This is a beautiful palette. Sorry about the one that broke, completely understand your frustration. Just a heads up for anyone watching. American journey (cheap joes brand) makes square porcelain palettes. They come in two sizes and they will go on sale around Black Friday on cheap Joe’s website.

I'm hunting for a new porcelain palette and was glad to see your review come up. I've heard of this palette many times and confess I've been curious about it. While it is beautiful and would be a dream to work with, I fear the heavy weight and size makes it a deal breaker for me. Meeden makes smaller ones that might be a better fit for my small studio space. I'm glad you mentioned the heavy weight of the Quiller palette. I had not realized they were THAT heavy. I wish you happy painting all the same. I can understand your frustration over losing your old palette, especially when you've invested so much time with your tool and that the replacement is costly. I hope the new one has proven to give you joy.

Thanks so much ! Meeden has a dupe of this pallet as well on Amazon for around $35 so I'd suggest giving that one a try ☺️ I've enjoyed their quality and can recommend them .

Great video, love how you chose to break this review down. I’m a faaaaarely new artist (I’ve been doing art “seriously” for about a year), I’m a young artist too, so not only did I learn about the palette but also about what to look for when I get a palette. If that’s regarding when I’m actually looking for a palette or when I’ve already gotten my palette, I’ve learned what to look for. I love that there are so many artists on KZbin, because I can learn so much from everyone and everyone has something different to teach. If some youtubers don’t talk about a certain thing I can usually find it on another channel or somewhere else online. But it can be hard to look for things I don’t know to look for, if that makes sense. So I love when people make pretty thorough reviews about products, and thorough videos overall. Anyway, I enjoyed this video very much😁 thank you so much!

Thank you for this video! I want to buy this, but I can't seem to find out if the bottom of wells are sloped/slanted or not. I get mixed answers on the internet. Can you please confirm if the bottom of the wells is slanted....I am asking because I want to be able to put a glob of paint on the shallow side, spray it with some water and then the diluted paint wash can pool in the deep end. Would this work for this palette? Thank you!
@nicolemartinart5819 Жыл бұрын
Yes this palette would work for that effect . There is a barrier at the end of each well which will keep your paint from spilling out into the mixing area and also keep mixes from splashing up and contaminating your colors. They are slightly slanted but the raised barrier certainly will keep it divided. I don't find them to be majorly slanted though like some other palettes I've owned. Hope this helps .

And the day after I received it I saw the one on Jerry's on super sale. Also with the lid. The Meeden one also had the lid. I have seen some artist here on You tube who said theirs did not come with a lid when they bought theirs.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear what happened to your old palette. I have a question about the accident: did you successfully saved the watercolours pigments when the ceramic went in pieces (to move them in a new palette)? Thx for your attention
@renmuffett4 жыл бұрын
I have had my Stephen Quiller palette for many years and its wonderful. I love that its round. I'm so sorry your first was was destroyed in an accident. I would scream too! I have mostly Schmincke in mine and some have been in there for many years, dried hard as can be yet re-wets instantly. That's what I love about Schmincke. They don't have to be gummy to re-wet instantly. Even Cerulean re-wets instantly. I have a lot of M Graham also, since it was my 1st professional paint over 15 years ago. Denise Soden, called, " In Liquid Color, on KZbin tested her Prussian Blue from M Graham and it faded drastically. She put it in the dark also to see if the color regained itself and it did not. She showed the samples she tested. Luckily, I was never fond of it anyway and prefer Phthalo's. On the Handprint website, Bruce McCoy tested several Prussian (PB27) pigment brands and they are risky because they can be fugitive to lightfast. You never know what you will get. They are mostly staining but not as bad as the Phthalos.

Thanks . I think I'll only use it in my sketchbook no professional work. Sad it's such a historic hue. Oh well I respect and love my fans too much to sell anything that may not be completely stable . Now I want to try schminke paints lol . They have such soft buttery pastels
@renmuffett4 жыл бұрын
The 1st watercolor I put in my Steven Quiller palette, was M Graham. I put the foam seal around the lid too. I let my paint dry as much as M Graham can dry in two weeks. However because my lid was too air tight, my M Graham watercolor began to mold. I had only put the palette away for a week and opened it up to find mold. It was bad. I had to soak my palatte in the bathtub to get it clean. So much wasted paint! This is why I switched to Schmincke. It won't mold if sealed when paint is damp. I have since learned that if you just cover MGraham and not seal it so the paint can breath and stay dry as possible, it won't mold. I ripped the seal off my palette lid. Watercolor palettes do not need to be sealed tight unless its a travel palette. Studio palettes only need a loose dust cover. So I love the floppy loose lid the way it is. I'm taking no chances. But I agree that huge signeture is aweful! LOL!
@nicolemartinart58194 жыл бұрын
Wow I'm so sorry you had to waste all that paint . Luckily I live in a pretty dry climate and I've never had any issues with mould in my m Grahams . The honey is a natural antimicrobial and helps to starve off the growth . I always leave the lid kinda half off when the paints are drying so the air can circulate through . M Graham paints really are my favorite . I've tried so many brands but find I'm always disappointed with them compared to m Graham. They are just so saturated . I'm thinking I might try the schminke now that you have so highly recommended them . They are one of the few brands I've yet to try. If I do pick some up I'll definitely do a review.
@renmuffett4 жыл бұрын
@@nicolemartinart5819 Yes, my climate was humid at that time at the Olympic Peninsula. My palette was way too well sealed 24/7 too. But moved back to Eastern Oregon thank goodness where its dry. I replaced much of my M Graham paint because some of them I still cannot live without. They have the best blues ever! One of the reasons I like Schmincke is because they are not as staining as M Graham. The reason for the extreme staining is because M Graham has the highest pigment load than any other brand with honey according to tests on handprint. If you start with M Graham, it spoils you for that pigment load. Schmincke is the most finely ground paint and layers more times without lifting than any other I've tried, so I can build up my richness of color without lifting. So it depends on your technique if you would enjoy Schmincke or not. Its also more expensive. Then I also have a fondness for Holbein because the colors are so clean and fresh looking. They stain the least of any other brand and that's what I use for my infant portraits. Its easier to rescue my goof ups. Happy painting! Your work is the best I've seen in KZbin for a long time.
@nicolemartinart58194 жыл бұрын
Marks thanks so much for the detailed reply. Oh I totally agree about m Graham having the best pigment load but they do stain as you say and I notice alot of artists use far too much and find them hard to handle . But they are my favorite. I was wondering if you knew about the light fast info on the reds by schminke. What's held me off from trying them is another artist told me they use fugitive vat dye for their reds and that makes me nervous . I know they do in their pastels sadly though their reds are the most luscious and so beautiful. Thank you for the compliment on my artwork !!! It means more to me than you could ever know .

I wS thinking the same about the signature on the lid too. Mine says Meeden on the lid but tgat does not bother me at all because it's an art supply manufacturer not only an artist we ho by contract slaps their name on the same "meeden" pallete, and then charges 2 times much.

Have you seen anyone who makes the porcelain flower palettes with a lid, or have a good solution for covering them? I've been experimenting with limited trios and they are just perfect for that, but I would like to be able to store them with the paint intact.

I've not seen any with a lid but you could try cling wrap or plastic wrap . I love porcelain flower dishes . Oh another suggestion. .. sometimes the groceries stores or pet stores will sell rubber lids to stretch and fit over cat food cans to keep them fresh .. you could try something like that . Good luck and let me know how it works out for you

@@nicolemartinart5819 ooh, the pet food cover is a great idea thank you. I think I have seen something similar for people food storage as well. Why are you obsessing about Quiller's name? This is an extraordinary palette. I have one and love everything about it, even the loose top. It keeps dust out, but allows the paint to dry out between uses so it doesn't mold. Quiller invented it, let him have what is due him. When you invent a palette of this quality put your own name on it and be proud.
@nicolemartinart58194 жыл бұрын
First ... I'm not obsessing ... second this is my channel and my review so ofcourse I'm entitled to my opinion and to say whatever I want . When you have your own channel you can review it however you like. The name is huge a garish across the front . And if that wasnt enough it's even larger across the back . Like alot of people who purchased this palette I'm not happy about that . it's a turn off . That all being said had you watched the review till the end you would have realized this is my second purchase of it and I did give it a favorable review . And I highly recommended it . I know people who have since purchased it because of my review .

@@nicolemartinart5819 for real, geez, I feel like these days people emblazon their name, whether it be an individual or a company, on EVERYTHING!!! It’s so frustrating because it’s getting to the point where you have to literally hunt for items that aren’t emblazoned with another human being’s name or logo or company name. I’m sure Mr. Quiller is proud of the palette he invented and it maybe wasn’t even his idea to put his name on the cover in such a big font, but either way, YOU RISK OTHER PEOPLE BEING TURNED OFF OF THE PRODUCT WHEN YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN MASSIVE LETTERS ON ANYTHING!! The palette was invented by Quiller but I’m assuming it wasn’t intended for him, it was intended for his customers to put to good use. NO ONE IS TRYING TO JACK THE MAN OF THE CREDIT HE IS DUE, not in the slightest. God man, don’t even get me started on how clothes, specifically t-shirts, these days are literally just a cheap ass basic t-shirt with a company’s logo or someone else’s name emblazoned across the front. Quiller’s name on the front of this is in that same spirit, but I’ve always felt like anybody who proudly wears another human being’s name or company name across their chest so proudly is just an absolute moron. Besides all of this, it’s your channel so you can do as you please you are 100% correct.
