As I understand for what Steve Hackett declared, 1st part of the song (nylon guitar-and-piano driven) was written by Hackett himself, but 2nd part (the electric guitar one) was written by Mike Rutherford. So, credits for Mike too, on this one.

I have a very personal interpretation of this song, don't know if it matches the original interpretation at all. Starts with a typical life of quiet desperation, then at 2:12 that life's end, dying, then from 3:18 on deliverence. So life is the ordeal. Too cynical? 😆

The importance of this song to Selling England's structure as a rock music album cannot be understated. Provides mental respite after being overwhelmed by Epping Forest and clears the brain for the 12 string intro to Cinema Show. Like a Greek chorus segueing between main acts. Whoever decided on sequencing it between the two deserved a raise. Cheers to Mike Rutherford for showing some muscle on insisting that Tony and Peter agree to keep it. If Mike said it was OK, it was OK. He's like six foot four with that doubleneck guitar.

I love the compressed distortion of Steve in his solo. You know he's playing that by hearing the fisrt note. I beleive that the first part is a Hackett creation, while the second (when Steve starts his solo) is a Rutherford one (always so romantic).

I love this album and After The Ordeal may not be as big as the other tracks, but it’s fantastic. I’m glad it was given a place on the album because I can’t imagine Selling England By The Pound without it. Having tracks rereleased weekly like this reminds me of one thing I’ve always loved about Genesis albums, how great they are just to listen to from first track to last. They’ve held up great as individual pieces, but they’re magical when played altogether.

Selling England by the pound wouldn't have been the same without this track. I think it carried the mood of the record even further + I am a huge Steve Hackett fan there is a version of him and Roger. Keyboard virtuoso king doing this and it's majikal. Another example of Steve's vast knowledge of melody. Not sure why Tony didn't like this his playing is awesome on it.

To this day I'm still baffled as to why Tony Banks feels this is one of the worst songs Genesis ever recorded. Maybe because this was one of the first songs Steve wrote for the band?
@wolves76553 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons is that he found his own playing on After The Ordeal to be poor. In the remastered version, the guitar is much more prominent than the keyboards. It is simply his opinion which was also shared by Peter Gabriel (although not as forcefully). Thankfully, the majority of the band disagreed and it is sequenced well on Selling England, nicely sandwiched between more epic tunes.

Apparently so, such a tragedy. But that's what happens when brilliances clash. Tony was just off the charts brilliant, and (from what I understand) Steve wanted more involvement in decision making. This track epitomises Genesis for me - if someone asked me about them, I'd say go listen to this, it is Genesis in all their glory. The only thing (as was the case with Many Too Many, and others) it was too short!!! Funny, really, that so many of their tracks went on a tad too long (under Peter) and then too short when he left! Cheers, John.
