I don't know as for the musicians in other countries, but in Russia they say "the slower you try - the faster you master".

loved how well you stuck to the swing groove even when you slowed it way down, it's easy to lose the sound when things get slow

My old drum teacher was fond of this expression which he claimed was said by Yoda (but I'm pretty sure he just made it up). "Slowly you will learn quick."

Great lesson, I think I had Chapin's Syncopation book 35 years ago? I probably still have it somewhere. Thank you.

Great lesson man! I tell my students all the time “SLOW DOWN”! You can dissect and learn nearly anything if you begin very slowly. Cudos!

Hey, great video as always! It's true that you've gotta practice something really really slow to be able to play it fast. What I did was play the drum intro for John The Fisherman by Primus over and over again to get better kick drum control and it worked for me! Will try this excercise as well.

That is a great song to practice kick on.

One of my main tips for pedal speed is a perfect seating position, so my leg is exactly 90 degrees and falls directly over the pedal and a real focus on isolating those ankle muscles with the heel up. IMO opinion, as someone who is fairly proficient in heel toe on my left foot for slashing the hi-hats, it’s just not all that worth while for the kick, slide will get you just as much speed with much less effort. Just check out Eric Moore and Stan Bicknell if you want some master classes on foot speed. Different strokes for different folks though. I can get so much power out of an inch of movement. I was always really into doubles so just developed over time and was lucky that the technique I accidentally developed was slide foot. Can’t say the same about my hands, I’ve only just started learning about fulcrum and push-pull in the last couple of months, thanks to people like you and Stephen Taylor after 11 years of drumming. The improvement to my playing has just been amazing and frankly I quite enjoy spending time with a practice pad now. You guys are really the pinnacle of education. Thank you!

It's really cool that Jim Chapin is, and will be relevant for as long as people play drums. I had the honor to hang out with him a couple times. He picked out my first "pro" level snare. Where I'm from all the top drummers I know of studied with him. I was young, and not as into the technical part as I am now. Great guy! I never did pick up his book, but it's long over due. Thanks for vid. Playing, and learning books is where it's at!

Hi Stephen! Great vid. I agree slow is the best way to learn difficult patterns. I teach my students the same way. If you can nail it slow, the speed and fluidity will come with steady, correct practice.

A video idea. How about one for those of us who have never played a 1/16 note on the bass drum. How do you begin working in the e's and a's ?

Yup..this is old school, alright... Alot like Judo where you go through the various moves slowly, deliberately and with care to precision..do it repeatedly.. seemingly forever... and the speed will come soon after... "Training is Endless!" Such is the case with Judo (or any other martial art worth it's name) and so it is with drums.
