Setting up a warehouse has scientific steps to be followed. If any of it is missed, it shall have an adverse effect on your operations, in the form of either slow down or repetitiveness of tasks.
Lets understand the key 04 steps to be followed one after the other
Step 01
Analyze the space requirement
Based upon your services and business plan or vision for next 02 years, decide the space requirement
Order volumes and size of your products must be considered while deciding the space size
You need to determine the average packaging size of each product category, volume of each category, the number of products the racks can hold, the Purchase Turnaround Time, the height of the racks, the isle space and most importantly your SALES.

There, you go: now you know the exact space required for your warehouse
Do not forget to account for buffer space in case of exceptional rise in orders or bulk purchases to be made
Step 02
Build your Warehouse Layout
Define the macro layout in terms of the entry, exit, flow of goods, flow of people, etc.
Then come to the functional areas like your Inward Area, Outward Area, Damaged Goods Area, Scrap Area, Utility Area etc. We also have shared a very interesting concept called “Zoning”, for your warehouse. You must go through in our video dedicated to designing a warehouse layout, if you are still in the planning stage.

Step 03
Finalize the WMS system
In the 1970s, with the development of computers and mainframes, came the first generation of Warehouse Management Systems
Warehouse Management System is the key to manage inventory within your warehouse
Key features to look for, in an efficient WMS are:
Inbound operations i.e. receiving, gate entry, purchase inwards and put-away
Outbound operations i.e. order receiving, pick list, packing labels, invoicing and dispatch
Avoid re-inventing the wheel, by building your customized WMS system.
Today WMS has been evolved to support highest level of automation and each size and scale of warehouse.

Step 04
Define SOPs
Warehouse team cannot operate without well-defined SOPs
SOPs must be defined once you have finalized the WMS system, to ensure your SOPs are system-driven & easy to implement
