My 9th Great Grandfather Edward Doty was Stephen's indentured servant on the Mayflower. Like Hopkins, Doty eventually became wealthy, I still seek evidence that I am related to Hopkins. Thank you for this masterpiece brief tribute.

Same here... 9th GGF was Edward Doty which may explain some of my rebellious spirit. Also have direct relatives with 4 others on that ship, two passing the first winter (Fullers). Many millions of folks are direct relatives from the Mayflower. But the question I have is Why do people put so much emphasis on relatives who came over on the Mayflower when an established community existed in St Augustine for some 80 years prior to Plymouth? Is it just bragging rights? I try to live a solid ethical life and be the best person I can. My birth rights come from God. Same with the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) folks. I joined SAR after finding a patriot in my lineage, which I have since found about 20, but much of the attitude of these guys is one of a superiority complex which turned me off bigly. The average person doesn't care who our ancestors were. We should remember our past and know where we came from but still be humble. Just be the best person you can and respect others.

Stephen Hopkins was my 11th great grandfather through his son Giles and his granddaughter Abigail Hopkins Merrick. She married Ensign William Merrick and to this day the name “Anson” is prevalent in my Merrick family. We’re curious about whether “Ensign” morphed into “Anson” through the generations

Legend of Stephen Hopkins By Faye Collum Fairley Stories unfurled about the new world As the years turned into decades History was made by those so brave They embarked on a journey by faith. Many brave men lived back then, The bravest will walk on before. On uncharted land, unfriendly to man; Stephen Hopkins stepped onto the shore. Stephen was born in fifteen eighty-one In England to Elizabeth and John This great man was in great demand For his leadership abilities alone. On a ship at sea, so famous was he He was noted by William Shakespeare Through perils he came, earning more fame, His reputation for bravery was clear Each journey’s end earned new friends But enemies also, it seems. Faced with death, this too was a test Each time, he reigned supreme. Soon his name had increased in fame Bringing more reasons to fight One such excursion, upon his returning He was told his wife had died. Children in hand, this famous man Had no trouble finding a new wife This family of four set out to explore And soon would start a new life. A journey was planned for a new land Again, Stephen’s help was required Going to a shore he had been before He was greatly feared and admired. To answer their calling, he and john Alden Boarded the famous Mayflower With Myles Standish, these men brandished Weapons and tools, with great power All in danger, the saints and the strangers Together they formed a compact This mighty trip on this mighty ship Determined to never turn back Limited provisions, and lack of nutrition Brought sickness and ill health Despite the damage, they faced the challenge And on they bravely sailed In a great storm, a baby was born The only one this title to claim The happy Papa was Stephen Hopkins Oceanus was the baby’s name As land drew near, it brought great fear Of savages living on this land Stories they heard were quite absurd Stephen Hopkins then took a stand “we must befriend these unknown men If we have hopes to survive” He was there before on this very shore And he knew how to stay alive. These saints devout had dreamed about The new world, their “promised land” Strangers too, had their own view Of the wealth awaiting each man. A group of men, prepared to defend Rowed toward the dark shore line They soon would see, a different degree Of dangers for them to find. This December they would long remember When their foot touched the land The dangers afloat that mighty boat Would not be experienced again. Land brought forth a different sort Of troubles they must endure They held true, and followed through With Stephen’s advice so sure. That first winter was brutal and bitter And half of the travelers died They buried the dead, and forged ahead To build their new world with pride. They learned a lot about planting crops From the Indians living there They soon discovered by helping each other The new world was better when shared The settlement grew, and the people knew To survive, they must be bound By pacts they made in the early days When they first touched the new ground. Stephen was strong, helped them along To make their personal choice A newly found land, where every man Will stand and speak his own voice This country began with women and men Who stood by their ideas and dreams Working to find their peace of mind Not bowing to evil men’s schemes These women and men could always depend On Stephen Hopkins’ sound advice When he saw danger, he showed his anger And stood up for what is right. This man of conviction took his position Of good over evil each time If justice was needed, his anger was heated, And promptly responded in kind Many brave men, some foe, some friend Walked over this earth years ago But of the many, in sixteen twenty, Stephen Hopkins is my hero. From years ago, all those who know How history came to be Have someone in line to always shine Like a beacon on the dark sea I’m proud to say, in early days When pilgrims came here to live I give a hand to a very brave man Who gave all that he could give. Stories unfurled about the new world As the years turned into decades History was made by those so brave They embarked on a journey by faith. Many brave men lived back then, The bravest will walk on before. On uncharted land, unfriendly to man; Stephen Hopkins stepped onto the shore.

William Brewster, Thomas Rogers, John Alden and Stephen Hopkins were some of my 12th great grandfather's. Family skuttlebutt was we were descendents of Mary Allerton and this folklore was bandied about for decades. I believed it for years until I set out to prove it. I still haven't found any evidence we are descendants of Mary Allerton but instead found the others, and plenty of documentation of a lot of intermarrying between 1st and 2nd cousins on the Hopkins line in my family (7 so far). 😳 I could have lived my entire life without that knowledge and been very happy to not knowing. 🤢 Long ago I met a beautiful young man in high school when I was 16 years old. Our connection was strengthened by the fact we'd moved 3000 miles away from home in Massachusetts where we were both born to Arizona; we'll be married 40 years in October. We recently discovered that he too is a descent of Stephen Hopkins (and also Richard Warren) making us very distantly related. 😳 Thankfully we don't share any DNA, but honestly I would never have married someone even distantly related 400 years in the past had I known. You never really know who you are marrying. After taking 2 separate DNA tests and exhaustive research for an application to the General Descends of the Mayflower Society (GDMS) later I've come to this conclusion: every single person on this planet is distantly related, you just have to look back far enough in the family tree to find the connection. So ... howdy cousins! 👋👋👋

Corn to the Pilgrims mean a grain crop, usually, but not limited to, wheat. Maize was specifically called "Indian corn" by the early New Englanders. So, it is right.

My 11 th great grandfather. And this is written like a true colonizer 🙄. They didn't "find" anything, they stole it. And it was.so convienenly left out how they began hundreds of years of Europeans brutally slaughtering Native Americans 🤢 I've been able to trace three out of four of my grandparents to the Mayfair knowing that I wouldn't find the 4th and honestly I didn't expect it and I am thoroughly disgusted.

Whatever! In doing genealogy I have found that many of my ancestors were murdered and burned out of their homes, their children killed or sold to the French. That street goes both ways.

Oh god. Stop being disgusted about your heritage. How are u gonna go thru life hating yourself because of what law and order was like 400 years ago. That's like saying all man should be disgusted because 1000 years ago we were cannibals and cavemen. Shut up
