My wife and I enjoy watching your videos during lunch and we both thought it would be fun if you two found 2 island girls to take along with you.😁 Luke you are so right about today's navigational aids being so important to safety. How did those sailors do it 100 years ago when they didn't even have engines to carry them into a strange bay? Amazingly Brave they were. The new anchor chain is great and Atlas looks terrific all cleaned up.

Women on boats are bad luck. Almost as bad as bananas. How did the people navigate around the Pacific over 5000 years ago. Wayfinding is fascinating.

Ha! Bananas! I just think our lads might be a bit lonely. It is amazing how the early people got around. How did they know that if they set off in a certain direction for so many hours or days that they would come across an island? How did they find their way back to their home island. It is incredible but how many were lost in the trying? @@julianbatcheler9970

Wow. Great Video. Thanks. Yeah, ground tackle is VERY critical to cruising life. That is if you like to sleep at night. Or at all. And yes, as I started cruising around 1968, and GPS didn’t come out for private use till 1989. I had to use celestial nav, and ded reconning combined with costal piloting when near enough to land. A great tool for coming into anchorages at night if they weren’t too tricky with reefs etc, was a quality pair of marine binoculars like Fujinon or Steiner. They help night vision a lot. But indeed it was tricky and limited compared with today. It took MUCH more knowledge and skill to navigate. When chart plotters and accurate charts came out cruising became much more popular. And yes, in 1989 I stood in line to buy a little black box that magically gave 2 sets of numbers on a display. And as all satellites weren’t up yet you only got those 2 numbers Lat and Lon about half the time. And you still had to plot on very inaccurate paper charts. We had this magic for a mere $5700, adjusted for inflation. And it was money well spent. Cheap insurance.
@TheSailingBrothers
@TheSailingBrothers Жыл бұрын
Thanks Fred really appreciate it. We sleep much better now knowing our anchor chain is not going to fail. Can't really imagine what it would be like to sail around the world without all these modern GPS technology and charts. Sounds scary and complicated. Very expensive for such limited technology wow true sailor 🙏

I agree with your thoughts on navigation and think often the same when I sail ! However, we have lost the skills the ancient Polynesians had, since they could accurately sail 100’s of miles and more using the stars, wave patterns, types of birds, and other clues... but Magellan didn’t have a clue where he was heading when he entered the straights... 😱 Thanks as usual for sharing ! 😎

Lads, when you get a chance, purchase 100 feet of ⅜” polypropylene line and secure it to the last link in your chain. Secure the other end of the line down in the anchor locker. This will provide a bed for the chain to set on and allow air to circulate and dry things out after raising the anchor. In addition, if you ever have to ditch the anchor, you let the chain run free, pulling all the line out. Then you cut the line. The polypropylene will float, thus allowing you to return to retrieve the anchor.

Did you get to tie a anchor snubber… will save on link wear when all the weight holding the boat is on the chain at the capstan, less strain on the capstan too as it splits the load into two ropes tied off cleats. Paint some links with different colours to indicate meters, 10, 20, etc. Do you have a drain in the locker?

Bored and fed up… and your uploads are a bright moment. Thank you. And the Polynesians were exploring the Pacific 2000 years before the first Viking explorations. People navigated long distances 5000 years ago on the Pacific. It’s mind boggling. Funnily enough the Disney film Moana, which is accurate to Polynesian culture, covers some of how they navigated. And remember there is no Southern version of the North star. The game they are playing is a French import called petanque… it’s big in France. (Which I just saw you wrote on the screen). We used to have a set. So with the new chain you don’t subscribe to the idea of attaching the anchor chain with rope? So it can be chopped through in an emergency and you could come back later for the chain and anchor. My cousin always has his like that. I have no idea which is more usual.

Feels good to brighten your moment 😄 That is an amazing Rich history here in French Polynesia. They were exploring the islands long long ago on hollowed out trees crazy. Did you play the game much? We are in fact going to change and put a road on the end of the anchor chain in case we have to drop it all in an emergency. Fantastic idea Julian 😁💯

Great video yet again guys. I think it is good practice to support chandlers in obscure places, helps keep them going and you never know when you might need them. How do you attach the end of your chain at the boat end?
@TheSailingBrothers
@TheSailingBrothers Жыл бұрын
It is good to support local businesses, we have done our bit I guess 😁. The end of the chain is on a shackle bolted to the inside of the anchor chain locker

@@TheSailingBrothers thanks for reply. You must be really busy doing all these replies. You guys are absolutely brilliant with your sailing and are an inspiration to all sailing enthusiasts. You may already thought about this and have a different perspective on what I am going to say, if you need to slip your anchor and chain in a rush your only options with your set up would be to pull all the chain up or break the chain or undo the shackle. It may be an idea to have the end of the chain attached to a piece of rope that is attached inside the chain locker. The rope should belong enough to come up on deck so as you can cut through and let the anchor and chain go completely. Just a thought and hope it helps.

Walking a bit funny these days Boys, with the cost of the new chain. Arm & a leg job.🤣 But what cost a life or two, or a boat. Does the anchor locker have a drain, or just a weep hole into the bilges ? Mud is the biggest culprit I find. I rigged a poor mans anchor wash using a small Rule pump, and 15 M of 12V bell wire. It worked quite well, and kept the nasty niffs getting too bad in the locker. You are in a gorgeous place tho', so rugged and green. (no not you two) 😂😂Kind Regards, Bernie SW Wales UK 👍👍

We are walking a bit strange now Bern 😂😂😂😂. The locker has a drain at the lowest point into the bilge. Needs to be kept clear! Would love a hose to wash the chain very posh nosh 😁. It is beautiful here 🤩
