I am the oboist in the far left of the screen. I remember this session was recorded for a TV broadcast. I also had the honor of performing with Steve Gadd at our alma mater The Eastman School of Music. I vividly remember a concert we had with Aram Katchaturian conducting his own music and he gave Steve a solo bow for his tympani performance on the famous Saber Dance part of the Gayane ballet.

Wow! Fabulous! More proof that Steve is and was from an early age: a world-class musician. Did you all know back then that he was someone special?

Matthew Bade, Katchaturian certainly did. What I remember about Steve was his constantly practicing his rudiments on whatever nearby surface that he could find around him. His drum sticks were constantly in motion both on and off the stage.

@@drewgreis6792 Great lore! In his own words, his still does that now, which is how his Gaddiments book came to be. Speaking of which, the exercises therein are opening my hands wide. Thank you, Steve!

@@drewgreis6792 Hey Drew, it's Dave Hughes, from the USAFB Concert Band 'detachment', 1969-1972. Just wanted to tell you how much I admired the utter skill of the Studio Band, which was just emerging as one of the great modern bands when we were there in the 1970's! Didn't you drive a Fiat 850? I seem to remember road testing one in the middle of the night somewhere around Fort Meade. LOL. Great times and great music!! PS Is that Eric Traub in the video? Sadly, he just passed. What a talent!

This is NOT the US Army Band, but the Studio Band of the US Army Field Band. I see my friends Terry Cook, Reg Jackson, and Eric Traub. (I was in the concert band of the US Army Field Band in 1970, and these guys were my fellow enlistees and barracks roommates!) Also, as I remember, this arrangement was by Ray Brown, who was the staff arranger for the Studio Band (One time I and several other new recruits delivered a piano to Ray's apartment in Laurel so he could work at home.) Keep in mind that programming this piece was WAY ahead of its time in 1970, when most of the military jazz groups were still doing Glenn Miller.

Wow! Thanks for the clarification. The video and title was lifted from a Steve Gadd DVD, I’m just the messenger. Do you see the comment from Drew Greis? He is the oboist in this clip. Wondering if you knew him?

@@mattbade2001 Yes Drew came in a few months after me. We both drove red Fiat sports cars (often late at night around Ft. Meade) so had alot in common. Thanks for digging out this clip. Steve Gadd is incredible, isn't he. We all were proud to play (or even be in the same building) with Steve.

@@davidhughes296 Haha, that’s great history and context. Wonderful! Yes, even though Steve’s translation of this Meters classic is nothing like the original, it’s still 100% Gadd, even at that young age, and just as cool. I bet it was indeed radical at the time. So you had a sense back then you were hearing something special? There are legions of great drummers but very few actually change the language of drumming and lead the way for following generations. To this day he continues to inspire; I’m working through his Gaddiments book currently and it has opened my hands in unexpected ways.

Unbelievable clean, crisp, precision drumming chops by Mr. Gadd. Playing intentionally slightly behind the beat on his solo made this even more funky. They look like 1960's Rogers drums here, which are one of my favorites (for Buddy and Louie Bellson also). Steve Gadd was already a phenomenal player at this point, and would only show the world in years to come, even more of his mastery of groove and feel. What tremendous technique and touch. Woweeee!!!!

to my ears, the only guy in that Army band is mr. Steve Gadd, oh boy how he drove that band and locked it together with his awesome beat(s) sorry you guys who performed with him in that TV broadcast and have been writing memos from that gig

Sometimes the drum part IS the song and not just a foundation for it. Gadd's command of time is so tangible, his groove so accessible (like a sonic platonic solid) that one simply must be in deference to it. And yet he leaves room for everyone, invites you in, and is always listening.
