It means we don't talk about something clearly outlined in the book as a disturbing thing (child murders) but we do talk about something disturbing that's clearly outlined as a good thing (child orgies). But I promise you if the book tried to show child murder as a good thing, it would be controversial too.

It's weird that when the book came, out in '86, or the mini series came out in '90 I don't remember nearly as many people going on about "that" scene as you do now, even though common sense would tell anybody that scene couldn't even make it in an R rated film. Wonder what half these people would say if they actually read The Godfather and saw the stuff in that book that didn't make it in the film.

I think cause after reading over 1000 pages of weird. 6 pages isn't going to phase you much. With social media anyone can stop reading after that scene and be like "holy shot child orgy!" And send it out. So word got out more.
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 7 жыл бұрын
Nelson Smith You had to go deep in the book to get to that scene, damn near 1000 pages. Nobody was going to film it, I promise you. Also, do remember that this was pre-Internet, where you had to dig to find weirdness like this.

You'd want to see a subplot about Sonny Corleone's giant wang on film? IIRC it did get kind of a wink, wink, nod, nod acknowledgment in the Godfather movie, though, with his wife holding up her arms in a "I just caught a fish THIS BIG," gesture somewhere in the wedding scene.

@johnathonhaney8291 7 жыл бұрын
Veronica Surratt I wouldn't. While it does have some Lovecraft elements--cosmic demon from the stars, small town with ugly, destructive secrets--it has more in common with King's inspiration Richard Matheson. I'd recommend you seek out Stir Of Echoes (the book, not the movie) to see what I'm talking about.

It's been a while since I read the book. But wasn't Derry also influenced by It? It crashlanded on earth before humans even existed. And Pennywise brought out the worst of the citizens of Derry. Not the other way around. And the reason he preyed on humans was because their fear could take on so many forms compared to the rather basic fear of animals.

I've read a rumor that IT was written in a 15 hour coke and whiskey bender. No rest, no sleep, just coked out of his mind pounding away at his typewriter for 15 straight hours. King has never stated this was true but never denied it either. I think his answer was something like, "it's possible".
@jonathanw1019
@jonathanw1019 5 жыл бұрын
@@purplegorilla9592 I'd like to believe the coke whiskey bender thing, which could certainly be true, but 1100 pages in 15 hours? That's over a page a minute. If it's whiskey and coke, 15 hours isn't even that long. Let's double or triple that. I could see two days straight. That might actually explain the last 200 pages.

TheICEgirl6100 someone went back and looked at the reviews of the book at the time it was published and they found that that scene was rarely referenced. So weird. I think when the book gained a teenage/YA readership, “the scene” gained the notoriety it has today. (I sure as hell was messed up by it when I read it at 12.) It’s funny. It kinda goes along with the book’s theme of adults not noticing things that kids/teens DEFINITELY pick up on.

Ruby, this novel wasn't written by the character. It was written by King and he is the one who created the very internal logic and premise of the act in the novel you cite as a reason for people not to find it dubious. No. it does not work like that. King is a grown man writing a scene like this in a book and so the complaint is that and not if the character he wrote to want the act is the one who should determine the merit of the act. it's like saying it's okay that a writer creates a scene of abuse because in the novel the character wanted it............oh....wait.

In King's defence, Bev was strangely sexualised throughout the whole book. Bev's description of the perfect donger was the first description I ever read. Her husband is abusive and I vaguely remember a scene with Bev and her dad that made me _wait wut_ as well as the sewer incident.. and maybe also gossip that she might be a bit of a ho? Then again, I also remember that Henry covers his belly button because Henry is a big boy and there are probably other unnecessarily sexual scenes or undertones at times. Perhaps King is confused about we fixate on just that ONE scene, when there's plenty of others to choose from too. Other than a disturbing layer of character development, the sexual stuff doesn't really add anything of substance to the story so I can see why they would leave it out of retellings. That and the whole 'really creepy' thing. I'd like to think that King was trying to play on invoking visceral disgust in back of the reader's mind, to enhance the fear in the story with some subconscious negative emotions. I'd really like to think that..

Nezzen Our universe was made when that turtle vomitted it out after a stomach ache. Also, that turtle had died by choking on a galaxy by the time the kids grew up. Just saying that it gets weirder.
