I'm not going to argue the OT goal. I get the rule, & it was a good goal, Avs won fairly. What I don't understand is the leagues consistency with it's rules. In a high stick situation anywhere on the ice, the whistle goes if a member of the offending team touches the puck before the other team. In this situation the puck hits Smith's pad & nullifies the high stick. Switch over to a delayed penalty. The play is blown down if the offending team touches the puck but NOT when a goalie makes a save. We've seen a few calls in this years playoffs that show there's no consistency in the NHL's rules. Consistency would say this goal should have been a high stick as the Avs player touched the puck after the high stick OR on a delayed penalty the play is blown down if the goalie makes the save
@metalheadcol2 жыл бұрын
it only becomes a high stick if it was hit above the shoulder as from one particular view it was super close but Toronto called it right on the shoulder height therefore not enough to overturn the goal as it was called good on the ice, hope this clears things up for everybody
@-Twenty-Nine-2 жыл бұрын
@@metalheadcol I'm not sure we know what Toronto called the initial contact as Smith's pad would've nullified the infraction. As I stated, it's a good goal. On that play, even if the puck contact was 4' above the Avs player's head the goal would be good in my opinion. Just wondering why a pad touch nullifies in one case but not another. And yes I understand that a delayed penalty requires the offending team to actually gain control. Try thinking as a newcomer to the game which are the one's Bettman is most concerned about. Hockey seems to have the most confusing rules to newcomers than any of the other 3 major sports
@lancesimmons18762 жыл бұрын
The pad doesn't need to nullify in this situation. The rule for a High Stick that doesn't go directly into the net is "above normal shoulder height", which means, if Lehkonen was standing upright, where would his shoulders be is the actual height in question. That stick touches pretty close to the crossbar height as lehkonen is extending himself and thus pulling his shoulders well below his normal shoulder height. Another good reference point is the top of the boards behind the net, they are no higher than 48 inches, and that is about as high as the stick. So unless this is a player smaller than Theo Fleury, we have all the points to understand that this wouldn't qualify as a high stick in the first place. I do agree that "if" this had been played with a High Stick, I don't know if it would have counted or been called back... what I learned in these playoffs is there is a lot more Nuance to the rules than we know. Since we generally only see certain plays once or twice a year (or maybe sometimes decade) we can't know every facet of the rule book unless we study as much as the refs. (not saying that the refs aren't frustrating in their penalty calling, but I have gained some more respect for their understanding of some of these complex nuances) I do believe that if this situation saw that it was indeed above the normal height, that it would have been called back, since the rule dictates (even in this situation) that the other team needs to gain possession to nullify the high stick, and not just have it deflect off of them.
