@@JohnStockton7459 : I hope you are just joking. "A man among men" is a very well known turn of phrase. It means "an exemplar." One who should be emulated. For example: "He is a king among kings." - would mean that, even among a group of extraordinary people (ALL of them kings), even in this group, he rises to the top, respected by all the other kings as being the BEST of them. "He is a scholar among scholars" - would mean that, at a university with the finest minds around the world assembled, EVEN among this group, he would be respected as the BEST of them, even more learned than the best of them. But the phrase usually does not change forms (king / scholar / etc.), It is almost always just said, "You (or HE) is a man among men." and people are familiar with the meaning.

I am positive I was at the same show as Steve Carrell! It took place in the late 70s, when Carrell was living in Chicago, at the Amphitheatre, a large, defunct exhibition hall. The show was just as he described: thousands of people ringed around a small stage far below, where Steve's broad clowning was the only thing we could enjoy as the crowd's screams of joy blotted out his words. From now on I'm going to brag that Steve Carrell and I once went to see Steve Martin perform.
