Another difference I think should be worth to point out in 'Mike's Whistle', is that when the author describes Mike's safety valve to 'blow off', he didn't literally mean it broke. My experience in railway terms indicates that, when the boiler's steam pressure builds up at the start of the day, a blast of steam from the safety valve indicates simply that the engine has reached full working pressure to start away. Mike's driver, upon noting this in result of Mike being anger-triggered (though one is left to speculate just how the engine's face can trigger an effect on their boiler), notes that he is the first to be able to leave the shed. While the TV series' perspective is also applicable, I wanted to explain the real intention of the author. Regards, Samuel Farris.
