Stak describes how the night escalated with Ron Artest and how he and players from the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons ended up in the Palace of Auburn Hills crowd. I got lucky seeing this live. I had just gotten home, turned the tv on, I just happened to have it on ESPN by sheer luck, and things just started to escalate. I remember all of the discussions afterwards in regards to Stephen Jackson and at the time they weren't good. Then Grantland did a story on it and when I read what was going through his mind I understood because I was raised the same way and would have done, and have done, the same thing. You're not sure what exactly happened but when one of your boys is in the middle of something, you just charge in to help him out and worry about the consequences later. You'd rather be punished later than not come to the aid of one of your boys, even if he is wrong. I know for some people it's hard to understand, not even saying anyone is wrong for thinking differently, I just know some of us it's absolutely drilled into us from birth you don't leave your own behind so you just act. I respected that about Jackson and understood why his former teammates liked him so much.

What people never get is the crowd was fixated on the scuffle on the court, they NEVER saw the drink hit Artest. What the crowd did see was Artest running into the stands to whale on a fan. So from the crowd's perspective Artest just went crazy. Then Jackson hit a fan. So all the fans in the Palace, except the dummy that threw the drink, are thinking that the Pacers without provocation were just whaling on the fans. That's why they were booing and throwing crap at the Pacers.

My wife (then fiancee) and I were watching this on tv as it happened. While I still an not Pistons fan, I was not rooting for the Pacers either (because I am from Chicago), my wife liked that Pistons team. When the narrative changed the next day, from the Detroit fans started the ruckus to the Players are outta hand, we both said it was bs. My wife still holds this a little against Ron "Meta..." Artest, but having seen how he has grown I don't. It was odd that Ron chose to be so ... vulnerable as to lay on the scorers table instead of going to his bench - but that was no excuse what so ever for any fan to take any action. Detroit metro is not anyplace I would ever be vulnerable. So much so that when my nephew started a "long distance relationship" with a girl from there, I told it would not go well - and of course it didn't. One of the reasons that boy is not part of my life anymore - too numbskulled.

Yea you can. And he did. But no, fans don’t have a right to assault players. And a player’s right to defend themselves from being assaulted doesn’t get nullified with the purchase of a ticket.
