To be fair, the official name for rocks is "ore", but we've always called them rocks (since they were first introduced to us that way). As for trading before building, that's actually not in the rules (at least in the current version)-check your Almanac for "Combined Trade/Build Phase". Apparently they're separated to help people learn the game, but ultimately recommend combining them, allowing you to do them in any order, any number of times. You might have an older version, though.

Stephen, you should get expansions for Settlers of Catan. They really make the game even better, sometimes longer. In my opinion Cities & Knights is the best one, it adds a whole new mechanic and changes some things a little.

It is usually interesting listening to others' interpretations of the cards. My family says iron ore instead of rocks, wood instead of logs, sheep, wheat, and brick. Also, my parents are very strict to the rules, so when Emile built and then traded 4 for 1 for resources (all trading before building), they would have said NOPE NOPE NOPE, but everyone plays a little differently. Anyways, fun game to watch :D
