Snooker is so much in the mind at that level and Ronnie is one of the best at playing well under pressure. that ability, added to being the best positional player in the game and arguably the best potter and safety player is why he doesn't get beaten very often. players have to play no-miss snooker to beat him most of the time.

I find it difficult to understand how anyone who's followed this sport for so long would dispute that Ronnie is the best player to pick up a cue. The records speak for themselves. Just to play devils advocate...if he's the greatest player ever, why didnt he win anything in the 90's (except 92 uk) or for first 10yrs of his career? He was around for 6 of Hendry's 7 titles. Also why has he never dominated any particular era like Davis, Hendry or even Selby for a 5 yr period? He has consistantly been a top 3 player for 25yrs but never dominated.

I've seen Hendry and Ronnie - if they both play their best at the crucible. I'd back Hendry. Ronnie imo took a very long time to level the record. If the standard was so easy/hard like some detractors say he would of never broken it period. There was imo a period 2007-2012 - where there was a vacuum Ronnie could of dominated but he did not. He obviously won it a couple of times but for me a peak Hendry would of absolutely dominated that era.

We can all talk shit all we want back and forth all these sports critics ex players and all don’t mean shit. Truth is his brain and his talent and experience in the game makes him impossible to defeat when he wants to win. Most players have one game style and if they play well they win. This dude has 64 ways of playing about 23 cue actions and 19 mood swings and the fact that he can switch in between makes him win even when he plays like dog shitt. It was a Jimmy White reference from 1993 or '94. Either way, it fell flat because while there's a lot of history between him and O'Sullivan, it's completely different to White's history against Hendry. There wasn't any actual bad blood between Hendry and White, so Jimmy's comment came off as a light hearted joke, despite the scale of the loss and he was still gracious and sportsmanly in his actions post-match. However much of a knob Ronnie can be at times, he's still a nicer presence than Carter. Ali's got my sympathy with everything he's been through, but even then I still think his attitude towards other players is horrendous. The constant arrogance in defeat, the arsey attitude towards flukes (*cough*the slow clap*cough) and his constant playing victim. Carter brings all the shit he gets from snooker fans on himself.

I have a theory that Ronnie got really wound up by Carter continually bemoaning his luck in matches against him down the years….hence the “mr angry” comment he made during barge gate……..think it winds Ronnie up because he never bemoans bad luck or shakes his head , he’s very sporting regarding that and calling fouls, so think he just got sick of Carter moaning as if he was only losing because of Ronnie’s luck.

Carter wants to beat Ronnie so badly it must hurt and gnaw at his self esteem especially after the realisation that as long as Ronnie is still out there and capable of playing to a decent level then he'll NEVER be able to get the better of him. That 1 big Carter victory at the WC few years ago he (Carter) knew he'd caught Ronnie on an off day but those days are few and far between since his work with Ray Reardon and Dr Steve Peters. Nobody disputes his abilities. The proactive lack of respect for fellow pros, the venues, and the game:- no matter what his mental state, that's absolutely not neccesary. It shows a signs of the man himself, rather than any mental illness he harbours. Sad really, and a possible hypocrisy for him to call Carter 'not a nice person', if Carter is correct and he cleared his nose out on the venue he called filthy!!! Great player, amazing- if any youngsters are to challenge him, it will be tough when they, and the game, are so belittled by its best player We could do with him encouraging the next Ronnie, rather than being so snide and destructive about the game that has given him so much.

I found both speeches at the final to be a bit lacking in decorum as I've said elsewhere obviously due to the bad blood between the pair of them. It also seemed wince inducing listening to Ali quote Jimmy White's line after Hendry had beaten him in 1994. I think much of the players that are on the tour now are just a bit too vulnerable to make any real impact at this moment in time. Whether that's due to what goes on at the table of there are outside personal or family matters and that can have an effect why the focus isn't laser sharp other than getting the yips. If Ronnie does win his 8th Championship (an if but more of a when), there's no doubt he'll have richly deserved it.

The thing is, when Ronnie's head isnt in the game (which is the vast majority of the time) hes only the second or third best player in the world. When his heads in the game, hes unbeatable. Thats why hes so difficult to beat. You can be pretty sure hes going to turn up at 100% for one session, so if you're playing your best you can write that session off 3-1 at best. Then you can draw the rest if you stay on top of your game, but to win that session back and beat him over 33 frames you have to be the best player in the world. Thats particlarly difficult when Ronnie is the best player in the world. The Crucible is his to lose but hes capable of anything, good or bad.

Ronnie was showing he can mess about as if not bothered while his opponents are giving it everything then when he feels like it he will flick the switch and destroy them, The reason he can do this is exactly how he says it and that is there is no one good enough in snooker and the only way he would drop out of the top 16 is to lose an arm and a leg, With this said he and carter have a fued going back years so Ronnie let him believe he could win then blew him away, It really is insane to think he is that good and his plan all along for this season was to win all 3 triple crown events and he has now got the first 2 and will have all 3 soon enough and Hendry knows his record of 7 worlds he shares with Ronnie is getting beaten which must be a sickener for him but he is still an all time great regardless, Ronnie says he has never dominated like Davis and Hendry but he is changing that in this decade and to win this coming world would put him on 3 world titles in the 20s alone 2020 2022 2023 and that's without the other tournaments he has won so yes Ronnie you are dominating and at your age too which is unprecedented until now, What I admire is how he takes on the governing bodies of snooker in his own way which I see as payback for how they treated Alex Higgins and the unfair pay structure which is making it so hard for players more so many up and coming ones who simply struggle to pay for their overheads while snooker itself is globally huge with huge profits

I don’t know if it’s that the 90’s and 2000’s was a golden era for talent or if there were better times before but you don’t have to take that big of a step back to understand how good that era of players were because by and large they’re the same players you’re still watching dominate now. To think pretty much all of the top players in the world were in their 20’s and 30’s. People talk about the class of ‘92 but what’s often overlooked is the other fantastic players that came just either side of their career beginnings. Hendry, Hunter, Stevens, Selby, Robertson, Murphy, Hawkins, Ding, Doherty. I could go on and on. The fact is that if a 20 year old comes through and dominates world snooker ala Hendry, that player is going to come out of China. There simply is not enough European players of quality coming through. Jimmy White who granted is on a wilcard would still go in favourite against pretty much anyone outside the top 32 and is still more than capable of having a run at a tournament with a bit of luck. It’s actually not that surprising that all of a sudden O’Sullivan is the youngest this and the oldest that. And Higgins has now competed in however many years in whatever event. Don’t get me wrong they’re great achievements but they are setting records that will never be broken because there is no one good enough to stop them and there is almost certainly no one ever going to be good enough for long enough to beat their records. It’s hard to think of too many other sports in which you can dominate for such a long period without the next crew coming through to succeed you. O’Sullivan at times cops a bit of flack for showing contempt to the next generation of players that are coming through but is he wrong? He keeps making the point that he’s old and can’t see and has a sore arm etc etc but it more like sounds to me like he’s challenging the players if they want to beat him then they have to get better. Because he and most of the 40 plus generation are regularly beating and in reality embarrassing most players under the age of 40. And despite how great it is to witness what we’re watching, the cruel reality is what we are really watching is our sport slowly die in front of us.
