Upon rewatching this, I think I understand why Stephen never changed the Rules: He may have glanced at the corner seeing the "Rules" icon and thought "This'll tell us how to play, which we already do" without realizing that's how you customize the rules.

You can't get affected by your teammate's items. and you can set the difficulty of the AI difficulty or have no AI at all (in multiplayer) in the rules you can set yourself

Yes, after doing a little bit of research, I can confirm that you can turn off CPUs in the settings for battle. This is closest you can get to the original format of battle games, but Wii rule still apply (after losing three balloons, you lose a point, and you get three more balloons). BUT, you both can just play until one of you loses all three of your balloons and end the game there! I think that's a good idea!

at the screen in 0:19 you can click the rules button at the top right and they should let you change the settings. Idk if it is ever mentioned later in the video btw

Also, you can turn off computers to make it 1 on 1, but the courses are usually too big for it to work, since they were basically made for 12 people at a time

I know this is really late but it really irritates me how they did not realise that you lose a point when you lose all three balloons. There is no friendly fire in Mario Kart Wii.

I could swear that you could turn CPUs off in the settings. When you go to select what type of battle you want, go to settings, and there should be four options for the CPU: easy, normal, hard, and off.

I like chain chomp wheel a lot, cause the opponents mainly travel in a circle, so you end up hitting someone every time you throw a fake item block down at some point.

Stephen, you've gotta start placing bananas and Death Cubes (fake boxes) on top of real item boxes to confuse the other team. :D A hidden banana is easier to run into than one out in the open.

When you lose all three balloons, you lose a point, no matter what. If a teammate hits you, nothing happens. The item just goes away. Also, when you hit someone with a mushroom, it doesn't steal a POINT. You just take a balloon. And, you can trick off of the thwomp's waves in the desert level.

In the event of a tie you should do a best of 3 winner takes all of all 3 rainbow roads to decide who wins.

You will not lose a point for running into your teammate's items. Running into them just destroys them robbing your team members of possible points. You lose a point if you lose all three balloons. And most important: FAKE ITEM BOXES DO NOT BLOCK OTHER ITEMS.

You can't get hit by team items. T All items have an aura around them. They lose the aura after thirty seconds or so, it's when they lose the aura and you get hit by them, that's when you lose a point.

You lose a point for having a balloon stolen, having all of your balloons popped, or I guess being blown up (bomb or blue shell). You might lose a point if you drive off the stage, too.

Nope! The only way you can lose points is by losing all your balloons, and in this game, you only lose one point. However, an opponent steals a balloon from you if they make direct contact with you using a mushroom or a star (not mega mushroom).
