You got through what you got through, not just to finish out your days just being thankful. No. You got through it so you could be a beacon of hope for someone else behind you. You got through it to inspire others. To lead even one more out of the darkness. I'm sorry for all you went through, but it did have a purpose. Love this SE track. I first heard him play it on his 'The Hard Way' tour. The music was incredible, but I was worried that we were losing Steve - he looked so sick. Saw him again on the El Corazon tour (amazing set) and a third time when he toured "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive". Every album continues to shred genre distinctions and they convey honesty and optimism. Keep on rockin'!

I think this is a fucking great song and this album is one of my favorites. I saw him on this tour in Manchester in either 89 or 90 and I remember it to be a great gig. The album didn't do very well either in sales or critically but it was the country rock album I was looking for, a lot more rocky and edgy than his previous three albums. I met Steve a few years back when he was touring with Shawn Colvin and had him sign some of my albums. He was showing Shawn the album and saying that was a pic of him and his Grandad on the cover. I told him I thought it was a very underrated and maligned album and that was bollocks - it's a great record and he agreed - just listen to Billy Austin, Justice in Ontario, Regular Guy and others on it. I think this tour also spawned 'shut up and die like an aviator' which again is very underrated - just listen to tracks 12 thru 17 (Fearless heart to Dead Flowers) and tell me that ain't the best country rock ever.

I loved Steve for his music for years, too, but now I also love him as a person. In 2014 we got two big snowstorms in Jan. and Feb. Of all the hard luck, during the one in late Jan. John Hiatt was scheduled to play at the Birchmere, and we already had tickets. We had about 15" of snow, and that much is not typical so the plows were working overtime, and it was still snowing at nightfall. We couldn't even get up our hill. John Hiatt still played to a half-empty house because he *was* able to make it, so we were out the cost of tickets, (and JH's shows are $o expensive, well over $100 per seat!) In Feb, we had tickets for Steve Earle on the 13th and Rosanne Cash on the 14th. The next blizzard came on the 13th, it snowed all night and we got about 18" in total, but Steve had the consideration to cancel his show and reschedule it for Mar 13. That time, no snow. When we chatted with him after the concert, I said to him how grateful we were for him rescheduling the Feb show. And he was so sweet, he said he couldn't leave all those folks in the lurch.

I agree - I think a lot of people hear it as defiant, but I think there is a recognition he was heading for the bottom. He sounds tired of touring,, and the self-confidence rings hollow to me. I don't know if I would think that if I didn't know his history, but knowing that, it is sad.
@fancifulfilly11 жыл бұрын
Now I'm thinking it might have been the song "Love you Too Much" on (I think!) the Exit 0 album. The way he sings that particular song is very reminiscent of early Elvis vocals. Dwight Yoakam also; he came out around the same time as Steve, and he has a few songs that he sings in a vocal style that sounded amazingly like Elvis. And I would not even count his cover of "Suspicious Minds" in that group.
@darlincommitme13 жыл бұрын
@fancifulfilly I have always thought "didn't need no gasoline" referred to Steve hitchhiking around in his teens and 20s, not horses. He grew up in the suburbs, really, not rural Texas, though his grandfather had a farm. I agree with you that horses and the rodeo are used to emphasize nonconformity. Generally, I think this song is about being bound to fame and record contracts, and his bike reminding him of the days he felt more free.

I don't get all the people lamenting Steve's popularity. Lots of people like him, and he makes a comfortable living. In his Nashville heyday he wasn't that big, and he's always sold way less than the pop-country sludge pumped out by Shania, Garth, Rascal Flats and all those other miserable cheese acts. To be really poplular, he would have to change; he wouldn't BE Steve Earle. People who like Taylor Swift will continue to breed, and Steve's music will still be out there, so who gives a shit?
