In his address to the IIEA, Professor Walt argues that COVID-19 will have lasting implications for world politics, even after the pandemic is finally over. While the pandemic will not transform the central features of the international system, in his view it will accelerate a number of trends that were underway beforehand. He also provides an analysis of the shift in power toward Asia and reflects on some of the consequences of a retreat from all-out globalisation.
About the Speaker:
Professor Stephen M. Walt is Robert and Renée Belfer Professor of International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Professor Walt was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in May 2005 and received the International Studies Association’s Distinguished Senior Scholar award in 2014. His books include The Origins of Alliances, which received the 1988 Edgar S. Furniss National Security Book Award, Revolution and War and Taming American Power: The Global Response to U.S. Primacy which was a finalist for the Lionel Gelber International Affairs Book Award and the Arthur Ross Book Prize. His book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy (co-authored with John J. Mearsheimer) was a New York Times best-seller and has been translated into more than twenty foreign languages. His latest book is The Hell of Good Intentions: America’s Foreign Policy Elite and the Decline of U.S. Primacy.

Can’t argue against most of this, but, as a European, I do wonder who would have more to lose if the US walked away from NATO..? Firstly, who should we Europeans fear..? The Russians - no, as Walt says, why should we fear a state with a GDP less than Italy? Yes, they have a powerful military, but the idea of Russians marching up the streets of Barcelona and Glasgow is not credible. The Chinese - also not credible. On the other hand if a Euro army is formed, it could act as a bulwark against these powers - as well as the Americans. NATO is a US asset, only a fool threatens to destroy his own asset.

America never had an advanced medical system, even before the pandemic we all knew the medical system in America was screwed up, the whole world knew it! We pay the most for medical but we have the worst cure rate than ANY other country. I believe that to be because America thinks chemically poisoning their patients will cure them which it's just temporary and causes other illnesses while other nations even 3rd world countries use natural medicines. America's medical system isn't a health care system, it's a business system and it's always been that way. You can try and argue this all you want but you're wrong and I'm right. Im not debating this just pointing out statistical facts.

Maybe to cure would halt a revenue stream?

@@sprobablycancr4457 indeed it would, a lot of money would be out of the pockets of so called doctors that can only read a kindergarten chart and if it's not on the kindergarten chart then the patient must be ok,, bill them and kick em out

"The world all needs to work together the pandemic is evidence of this." How can that possibly be a reasonable conclusion? Countries have all had to fight for their interests against each other to look after their people. Nobody would elect a leader unwilling to fight for the people. The only way to conclude trying to work together as a plant is the answer based on the pandemic is to have started with that as your answer and not think about it.
