I don't know if you know this already Stephen since it's my first time watching this, but the red shells will only hit you directly at the back. The reason you got hit in Dry Dry Ruins is because since Double Dash!!, Red Shells can go through the Fake Item Block. It was only in Mario Kart 64 that they can be used for defense.

If you shake the wii remote you will not get completely stop from POW blocks. You might be able to do it by pressing the d pad on a gamecube controller but i don't know

The Fake Item Boxes don't block shells (Kind of stupid imo) And when you select solo or team race in multiplayer, go up to options at the top and select 'In Order' and '4 Races', so you dont have to select the races manually.

By the way, ever since Double Dash, Fake Item Boxes do NOT block on-coming shells, ever. So holding a fake item box on your butt is basically useless unless you want a second item, or have a tail-gater.

Theyre both using Gamecube Controllers and Mal has done tricks before but it is a but harder to do on a gc controller because you have to use the dpad

Not to mention, they're pretty much an obvious "avoid me" obstacle, having a clearly different appearance than normal item boxes. I love the ones from 64, where the only way to tell real ones from fake ones apart, was the upside down question mark. I love those kinds of subtleties. Now you see that it's a fake one from a mile away, and it's not as interesting like that imo..
