At any rate, the league has too many teams; the conferences are too large; there are more divisions and fans have lost connectivity and familiarity. I think what the poster really misses is how much more meaning the All-Star game had when it was east vs west- its players caring and competing and seeing Jordan, Bird and Barkley on the same team competing against Magic, Olajuwon and Karl Malone on the same team. But pitting east vs west now wouldn't bring that back.

That would definitely make the game better to watch. Playing the game according to analytics have made it dreadful to watch- the viewership numbers make that abundantly clear. Unintended consequences: analytics have reduced the game to shooting threes and getting to the rim. So most teams play the same style and the same offensive strategy has been analyzed to such detail that the free flow AND VARIETY of styles/strategies have been almost eliminated. So just getting better at a specific skill doesn't make a better game. It has reduced the game to specific skills competition.

I had watched the 1998 NBA All-Star game on KZbin last night. You had Michael Jordan, who was on his final NBA run; Kobe Bryant in his second All-Star game, and so many other NBA greats on one court. There was a perfect balance of competitiveness and entertainment. Michael showing his dominance. Kobe showing his ability to become one of the future NBA greats, and Isaiah Thomas said it best when it came to the NBA All-Star game: the stars are out there to deliver the “oohs” and “aahs”.

This man (Adam Silver)and his schemes have singlehandedly degraded the NBA product. He forces BS on the fans cause he thinks the way that he envisions the NBA is what we want. This player friendly approach is like letting the prisoners run the asylum. It will never work long term. The fact these players are making generational wealth in less than 5 years and yet don't want to compete at the highest level is beyond me. They don't want to complete their contracts at their respective teams, lack competition and rivalry, no defense, don't want to compete in the dunk contest, high stakes gambling and bad refereeing, load management is the norm as well as teams purposely tanking. Salary cap restrictions keeping teams from getting better and player movement is all coming in with this commissioner. He is trying to also make the league more appealing to a worldwide audience by elevating European players more and trying to force the main players out of the picture early which is Curry, Durant and Lebron. The NBA is American and that is who it should be catered to, an American audience. Curry is still the main draw of the league right now and shouldn't be forced out. Durant and Lebron are still playing at the highest level. The Anthony Edwards, Ja Morants and the Zion Williamsons are not ready to be the future of the NBA. Check out all of their off the court antics. And the fact all three of these guys should be in the dunk contest makes me wonder why are they still brand ambassadors. If you have a shoe then go out and promote on All-Star weekend. I would think their agents would advise them better. This commissioner is making rules trying to even the playing field rather than let things work itself out. The best times in the NBA was when there was rivalries: Lakers vs. Celtics, Bulls vs. Detroit, Golden State vs. Cleveland. I want a more athletic and competitive league. Bring the celebrations and the taunts, that will make it more competitive. Let players play defense instead of calling fouls on defensive players who don't initiate contact. I want to see the best possible product on the floor even if it ain't but 4 teams, I don't care. I don't want to see 25 mediocre teams, the rest of the league will catch up. Contracts need to be non guarnteed so these athletes will take the game and their bodies seriously. Or make the contracts shorter, but the way it is heading now is gonna rival the pre Caitlyn Clark WNBA. I don't like the way the women in the WNBA are bullying CC but it is more interesting and more competitive in WNBA which is one of the reasons it has increased in popularity.

The problem with the all star game and the NBA in general is that winning is not what matters the most anymore, but stats are. Therefore, the competitive nature heavily decreased and being friend with everyone became the norm. Players don't have as their number one priority showing that they are the best by competing against each other on both ends of the floor and beating the best to estabilish themselves as the alpha of the league. When you have that type of mindset I'm coming for you I'm gonna make you quit, i'm gonna score on you and lock you down on the other end of the floor, you can't be that close to that guy like being best friend hanging out with each other and all that.

"Fans play players" sounds cute- but, in reality it is too simplistic. It simply isn't true. Its like telling a congressman, "You work for me!" Bullshit- try firing the congressman, then. You only have a vote; that's it. The fact that viewership is down markedly and the new tv broadcast rights deal is up markedly, belies the notion that fans play players in any real sense.

At this point we should do what the world does for Car services (Uber), Food services (Uber eats, restaurants, etc), App services (Apple & Android store), Delivery services (Amazon, FedEx, etc)…. The time and date might be the issue. Instead of having it mid season and risk a player getting injuired before play offs, have it in the summer time when fans are excited for the season to start.
