American Pharoah punched out tomato cans in his wins and had to hold off the ever dangerous Effenex to win the BC at KEE. CC kicked twice the ass AP ever did. I forgive anyone for what they say when a dick sticks a mic in his face just after a dream of his own collapsed. He owned up a few days later. I haven't picked many derby winners since 2000, but I hammered CC derby day with a cherry on top exacta with (the other CC) Commanding Curve for a nice 3600 hit.

But the Haskell is a million dollars, the 2022 Travers had a $1,250,000 purse; both larger than the Preakness purse. And even with a "lower" purse, there is prestige and increased stud value in winning or placing in any Grade 1 race.

It's even easier when your horse gets to run against a bunch of tired horses that have already been beaten anyways. They said it best on NBC today. Having to race against fresher horses and beating them is what makes these triple crown winners stand out and it's supposed to be hard to win the Triple Crown.

Even though one might say look at American Pharoah winning the triple crown but the fact that this has happened after 37 years is testament that the triple crown race guidelines makes it very difficult for the winner of the Kentucky Derby to win the next two big races especially Belmont. However, these races have a very old tradition and nothing is going to change. Congrats American Pharoah - I am glad to have witnessed history being made in American thoroughbred horse racing.

That's not how it works. The Triple Crown has been around for 100+ years and those horses won it against fresh horses. Just because some sore loser lost he wants a tradition that is a century long to change, nope it will never happen. American Pharoah and Justify proved that against.....wait for it.........FRESH HORSES. Coburn makes owners that put so much blood, sweat, and tears into this industry look ridiculous. Now look at Chrome shipped to Japan because no big name breeders want his pathetic pedigree, they want American Pharoah and Justify. One of American Pharoah's foals even won a Breeders Cup.

Tonalist had EVERY RIGHT to run in the Belmont Stakes. Please, cite the law that entitles a person to a free one million dollar race. While you are at it, please find the official document that states the Triple Crown is a set-up series...because it is not...it's only an ACCOMPLISHMENT that is recognized with a special trophy. Gotta be honest: no championship ever attained was ever obtained by a team that rested the entire process…except for horse racing. In all other sports, you run the gamut to win a title, or you sit out and watch those who did win. In horse racing: sit out the gamut, and then spoil those who did run it. Adjust the rules so you have to qualify the entire way through, and run it.

The sport has been done this way forever. Every TC winner over the last century had to beat fresh competition. That includes the two since Steve Coburn's rant. After the Derby almost every horse is rested. Only about three or four horses make it to the Preakness. If the aforementioned races have different winners it's not uncommon that zero horses race in all three events. If you had it your way the second and third legs would likely have four entrants to as little as one every year. A horse who wins all three would probably face one to three opponents in the Belmont. That would indubitably spell the death of the Triple Crown. Most importantly, the Triple Crown is nothing more than a title. All three races were run for the initial time in different years. They were never meant to be packaged together. They are three separate races. When Sir Barton won all three in 1919 he wasn't called a "Triple Crown winner". It didn't exist then. But, as more horses won these three distinct, difficult races fans were wowed and gave the few horses who won all three a title: Triple Crown winner. But the TC is not and never was an event. It's an honor given to the very few capable of winning three grueling races against predominantly fresh competition.

I understand him, too. He didn't have to apologize. I agree with everything that Coburn said. There would be no fresh horses. I will never see a single Triple Crown winner in my life because of the way it is set up. I thought we are in a free country and allowed to express our opinions. I guess not because people have to talk crap about what Coburn said. But, if someone's horse doesn't get enough points for the KY Derby, that horse and his owners should stay their asses home.

Haylie McCuistion ...That's the problem with the younger fans...they think that the Triple Crown is set up...and, it's NOT!!! It's an ACCOMPLISHMENT that is recognized, BUT it IS NOT set up. Each race is and was established in the state in which it's run because way back when the racing officials/owners,..etc....wanted THEIR home state to have a premier classic race for the finest 3 year-olds in the land. For example, August Belmont developed the Belmont Stakes with the English Derby in mind...he wanted a classic-distance race for Thoroughbreds that were bred to go a distance. The notion of a triple crown did not exist until AFTER Sir Barton won those three races and someone said, "Hey there should be some special recognition for any 3 year old who can win all three classic races in each respective state. It's NOT an entitlement like the younger generation of today is used to getting...ENTITLEMENTS!!! The state of New York is in no way shape or form under any state or federal law to limit who runs in THEIR RACE. This is insane to think that a horse should be entitled to special, modified competition so they can win a triple crown because they are not good enough to achieve the accomplishment the old-fashioned way....BY EARNING IT! When a horse does what Affirmed and Seattle Slew were capable of doing....then you will see a triple crown, until then, Coburn is a perfect example of today's younger generation of lazy, although he's not exactly young but he does feel that he is entitled to something he most certainly IS NOT. You lazy bums want the same award and recognition for doing less than the Champions before had done...taking on everyone...that's the whole poi9nt of the Triple Crown recognition...GET IT????? "Make it easy for me....it's too hard....no fair, there are fresh horses...NO FAIR...Boo Hooo!" Typical entitled, spoiled generation of LAZY BUMS who want it all handed to them on a 24ct gold triple crown platter. Get real.

I AGREE WITH THE GUY, THE TRUE TEST OF THE TRIPLE CROWN IS 3 RACES 3 STATES IN 5 WEEKS. THE TEST OF A TRUE CHAMPION STAYING FIT THE ENTIRE TIME. MANY YEARS AGO YOU ONLY SAW THE SAME HORSES RUNNING ALL 3 RACES.

I don't believe that a horse should run fresh in the Belmont without having run the Derby and the Preakness. This IS the Triple Crown, and all horses should run all 3 races.
