I started playing when I was 14 or 15? Took a couple of crap lessons here and there, and I have played, terribly, for many, many....many, many years. Now, at 49, I am trying to learn rudiments for the first time...I'm trying to set up my gear better....I'm trying to put focus back into this, and correct a bunch of old bad habits. It's not like starting from scratch, because I've had sticks in my hands for a long time...but, I was not doing them any justice, and my whole world was RLRLRLRL I'm not necessarily staring from scratch, but, at times, it does feel that way. I've watched several of your videos, and your exercises really do help. There's an added dimension above the knowledge, and it is in the delivery. Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to put these video exercises together, and sharing a really smooth, and genuine teaching vibe. I've been a flight instructor for 20 years, so I can relate to the teaching thing, and what I've learned is that it doesn't matter what you teach, if you love to teach. I feel like you genuinely want me to be a better, and more complete drummer, and I don't even freaking know you. LOL. That's awesome! Thanks again for the free help! #olddognewsticks

As a former drum corps snare drummer, I wish I'd had this lesson when I first started to play a lot of set. different application; different feel. "Flow" was something I definitely had to develop. This exercise would have immediately built it in. Your lessons are always thoughtful and creative, and you know how to help people learn to PLAY musically. Your communication skills are off the charts. You are the BEST on the internet, man. Thanks!

I've enjoyed and gotten a lot out of a lot of Rob's videos recently. This one may be my favorite so far. After the first time I worked on it, I felt generally better on the kit already. And the coaching on how to approach it and execute captures a lot of wisdom.

I play a "kinda" fast genre of metal. Not extreme but hovering between 190 and 220 bpm. I can't preach enough how much this type of exercise, especially played at slower tempos, helps my playing. If you put a spy camera in my rehearsal room for the last year, you'd rarely see me play anything faster than 140-160 bpm when I'm practicing and I spend most of my time in the 80-120 range. This gives my brain a chance to focus on breathing, relaxation, control, proper motion, dynamics, etc. And all that has been carrying over and seeping into my actual band rehearsals where I've gone from needing a breather after three songs to playing our whole set, taking a break and playing it again.

I just love this explanation. it makes drumming accessible to all levels. New comers and old guards can learn something new or learn to approach it in a different way. whether you are in a band or hitting pots and pans until you finally have a few bucks to spare for your first kit. This video makes me feel part of a community

Dude, that is a sweet lesson! I got into your videos the other day when I searched for help with my double stroke roll (which was a good lesson too btw). I watched this video about 30 mins ago and since then got the excercise down at 60bpm for a few continuous minutes, then successfully played it at 70, 80 and 90bpm for a few continuious minutes! Which is awesome cuz it's hard for me to accomplish that! It's only 9am so I have to play quiet not to bother my neighbors, which made the lesson even better for me. Gonna take a break for a few mins and let it sink in and come back to it and get it up to 120bpm and then work on the 1 to 10 range. It's a strange feeling 3 or 4 mins into the excercise - as you get further along in the groove, things seems to slow down and one can really pay attention to the dynamics and accents, almost like it's moving in slow motion. Then I really have to listen for the metronome so I don't speed up, which I tend to do. This excercise is perfect for me to hold a tempo over a period of time when I deviate from the groove to a drum fill, which is prob my biggest struggle. So this really accomplishes a lot by working on holding tempo and a fill pattern for 5 mins! Great idea man! Diggin your style!

What’s is up my brother? I have been questioning my flow lately and then you release this exercise. Reason why my flow had been lagging, is that I have learned so much from you, that I seem to want to play everything every time. Here lately I have no rhyme or reason and no flow. You just opened my eyes once again to using a simplistic pattern, with dynamic feel to allow and instill a natural rhythm. Rob your the best my brother! I will update you in 2 weeks on my progress. Have a wonderful day!🤜

Super Thanks Indeed! Ron this lesson completely rounds out so many facets to my playing. I am 59 and have been paying since 11 and man this was challenging to get down at first but man I am on this everyday to keep the discipline this takes to take it to the next level. Always struggled with off beat independence on the bass drum but man even this keeping the one bass note perfectly timed. Got it at 120 BTM but had some kick misses so that’s my challenge but sticking was solid. Also working in the same off beat hi hats or double triple on the bass drum will only add more musicality to the entire development. This is day one of trying this exercise but truly this will be my go too on a daily basis. I have watched probably 50 of your videos so far and man I am just so thrilled to the progress. Man just a joy to have landed on system. Thank you!
