When I read an extremely condensed version of this story back in the day, I saw how Doctor Jekyll secretly sought to delve into his baser desires, but couldn't without sacrificing his public standing. So when he made his miracle potion, he used it to take on a new identity with a new face, thus allowing Jekyll to go from his public face (Jekyll) to his alter ego (Hyde) whenever he felt the desire to do wrong. This made me think of how pleasant and nice someone can be in person, but on the internet, where they can hide their Public Faces, can be as wicked and vile to their heart's content with their Alter Egos.

Dope Man Some people believe that he might be based on a Dr. Horace Wells. He was one of the initial discovers on anesthesia, but when he went to present his findings by preforming a dental operation the dosage was administered incorrectly. This lead to him getting ridiculed in front of the audience as he tried to preform the operation. He was eventually ostracized with his reputation completely destroyed. So he quit dentistry and not long after that some one else "discovered" anesthesia. He tried to get credit but was unsuccessful. This eventually lead to him self experimenting inother forms of anesthesia. At the times the effects were unkown, but nowadays we know that they lead to extreme mood swings and sometimes violent behavior. Obviously, this happened to him when he through acid onto two prostitutes one day. He was jailed and eventually sobered up upon which time he committed suicide. Unbeknownst to him at the time, the dentistry community finally decided to recognize him as the founder of anesthesia a week or so before his death.

Hmm, the lesson is a bit wrong, I guess. It would've been more appropriate had the novella gave the conclusion that instead of balancing good and evil, one should prioritise good and evil. So that you have a better idea. If you put good as your first priority, you should act good unless all and everything points out that you are wrong and being bad/immoral is the right path. Sure, the priorities will change throughout the years but it is better than finding balance.

I've always interpreted this book as a classic case of the unreliable narrator. Most of what we know about the Jekyll/Hyde transformation comes from Jekyll's own writings, and he states at the beginning of the book that the most important thing to him is his reputation. The mechanics of the change show inconsistencies, like whether or not the two personalities can access each other's memories, and there's even a point wen Jekyll transforms into Hyde without realizing it, and keeps acting as Jekyll until he becomes aware of the change. The shift in personality is a fictional construct created by Jekyll to absolve himself of his actions when wearing the Hyde mask, thus preserving his reputation.

Here's my theory: I would read "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" as a story about alcohol abuse and addiction. To support this thesis, I present the following arguments: 1. The effects of Jekyll's serum: The serum changes his personality, causing him to disregard all social norms, act like a fool and turn violent. Doesn't that sound like a drunk? 2. The aftermath of Jekyll's serum consumption: Every time Jekyll uses his serum to turn into Hyde, he shows symptoms of nausea, headache, an upset stomach, physical and mental weakness, as well as an overall discomfort. Hangover anyone? 3. The progression of the transformation: While initially, the serum is used to turn Jekyll into Hyde, the amount required gradually increases, until the serum is needed in order to turn Hyde back into Jekyll and ultimately, Hyde takes over entirely. Similarly, a person suffering from an alcohol addiction needs more and more alcohol to get drunk and at some point even needs alcohol in order to function (and thus be "normal"), until everything is lost and they're just wasted 24/7. To conclude, the serum in "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" resembles alcohol both in immediate effects and aftermath, while Jekyll's gradual permanent transformation into Hyde represents the progression of an addiction, making "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" the story of an alcoholic.

May I suggest the fact that this is a brilliant theory? Because it is!

don't know if this was done on purpose, but if you go to 5:15, you can see that the split picture has more of Jekyll than hyde, this can show that Jekyll is more of a better person than a bad one, which adds to the surprise when we find out that Jekyll is hyde.

I find it hard to accept that the novella is saying that we should accept both our bad and good sides. Rather, it seems to be warning that when you try to indulge your bad side it becomes stronger until it threatens to take you over completely. A little similar to the story about there being two wolves inside us that are fighting, and the one that wins is the one you feed.

I wrote a small piece interpreting this text as one suffering drug addiction. Stevenson himself wrote it in like a weekend or something because he was addicted to cocaine (used as a med at the time legally). Without mentioning that, the text references that need for the serum, and also as you mentioned denial. He "kicked the habit" for a little while but then again he turns back into Hyde. I mean to me it is an easy way of looking at this short story, and also love your interpretation!

B) This is Robert Louis Stevenson's second writing of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde The first finished tale was destroyed on purpose I think.
