@@LifeofBliss What is your thinking about using Birch plywood versus the MDF? Also would double thickness 3/4" sheets overkill?
@LifeofBliss10 ай бұрын
I think double thickness on the whole box is overkill and just adds excess weight. Bracing every 8-10 inches will provide enough strength to keep box resonance to a minimum. Using plywood would save weight, but costs much more. Plus the end grain will need a little work to prep before painting

You're right about the rollers... its much better to spray. But a couple tips I have regarding the finish of Duratex with rollers... Use a 9" roller with a very thin foam profile, the little rollers are only good for small speakers and tight areas. Coat evenly without worrying about the streaks, wait 5-10 minutes (less in hot/dry environment), then roll in one direction only, overlapping about an inch as you go. Avoid extending past the edges with your roller and avoid pressing down near the edges. That will squeeze out the duratex from the foam roller unevenly and will create streaks when you go back over your work. If there are still streaks, wait a bit longer and then repeat the process, but roll in a direction 90 degrees to how you did your first "smoothing" rolls. The thin foam roller will hold less duratex and you wont waste as much when its time for cleanup. Great job, love seeing the build.

He's using class D (digital) amps. They all sound like $hit compared 2 regular ol' 'analog' amps like 'Class A/B' =) Even with a 'Class H' switching power supply. It's funny he spend all that $$$ on all those huge things & is complaining not getting the 'slam' he wanted, when a mere 2 X 18" PA drivers slam like crazy if U put them in big ported enclosures with just a couple hundred watts a side! This whole thing is an exercise in WA$TE!! Like 'bragging' that they WA$TE so much energy as heat, which U don't even get into the room because it's trapped in the cabinet & dissipates over many hours. & that's another thing = mount drivers so the magnets & stuff R on the OUTSIDE & things will last longer & throw better = nice cool air so less 'power compression' from hot coils =) There R so many things wrong it's just sad, but that's how $cams work in 'audiophelia' LOL

You have it right about having lots of compressor if you are painting. Many years ago I was locking up the body shop I worked at when we heard a rocket-like noise. We were about 200M from an airport runway, so we though it was something there. But when we drove around to see what it was, the noise was coming from our back door! We ran back to the front. We found a 1" PVC air line had pulled out of a fitting, ripped of the wall and wedged against the ceiling. The painter we left in the BlowTherm didn't even notice anything wrong because he was almost deaf and we had 50HP of compressor (a 20 and a 30HP running of of one pressure switch) so even with a 1" hole the pressure stayed high enough that the restrictor at the spray gun was still the limiting factor. Now you don't need 50HP, but you will likely want more than you can run on a 110v circuit.

Damn! Yea bigger is better. I'm used to an 80 gallon 240v tank my dad has in his body shop. I would love to have something like that!

18:00 Your talking about SPL, but your 2 front subs have a very obscured box design, and no tubes or ports. By looking at them i can feel that you are missing out on lower frequencies because of the box design and not having 4 inch pvc tubes.
@LifeofBliss4 жыл бұрын
Do some more reading on sealed enclosures. Box shape has nothing to do with how much spl a speaker outputs on a sealed box. I would be really missing out on low frequencies if these were ported. They'd drop off like a rock under 20 hz ported unless the box was 5x the size. Sealed allows for lower frequencies to still have a high spl

I did the house curve thing and lost a lot of chest thump (50-80 hz) because my subs were focused on playing everything below that, since it was boosted. Everything was tuned flat for the sub and then the entire sub frequency was ran hot compared to the mains.

This reminds me of the automotive subwoofer audio scene in the 80s and 90s. Now it's inside the house! BTW The subs became overpowering.
@NALOW844 жыл бұрын
This is a little bit different than that. Low frequencies at higher levels are much harder to reproduce in a home than in a car and most people either have many subwoofers not all playing full blow all the time and are using a DSP and boosting the very low frequencies (many times subsonic which requires ALOT of subwoofer for significant effect in home)significantly ORRR some people have certain subwoofers handle certain frequencies and others the lower. So basically someone may have 4 - 24" subwoofers that aren't running anywhere near their full output until they get to the subsonic range which is the whole reason for many or large subwoofers, for that tactical feel. So its not really a "overpowering" thing or experience as you would think.

Through the box design or via sweep, have you determined a resonate frequency for the enclosures? And if so, do you have to eq it out to not be overwhelming during playback?

Everything is EQ'd pretty heavily. The subs are either done with a minidsp or with dirac live. They play flat down to 7 hz at over 115 db or over 120 db when you cut them off at about 10 hz.

Lol mostly going for the bass in demo :D I love audio accuracy and insane excess bass is worthless. It often is the issue that bass drowns the other sounds under it.

You need large woofers to reproduce anything under 20 hz in homes. Everything is balanced and EQ'd, this just playes lower and louder than most systems

Hey Kyle! Great video! Awesome job on the subs. Loved the kids in the intro - looks like you've got a couple stars in the making there!! 😂 My guess is you're going with the Yamaha CX-A5200 processor. Keep up the good work man!
