I loved this talk and it really put things into perspective. If someone is in the hospital after a heart attack people visit them, they bring them flowers and rally around them. If a kid breaks their arm people help them, sign their cast, etc. When someone has depression they are either ignored or even shunned (due to stigma and misunderstanding). You may have to go to a psychiatric facility and often nobody visits you there or even worse they treat you differently when you get out.

Jesus can lift you out and give you a new life. Jesus knows exactly what you are going through and He loves you more than you could ever know. I am sharing my best friend's story with you in hopes that you too will find comfort for your weary heart. God bless. Precious Memories-By Sonya Lakey Family Story Little did our family of six know that Friday evening, September 24th, 2021, would be the last night our family would be complete. We laughed together, played games, sang, and enjoyed listening as our 16-year-old son, Ethan, played the piano for us. I packed a lunch for Ethan for a church mountain hike he was going on the following day. My mother (who was visiting from out of state) and I woke early with Ethan on Saturday morning. He hugged me and smiled, never pulling away or rushing me. He got in the car, waved, said he'd see me later and he loved me. It was hard to watch my "new driver" heading out on his own that morning. As Ethan pulled out of the gate, I turned to my mother and said, "It's just so hard letting go." Little did I know how much "letting go" I was really doing. That was the last time I saw Ethan. He did not make it home that evening. That afternoon, a friend tried to contact my husband, leaving an urgent message to call him back. He tried several times to return the call to no avail. As we were preparing supper, an overwhelming feeling of deep concern for Ethan filled my heart. I quietly blinked back tears. I glanced out the window, half expecting to see a police officer pull up to the house, but no one arrived. However, within a few minutes, a patrol car DID pull into the driveway. In my heart, I feared the worst. My husband and I went out to meet the officer, who confirmed our fears. Hesitantly, he told us our son had fallen off of a bluff and had succumbed to his injuries. Our hearts were crushed; they still are. Yet, in all of our brokenness, deep, continual grief and loneliness, our family has such a blessed Hope and assurance that we will see our dear son and brother again. You see, when Ethan was a young boy, he was saved; he put his faith in Jesus alone to forgive his sins and to take him to Heaven when he died. He realized some very important truths from the Bible that he would want to share with you. His Story Everyone is a sinner. Sin is any violation of God’s Law. God is holy, just and righteous, and He cannot allow sin in His presence. Ethan realized that he - like all of us - had sinned; and his sin separated Him from God. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; ” (Romans 3:23) “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12) He understood that, because of his sin, he deserved to spend eternity in Hell. “For the wages of sin is death;” (Romans 6:23a) [Wages: price] “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8) Ethan believed that Jesus, God’s Son, paid the price for all sin when He died on the cross - because His sinless sacrifice was the only thing that could satisfy the just demands of a righteous, holy God. Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb, but He arose the third day, triumphant over sin, death, and Hell. Jesus is alive today! “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) Ethan was sorry for his sin, repented (turned), and received by faith the free gift that God offered to him. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) “...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b) Because of this great salvation, Ethan lived his life serving Jesus. He worked hard to spread this Good News to the world. He is alive in Heaven with Jesus today; and because of this great HOPE in Christ, we know we will see him again soon - not because he was a great kid, but because of his faith in the great Saviour! “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” (John 10:28) Your Story What about you? What if you had fallen to your death that day - What if you were to die today? Where will you spend eternity - Heaven or the Lake of Fire? There will not be any parties in the Lake of Fire. It is a place of eternal torment for those who reject God's Son. The Word of God is very clear that there is only One Way to Heaven. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) We did not know that Ethan would step into eternity that day; however, because he put his faith in Jesus alone for his salvation, Ethan was ready to go. Some day - perhaps today - you will take your last breath here on earth, and you will step into eternity. Where you spend eternity is determined by what you do with Jesus Christ. Will you accept Him or reject Him? You are not promised another day or another breath. Eternity begins soon - Are you ready? “...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31b) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) “(...behold, now is the day of salvation.)” (2 Corinthians 6:2c) ****************************** This testimony has been made into a gospel tract. Since this lecture was posted 8 years ago there has been countless other medical professionals that support this "new radical treatment" for depression. I really appreciate his presentation. It makes it so clear for the layman like myself. 2 years ago I started on this path of change because I knew that this was a way to save my life and I knew it wasn't going to come from a prescription pad. (Been there, done that!) I still have a long way to go but my life has light, and purpose now. It has changed my life for the better.

I was always an upbeat, positive, outgoing person. As I got older I’ve lost my zest in life. I feel like I just exist. I’m not living. I find it hard to participate in life, to care like I used to. It’s hard for me to understand why I’ve become this way. I’ve taken medication for this not long ago, the side effects were horrible, so they weaned me off of it. I thought I could handle dealing with it with no meds. I was sorrily mistaken. I had no idea how debilitating it can be. Currently seeking mental health help. The biggest challenge is motivating the individual experiencing depression to change to a healthy lifestyle. Many may start changing their habits only to slip back into sedentary lifestyles and poor diet, especially as winter approaches. For those he can stick to Professor Illardi's approach, I have no doubts about success rates. Some principles in this lecture are already well known to mental health professionals, but he expands and adds to them brilliantly. Very engaging and interesting. Thank you so much.

For the lazy, this is the video in 5 steps. Step 1: Exercise at least 45min a day and keep your heart rate up. Heart rate should be around (220 - age = bpm). Example: 28 year old. 220-28 = 192 bpm Step 2: Take fish oil. Look at fine print on bottle and find EPA and DHA values. You need to consume at least 1000mg of EPA and 500 mg of DHA. Buy fish oil based on this and increase as needed. (Depending on fish oil brand you may need to take 6+ pills) Step 3: Get sunlight. Step 4: Get 7-8 hours of sleep. Step 5: Positive thoughts. Don't dwell on negative thoughts. Cured! ; ]

My depression is situational (very bad childhood) and genetic, so I am told. Taking fish oil is not going to help me. Furthermore, I have chronic pain, and cannot exercise that vigorously. It is a vicious cycle. I have tried many things to get rid of this pain and have had 2 surgeries. Doctors cannot solve the problem, and neither can I. At this point I am on a vegan, high carb diet to see if this helps me. But I will try fish oil.

I'm 90% better than I was when on the meds and all it took was bring myself back to a more natural way of existing. My advice is to try it and you'll notice the difference after your first long walk, it calms the mind almost immediately. Good luck

I've never been an "alternative medicine" type of person and I took prescribed antidepressants for 15+ years with limited success. Over the past 6 years or so, regular exercise and EPA Omega-3 have been a game changer....even during the dreary dark winters of the northern midwest.
@lyvsix2 жыл бұрын
I dont know about omega 3 but if someone suffers from depression and/or anxiety, sport (vigorous, at least 45 min a day) is not optional, is MANDATORY. Same thing with sex/masturbation. Those two are the biggest sources of feel good chrmicals in our brain. You will still suffer from depression, but it wont feel like you need to kill yourself asap, you know?? Finallly force yourself to have a bit of social life, we are social animals and we need yo interact and feel loved by others and love, a friend can makee you feel better even if just ehile you are together. Mix that with eating healthy and not very much, get enough rest (those should be obvious),take your meds and work hard on your therapy... If you can get prescribed esketamine I would DEFINITELY try it, but that is just m.

This is fantastic! I've been struggling with depression for over 15 years and I've tried a lot of things including medication, psycho therapy on a weekly basis for 7+ years and the whole positive thinking thing and changing thought patterns, etc. unfortunately without much success at all. This video explains depression and the cause of it from a scientific point of view that makes sense. It's important for everyone to understand that clinical depression is NOT something you can just talk yourself out of nor can it be cured with simply thinking more positive. I'm going to try these techniques and I feel very hopeful about it now that I understand my depression so much more than ever. Thank you so much for posting!

You're right clinical depression isn't simple, but it is something that can be worked out through things like therapy and medicine too. I work in psychiatry, have myself had severe to moderate depression on and off through life, I've seen fantastic recoveries and right now I'm feeling amazing and have been for a while. For me, small amounts of medicine for a very limited amount of time along with doing my own research deep diving into psychology and facing my own ugly traits and understanding my thoughts and emotions is what has brought me to where I am now, where I'd say that understanding did the heavy lifting while medicine was a small boost that let me get there. I wish you the very best of luck and don't be afraid of feeling better, if you've struggled for a long time it can be scary to imagine that you "wasted all this time". Look forward, live in the now and enjoy :)

I learned of this guy on a whim here through YT. Found out that he wrote a book, listened to the audiobook, practiced some of the principles that he laid out and I felt noticeably better in terms of my anxiety and depression in a relatively short period of time. I did trail off and experienced several small relapses but the point is that the principles have to be practiced consistently until you get to a point of maintenance. It would be nice if we could do something one time and never have to think about it again, but that isn't how life works. I'm revisiting the things that I've learned from Dr. Ilardi and incorporating more of the factors of the "cure" and I believe that I'll do even better than before especially if I stay consistent.

I find that to avoid depression I need to keep it moving in all the time and in respects. My mind and body need to be occupied with the pursuit of achievable goals. A body in motion - stays in motion. The cool thing about practice or aiming toward becoming expert at something is that the more you do something the better you become. So, just tamking one step at a time actually gets you there. The greatest lesson I learned when my world goes dark is to change my mind frame. Your perception is your reality... and its malleable.

2021 was the hardest, darkest time of my life. I was physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually BROKEN. But now I feel genuinely GRATEFUL and BLESSED that I had to go through that phase because GOD has graciously REVEALED Himself to me in miraculous ways. I am fortunate that He allowed me to know Him at a very young age, but this year is so much SPECIAL because of what WE (yes, GOD and me) have been through last year. He showed me how POWERFUL prayers truly are when I started to focus on WHO HE IS rather than who I am, on WHAT HE CAN DO rather than what I deserve. The experience was MAGICAL. He showed up BIG TIME and assured me that HE is indeed a LISTENING and RESPONDING GOD. Oh how my faith has skyrocketed as a result! Now more than ever, I have very bright HOPE for my future because I experienced first hand how RELIABLE God is. And for that I will forever be grateful. You are one of many, and as the lecturer says… it is almost natural that it happened. Take it one step at a time, and try not to be too hard on yourself. The beautiful thing about life, which is often long nowadays, is that no experience is equal to another. You don’t know if you’d enjoy what other people experience that might seem nice. And, you are constantly changing, so you are not able to know what will be meaningful to you in some time, or if you will come across it. However, chances are you will encounter many such situations just by virtue of being human and being here. With the right knowledge, and telling yourself that you will trip many times along the way, and that that’s okay, you can get through this illness. Sometimes, recognizing that our environment has hurt us or taught us certain lessons that eventually lead to depression is also useful. I would push anyone to try to understand what happened and forgive, especially forgive themselves. If not looking to the past can be yet another way to ruminate and get stuck and cause oneself pain. It’s like I am writing this to myself :) Good luck!

The #4 Social Connection is huge and I feel the most important. I may be wrong on this, but it seems like with the recent mass shootings, they all had Social Isolation in common. 1. That disconnect and isolation and "hateful inner dialogue" creates the depression that leads to people going out and killing. Picture Adam Lanza, James Holmes, Dylan Roof, etc. sitting in front of their computers 24/7 with no friends or positive people that they can vent, confide in and talk to about their problems/hateful mindset. Their Social Isolation I believe was key in creating the events that led up to their murderous rampages. 2. This Disconnect is ALSO (imo) what leads lonely and unfulfilled people to join groups for that sense of community and connectedness. Some are "good" (Church, bowling group), and some are "bad" (violent gangs, extremist religious groups). Every human being wants and NEEDS that Social Connection, and I do not believe our society or culture stresses its importance enough. This sense of disconnect among people and our youth is something that needs to be recognized and addressed.

As a guy "over sixty" I can tell you that I was depressed off and on my whole life but when I was young one didn't feel safe to talk about it, or to seek help for it, or to even understand and acknowledge it - you felt the pain! but you had no category to put it in other than "I just suck at life for some reason". And even if you did ask for help people would just tell you "get over it" or "what do you have to de depressed about?", even doctors. There was a LOT to be depressed about back then. It was a dark time in so many ways compared to today. I am not at all surprised to see that depression was underreported and under-recognized before the age of Oprah and all that. The idea that life was a lot better back then strikes me as dead wrong, though it did have SOME advantages. Now I do not doubt there is a lot of truth to the idea that depression is something of an epidemic but I do doubt that only 5% of people over sixty ever felt it. I doubt that very much! I can only assume the "studies" about prevalence by age group involves a degree of self-reporting or help seeking? How do you measure depression prevalence without this bias? Studies like this are notoriously unreliable compared to more objective measures. The suicide rate is increasing since 1990 - that is an objective fact, I think - but my sense of this is that it is much more complex than he is suggesting. Having said that I do think this guy is on the right track here. "screen time" is like a drug, a poor substitute for real living that is stimulating and engaging at first but ultimately unhealthy and unfulfilling. Before the internet it was TV but TV isn't quite engaging enough to offer an alternative to life and thus most of us would get up and do other things like "going out to play" just enough to stay sane - now you have an alternative to real life that overlaps to a degree with real connection and living but which is not a substitute for it in total. We have to figure out a balance.

Through my lowest points I forced myself to go to work every day, I’m lucky to be self employed. There is another good talk by a professor at Stanford University. Here’s one thing perverse about depression, one can’t enjoy a sunny day, it robs us of the very things that would usually make us happy.

I agree that Dr. Illardi's suggestions are useful. I have suffered from clinical depression some years ago, and increasing exercise, improving diet, and getting outside more has helped me. However, by nature I seem to be a rather restless and combative person, living in a place where almost everyone practices (or claims to) the kind of lifestyle he recommends. I find myself rather bored and restless when I am around positive, peaceful, upbeat people. My perception is that everyone is saying to me, "Just be like me, then you will be happy." Even when I am not depressed (which is most of the time) such advice irritates me more than it satisfies, inspires, or consoles me. As the old 60s poster with the hungry vultures sitting on a rock said, "Patience my ***, I am going to kill something."

learn to be patient and temper your expectations. If you have depression in simply won't get better if you look for essy answers. If you want to find the help that will work for you you need to be open minded and listen to a lot of people's persepctive. If you get frustrsted when the answers aren't obvious right away, you'll be frustrated at yourself later for not sticking with it and seeing if there was anything to it. Most of the time you will be dissapointed, and most of what you hear will be what you've heard a thousand times before but occasionally you will get exactly what you need and that's helps you to learn the next steps. We can't just time stamp the relevant parts, because we don't know why you're depressed, what you've tried before and what has and hasn't been effective. There's no "secret" to being happy, besides trying.

Jesus can change your life. If you or your Church would be interested in passing them out or if you would like to send a word of encouragement to the family, please go to: facebook.com/GITM-Foundation-113997824650357/

As far as ancestral fears, I found it fascinating that one of my daughter, from the time she could talk had this innate fear of bears. Whenever she would go into a dark enclosed space she would say things like “a bear’s going to get me”, and has the look of a real flight or flight response. Being that her ancestors came from Northern/Eastern/Western Europe this would make perfect sense from a generic/ancestral memory perspective. It’s almost as if she instinctively knew that bears could be present in dark enclosed areas ie caves.
@yourtypicalinternetcommenter113 жыл бұрын
Don’t be ridiculous. I’m European and neither me nor my family or anyone I know have or had a fear of bears even though we all had the same ancestors as your kid. This is a quality BS right there. Kids have irrational fears, my son is scared of the bathtub drain does it mean his ancestors were victims or drains? 😂😂😂

When my daughter was a toddler, she found a picture in a magazine of a short-faced bear, standing in a threatening posture on a mountainside. It terrified and fascinated her. She would open to the page, look at it, and start to cry, rinse and repeat. She also developed a fascination with the slippery set of stairs, and no barrier I put up would stop her--she'd climb over and head up. As a final resort, I tore the picture out of the magazine, pasted it to the barrier, and she looked at it, cried, and ceased with the attempts to climb the barrier. However, she continued to go to the barrier and look at the picture intently. Now, one might conclude from this that my parenting was suspect, but I promise you she was never exposed to bears prior to that, nor did we teach her that bears were a hazard to be avoided. Make of it what you will.

I assume you mean there is little talk of the pandemic in the comments in response to this video that was recorded 8 years ago... I am sorry you are experiencing depression and it’s been aggravated by the pandemic and it’s characteristics. I wish you the best. Just wanted to pass along to you some info compiled during the pandemic in regards to depression and suicide; the suicide rate dropped while calls to suicide hotlines increased exponentially. Clinicians have surmised that during a world wide crisis, many people who struggle to get out of their own thoughts, focus on community and the difficulties of others, which decreases the level of depression. At the same time, suicide hotline calls increased exponentially during the pandemic because people who are very social and outgoing were depressed and lonely for the first time in their lives and didn’t know how to deal with the aloneness. The flood of calls were quite often people who were inexperienced with feeling alone and living in their heads for some, maybe the first time. Anyway, I wish you good health and as much happiness as you desire!

This is brilliant and a must-watch for people in western society where it seems the word “depression” is so casually used to describe a plethora of perfectly human reactions to a vast array of life events and subsequently maladaptive coping mechanisms. Thank you for also acknowledging how differently we deal with death and bereavement in other cultures that serve as a protective factor against depression. From observation and the growing body of research; the gut-brain axis is also (highly) implicated in psychological wellbeing and the ageing process, along with the complex interplay between genetic predisposition and environmental factors.
