@UCnHmbrV1PzX3KUzJRz4qnFQ It's a wonderful piece, and I don't feel the slightest inclination to change your mind. In terms of musical complexity, however, comparing it to a piece by J.S. Bach, Händel, Haydn, Telemann, etc, seems a bit hyperbolic. Cheers.

It evokes a watercourse - essential part of landscape to realise musically. North of the Border : bold, dramatic, fast moving; there's ''flitches of fern', and it takes me -topsy-turvy -ly -into the action..placid then up and down..survived a waterfall ! Little appreciated, the flute interweaving too near the end. Classical Guitar and Peter Gabriel's Flute never to quite meet in a song. I would have happily stylophoned my way through this.

Hi Steve, this is a fantastic piece of music. Essentially a duet piano guitar. Also the flute melody at the end is just beyond, not from this planet. You have achieved great virtue in music. Thank you for all the music you made with Genesis and solo. Without you the modern music history would be poor.

One of the songs that always gives me goose bumps. THIS album was the first I bought from Genesis. Actually, I didn't buy it for me, but as a gift for my best friend's birthday, when I was just a teenager (we were raised almost like brothers). He never knew about it, for his mother sent it back to me (my mother and her had "a cat fight" ... I think this is the right expression in english), and I was in a Beatles trip, nowing nothing about Genesis. Before I decided to bring the vinyl back to the shop, hoping to get my money back, I started listening to it, wondering what my "brother" could love in this music... And then, it was from Genesis to MY revelation. This IS the day when I felt in love with the band... After The Ordeal means a lot, for me... And believe me, Firth of fifth can't cure my goose bumps (:lol:)

Love this song so much. Was able to woo a beautiful girl back in 1975 by learning this on piano as it was her favourite Genesis track. I was surprised to learn Mike Rutherford penned that glorious Elgarian melody at the end which you play with such tasteful simplicity. It’s a shame this track tends to be overlooked when this stellar album is reviewed-to me it, and More Fool Me, help give this album such variety and shape.

Hi Steve, I want to thank you for this explaination. I think the entire album is a masterpiece but if I have to describe this song in particular with one word, it might be "anthem". Because it truly is. The combination of your acoustic guitar with the weight of Tony's piano keys are just wonderfull, but not enough. So you took your electric guitar and did what you always do: Magic. I Remember when I was a teenager and listened to this album, was mindblowing. But this track... I don't know, it just got me. And over and over the years I keep listening it. Congratulation for your career and I hope i'll see you playing with Genetics here in Argentina. Greetings¡¡¡¡

This piece gave a much needed break after Battle Of Epping Forest which was very lyric laden. It has a very sweet set of melodies running thru it and a touch of melancholy in the 2nd half that works very well. I can't understand why Tony Banks continually disses this track because he plays great on it and it's such a well written instrumental. A great track.
@arthurmee
@arthurmee 4 жыл бұрын
An interesting question you raise about Tony Banks being negative about it and yet coming up with a piano part so well written. Tony does speak his mind as we all know, but I suppose that it doesnt follow that he won't give his all even if he is less than thrilled by a piece. Committed to the band . . .

This was a very emotional song for me. The first part gives me this image of walking through old narrow city streets in Italy or an enhanced soap opera background music. The second part just has the air of relief and a happy ending, I enjoyed the last notes before the fade, abrupt but reassuring. One of my favorites.

Did you ever have a co-worker that you like outside of work hours, but could be annoying in the office because he is either such a perfectionist that gets on your your nerves, or the reverse? Steve and Tony were great together, Tony even said in an interview that Steve was some sort of ally in weird musical parts they were trying. But Tony, from what I can see, was a very dominating and obstinate musician and it must have been hard to work with him sometimes, especially after his counterpart balancing act Gabriel was gone.

@@Paddyjack I was thinking about this comment too: " Tony even said in an interview that Steve was some sort of ally in weird musical parts they were trying." I've had the opposite experince with band members. I've been in a couple of bands where musically I got on with a member whilst playing the music. The music united us but I was never keen to spend much time with him outside rehearsals and performing. But yes, your co-worker comment does come into play in my experience.

Well there is quite a back catalogue, his own solo and the wonderful collaboration with Djabe - Tomas Barabas on bass is superb (as are the other musicians). To hear The Steppes reinterpreted as almost Arabic is mind blowing. And of course it is highly likely Sir Hackett might write some more material. But we all hear the sentiment of what you are saying.
