraham,Moses,Noah ,David and rest of them .They all came with the same message,worship One GOD ,even though the rules and regulations changed but basic message never changed ,Adam being the first prophet and the father of humanity(no evolution in Islam) and Prophet Muhammad being the last Prophet ,Pease be upon them all.(Adam was bowed down to by the Angels,(who are created from light) As respect for him not as worship ,all of the Angels compiled to this order of Allah except iblees ,(devil)who said to Allah,,you created me from fire and created Him(Adam) from clay( iblees was a jinn not a fallen angel ,the jinn race were created from smoke less fire and were on earth before us and are still present , They are a creation of free will like us .hidden from human eyes and are able to transform in to humans and animals and also able to fly ,Allah will judge them just like us and their destination will be either paradise or hell fire( both being physical ,after resurrection, ) ALLAH .the jews and Christians in middle east have been calling GOD ,Allah for centuries (which is His original Name) ,even the present day bible in arabic says Allah as GOD' Allah has no likeness to his creation,His names and attributes are all perfect , He is above his creation,above His throne,In a manner which befits him (The Throne is bigger than the universe and more) Allah is alone , it is said in the bible ,,listen oh Israel the Lord is our GOD The Lord is alone .In the Quran Allah says ,,Say He is Allah the ONE, Allah the eternal,He does not beget and He is not begotten and there is no one like Him . Quran chapter 112 The Prophets and Messengers before Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him,were send to a particular community of people ,Moses to his people,Noah to his people and Jesus to the children of Israel Jesus said “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” but the last Prophet and Messenger Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him ) Allah send him to all of the mankind and jinn until day of judgment Say, [O Muhammad], "O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all .Quran chapter 7.158. Prophet Muhammad is also Prophesied in the bible ,, Well then, who are you?" they asked. "Are you Elijah?" "No," he replied. "Are you the Prophet we are expecting?" "No." Join 1,21 According to this the Jews were waiting for a Prophet who is not John the Baptist peace be upon him and John the Baptist is also confirming that there is a another Prophet which is not The Messiah , In Isaiah 29-12 And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.” This Prophecy is for no other than Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. It has been narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari 3-The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, "I do not know how to read." The Prophet added, "Then the angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.'" ... Quran is the only word of GOD preserved in its original form,In Arabic, it has dozens of miracles ,including scientific and historical ,like the big bang , expansion of the universe, every living thing is created from water ,embryology in details ,black holes ,mountains as pegs ,different types of clouds ,water circle, Queen bee ,genders in plants ,Iron not from earth rather send down, ants speaking to each other , the preservation of the body of pharaoh as sign from Allah for the oppressors and much much more , christians on the other hand can not prove the authenticity of the 4 gospels ,which were written 70-90 years after jesus ,mark and Luke never met Jesus , the title according to mathew was added in the second century and the gospel of John was written last , 70 years after Jesus , Point to notied that there was sect of christian in first century called Ebionites ,who believed Jesus to be a Messager of Allah which the Muslims belief today. Don't forget in the council of Nicaea 325 years after Jesus,in this council,the emperor and bishops rejected all those Gospels which mentioned That Jesus was the Messenger and the Messiah. NOT the Son of GOD. Even the authors of the revised standard version bible comprising of 50 scholars has declared that the word BEGOTTEN and the trinity in john as fabrication and throw it out. One is ordered in Islam to worship Allah alone, directly seeking His help and forgiveness, with out any intermediates between him and Allah. All sins will be forgiven by Allah (GOD )with the exception of The sin of association ,making partners with Allah ,e.g. saying Jesus is GOD or son of GOD ,in this case eternity in hell fire for the one who makes partners with Allah. As for Mary she is considers the woman of all times so much so that there is a whole chapter in the Quran in her name called muryam (Mary) Allah says in Quran And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds, 3,42 (And mention] when the angels said, Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah ].in 3:46ّ He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous. in 3,47 She said, "My provider how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" [The angel] said, "Such is Allah ; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is. Allah says Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.3.59 Jesus Not crucified Allah says And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah ." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.4,157 Jesus will declare his innocence in front of Allah (GOD) on the day of judgment Al-Ma'idah 5:116 And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah ?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. Al-Ma'idah 5:118 ,we muslims also believe in the second coming of Jesus peace be upon him Jesus will return and kill the false messiah (dajal) and rule on earth as a just ruler and command the human beings to worship ALLAH alone ,just like what He did when He was on earth for the first time ,,(Jesus said) indeed Allah is my provider and yours so worship him 3.51 I pray all of you out there ,who seek nearness to Allah (GOD), that He guides you to Islam and showers his mercy on you, Please email me for a free pda copy of my book Islam in Brief abdulrehmankari604@gmail.com May ALLAH guide you all Ameen

Let me explain our knowledge , that of the Godless English , we know that burning bushes don't talk , we know that you cant walk on water also there are no winged horses that you can get about on like a taxi , we know that we don't come from Adam and Eve , we know this because we didn't accept the poor explanation given by ignorant people from a few thousand years ago herding goats in the desert . Thankfully we looked deeper with open eyes and saw that nature is far more wonderful than any monotheistic ramblings , our exploration helped in giving us all the modern world , Newton mechanics , Faraday , Dirac the list goes on , all great minds that doesn't require a made up being to explain anything . Here in England we are free to think , free to challenge , free to speak , we are no longer subjected to dogma , Long live The Enlightenment , Rational Thought and Science . It has done more for Humanity than any Religion has .
