To call Steve Earle Anti-American proves you know nothing about him. He sings of injustive and hate and how he wishes things were the way they should be, you just have to listen. Which is what I advise you to do with his music. He speaks the truth.

Steve Earle was wayyyyyy ahead of his time and this song is just one of many examples. First song of his that I ever heard as a metalhead back in the day. Still a metalhead and still a SE fan to this day. I think Waylon and Willie would both approve. Willie has.

I forget the song name, but I thought I saw Waylon in one of Steve's videos. It will be Steve Earle & The Dukes. In this particular video, they throw their guitars into a fire. A guy with a cowboy hat on reminds me of Waylon, whether it's actually him or not I don't know.

Saw a young fella standing by a traffic light on a bitter cold winter day. He was holding a cardboard sign. I parked my car and walked back to him, shook his hand and gave him a few bucks, talked a minute and walked away feeling really really down. He was about the age of my son. Some people have really shit lives, nobody is there because they feel great and want to live like that, absolutely nobody. My son is 18, occasionally when he is with me I give him a few bucks and send him over to give it to someone, then we talk about it. So sad.

As a musician and singer/songwriter I don't understand why we can't do it like Steve did back then. Why do you have to be a pretty boy singing someone else's songs or be in a band playing a bunch of covers to make any money? Why can't a guy with solid songs and a solid band catch a break and make some damn money?
@nilradem8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Scott They can... Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton have been getting a lot of press. The question now and in the 80s is how that trickles down to other artists.

Amazingly enough, Steve Earle did end up homeless for periods of his life between 1992-94 when he was basically a non-functioning drug addict for the most part- mainly abusing crack once he ran out of money to afford regular heroin purchases and having to go to the slums and crack dens of Nashville to do so. He at least had a few cheques come in once in a while from his career while having family to crash with. Not many others on the streets can say that. He always has been able to side with the underdog and maybe he had a premonition he could easily become like one of them if his addictions got worse. And of course they did.

Well sometimes in the evenings I start to get that feeling Like I'm empty inside I know I'm doin' good now but tonight I'm headed downtown Down by the riverside I sit underneath the freeway with an old friend from the old days And a bottle of wine Well he used to call me "Big Time", and he knew someday that I'd shine Said he'd seen all the signs He said . . "Keep yourself to yourself Keep your bedroll dry And boy you never can tell What the shadows hide Keep ene eve on the ground Pick up whatever you find 'Cause you've got no place to fall When your back's to the wall" He's gettin' old and it's showin' when I asked him how it's goin' He said "I've seen better I guess I've been rained on, I've been frozen, but this here's the life I've chosen If it just wasn't for the loneliness" Now this river suits me to a T. but if you're trying to raise a family It ain't no place to be There's a kid down by the dump there, ought to be in grade school somewhere Now he hangs out with me And I told him . . ." Well we finished off the bottle and I told him,"Joe I think I ought to Be headed uptown" Well it was late, and I'd been drinkin', drivin' home I got to thinkin' 'Bout what's been going down Cause they're nervous down on Wall Street, but they're trying to keep it upbeat Or maybe they just don't care But down at the river eyes are burnin' cause they feel the tables turnin' So if you wind up down there...
