It’s unfortunate people like Steve Bailey are hidden gems amongst Berklee students and bass players. His sense of humor and vibe are pretty unbeatable, when I missed my private evaluation the first dude I talked was basically like “Well, you have to talk to Steve” and he asked where I was from, I told him Daytona, and he immediately started talking about surfing and I thought “Damn this guy’s cool” but I had already submitted transcripts and was planning on leaving, anyway. It was nice to meet Steve Bailey, despite it being briefly in awkward circumstances, I watched bass extremes in high school and one of his solo performances brought me to tears because I was already in the beginning of getting together my Berklee audition piece. It was half his playing and half my own moment of “holy sh** I’m about to be an adult and I’ll be around people this good soon”. For reference, I don’t think anyone’s transcribed the Ray Brown solo I picked as my audition piece before or after. And I transferred, unfortunately. But I got to hear Bruce, my private instructor, describe Mingus’ hand wrap around his when he was a student at Berklee and got to have an interaction with Steve, and ran into Victor Wooten briefly at the Starbucks next to campus, but I had too much anxiety to say anything. Dude looked at me grabbing my coffee and I stared at him for a half second while he was line behind me and I’m pretty sure he knew I was a bassist because I gave that “wait a minute” look. Same with Thundercat when he did a local gig that year, I wish I had the confidence to just start talking to guys like that back then.

Love his articulate story-telling and dry humor. Thank you both! ETA LOVE the story about him learning how to internalize/recreate the clave/tumbao feel after being fired. So much humble wisdom shared in this interview...🙌🏽😘😁💥

Having a player with Steve’s knowledge, talent and wisdom is a huge asset for the framus/warwick family. All my Berklee bassist friends have said he’s a super chill and friendly guy too

I remember when I started out on Bass back in 1974, a friend introduced me to S. Clarke via RTF and was blown away by Stanley. I bought his album and then bought Jaco's album. It was unfathomable that bass could be played with such virtuosity. Anyway, the story is that I never learned Teen Town or any of their songs completely only snippets. I would hear other bass players mimicking the tone and the notes, still do. I was always searching for my own voice and found it for myself at least. Steve Bailey is a lovely guy I hope to meet one day.

Steve bailey was always one of my biggest influences and favorite bassists. Bought the so low solo album and can say with full certainty that I listened to it more than anyone else in the world, start to finish. Again and again. One of my dreams has been to own or play Steve's signature bass.
